LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I turned the big 4-oh a few weeks ago and the amount of times I’ve been called old since then is rather alarming. I don’t look old. I certainly don’t feel old… But I have to admit, that sometimes I

question my brain’s youth. I am forgetful… very forgetful. Truth be told, if my head wasn’t screwed on my body, I would definitely leave that everywhere I go.

Back to my turning 40. I was lucky enough to receive a lot of gift vouchers from Takealot and because I am an eco-warrior and pride myself in living a “green” life, I immediately bought Trolley Bags online so that I don’t have to use plastic bags anymore! These are an incredible discovery. There four large canvas bags in different colours in a pack and fit snuggly onto your trolley so that you can put your groceries directly into the bags, pay for them and then put them back into the bags to take home – therefore avoiding having to buy plastic bags or reusable bags at the check out counter. Such an excellent buy all round! Great for the environment, easy to organise and unpack my groceries when I’m home.

Except I forget to put them back in my car boot when I’m finished with them.

So maybe there is something about turning 40 and getting “older”. I think growing older allows us the “headspace” to admit our shortcomings and to be ok with them, as well as to focus our time and energy on things that we are good at and make us truly happy.

I have therefore decided that from now on I am going to do my grocery shopping online! This way I won’t beat myself up about forgetting yet another thing on my list (ie. Reusable shopping bags) and no longer feeling guilty for perpetuating the use of plastic bags in the shops – Woolies delivers groceries in cardboard boxes… You are welcome!

Best,

Debbie

What to avoid when selling your homeHere are a few common mistakes that sellers have made in the past, to help you avoid them in the future.

Trying to go it aloneWorking with a trustworthy real estate professional will ensure that the home is sold for the best possible price within the

shortest possible time. Working with the wrong real estate agent

Select an agent who has working experience in the area in which the property is situated. The agent must have a depth of knowledge on the property market, specifically the micro-market in your neighbourhood.

Inflating the property priceMany sellers overprice their home in an attempt to counteract buyers trying to negotiate the price down. Research shows

that the longer a home sits on the market, the bigger than the gap between the listing and the actual selling price. Getting overly emotional

An outside party such as a trusted family member or estate agent can be a valuable asset when seeing the home objectively.

ESTATE NEWS

NEWS FROM THE CEO

We would like to share the following important points with our residents. There are a number

of really important matters and you are requested to ensure that your whole family is fully aware of this information.

TUMS PRE-PAID ELECTRICAL METERSWe have a group of members that are making use of TUMS pre-paid meters. We sent a special communiqué on 3 May 2019 explaining that the City of Tshwane has informed us that technicians will be replacing the TUMS smart meters with City of Tshwane prepaid meters. The replacement follows the favourable ruling of the North Gauteng High Court, dated 23 October 2018. The notification letter as well as frequently asked questions were shared in the communiqué noted.

The City of Tshwane confirmed that the process is going according to plan with the replacement of almost 8,600 meters. There are some challenges with the contractor facilitating the process and design problems with infrastructure in most gated communities. The challenges with the contractor at Silver Lakes was addressed with the City of Tshwane. Our members will from 1 July 2019 no longer be able to purchase any pre-paid electricity from TUMS. If you need more information than what was shared in the communiqué of 3 May 2019, you may contact Mr Mynhard Ferreira from the City of Tshwane at 060 997 3375 or send an email to [email protected]

PROJECTS The two “old” tennis courts are being upgraded with the fencing and the surface being addressed. This should soon enable

us to host the tennis championship for Silver Lakes on three tennis courts that will be in immaculate condition.

The Chapel at the Clubhouse is being upgraded and will include a new wooden deck. This should be completed on time for the Youth Day celebration and our members will now have an even better facility for private functions. Please remember to contact Bobby Westman at the Clubhouse to book the Chapel for any private function.

The upgrade of both guardhouses was completed while work is in progress with the replacement of the booms, installation of spikes and the new Morpho Wave access control system. The system will be fully installed by the end of May.

ACCESS CONTROL RE-ENROLLMENTTo facilitate the upgrade process, it is required that each resident re-enrolls on the new system database by clicking on the link that you will receive via SMS and e-mail. You will also receive a personalised password that will enable you to open the link. Please ensure that you have all the personal information of each member of your household available before you open the link. If you operate a business from your home, you would also be required to have all the staff’s personal details at hand when you register.

Once you have opened the link, please follow the prompts. When you are done click on submit. The information you have submitted will be stored automatically onto the new access control database. Once you have re-enrolled online, you will be required to have your fingerprints

rescanned and your photo taken. The re-enrollment will be done from your home while you will only be required to have your fingerprints rescanned and photo taken at the temporary enrolment station.

The temporary enrolment station will be established at the Clubhouse for this purpose, and will be operational as follows:• 3 June – 7 June from 6h00 until 20h00

(Monday – Friday)• 8 June – 9 June from 8h00 until 17h00

(Saturday & Sunday)• 10 June – 14 June from 6h00 until 20h00

(Monday – Friday)• 15 June – 16 June from 8h00 until 17h00

(Saturday & Sunday)• 17 June from 8h00 – 17h00 (Monday

during Youth Day celebration)

Please make sure that you take along your identity document / identity card / passport. Tenants must also bring along their lease agreements to enable the HOA to identify the expiry date of the lease agreement and process access accordingly for the period only.

The enrolment will continue at the HOA Management Centre from 18 June during normal working hours. Provision will be made at the Clubhouse for enrolment over weekends from 22 June and the detail shared with our residents.

Residents who have not re-enrolled will still be able to make use of the slower, biometric system currently in use. Those who have re-enrolled and had their fingerprints redone along with their photograph, will be able to use the must faster Morpho Wave access system. The

Page 11: INTRAMUROS - Silver Lakes Golf Estate · Nienke Moolman Ilse Ruane Elize Malan Hilary Green Madeleine De Wet Brendon van Nieuwenhuizen Audrey Bekker Adva Beeri-Eldar SILVER LAKES

old system will still be used until 31 July 2019, when it will be terminated, removed at the gates with only the new Morpho Wave access system being used.

We thank our residents for their patience during the construction period and look forward to having a far more secure and user-friendly system being introduced.

SPEEDING ON THE ESTATE AND OTHER CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATIONSOur members have previously been advised that the Supreme Court of Appeal ruled in favour of Mount Edgecombe during the judgement in MECCEMA 2 / NIEMESH SINGH & OTHERS – ROAD RULES MATTER. A special communiqué was circulated to our members with more information and it was also noted in the previous edition of the Intra Muros.

The judgement represents a victory for the right of homeowners associations to regulate the conduct of members through a system of rules and reaffirms that the relationship between a homeowners association and its members is founded in contract. That having been said, we must still ensure that their particular rules are lawful and satisfactorily regulate conduct including, but not limited to, conduct on our internal road networks.

The vision of the Board is “To maintain and enhance Silver Lakes as a world-class secure, safe, environmentally aware and good-neighbourly residential estate for the benefit of residents”. This is only possible if we have respect for our fellow residents, which includes the way we drive. We are not going to start jumping from behind a bush and issue penalties to residents for speeding or skipping stop signs, but it will be done on a random basis, depending on what we experience on the estate. A penalty has already been issued to a driver this month for overtaking another resident at a stop sign and not even considering to stop. We really require the co-operation of our members and thank the report-backs we have received with footage, which helps us in the process.

EXCISED PROPERTIESWhen the Association purchased the golf course in 2010, certain properties were excised and not included in the sale agreement. Notice of the excised sections was circulated to Members on 16 July 2015 and again on 19 January 2018.

We have had a number of queries about the excised properties. This has also been put on our website and we wish to share the listed properties and map, indicating the positioning of the properties.

PUMP STATION AT SIX FOUNTAIN ESTATEOur members will be aware of the frustration we have had with the sewerage spills from the municipal pump station located in Six Fountains Residential Estate. Following a recent meeting with three members of the Mayoral Committee and a whole delegation of City of Tshwane representatives, it was agreed to implement interim measures with special funding being made available to pro-actively address the reasons for the spills. The process is being monitored by Silver Lakes HOA to ensure that the City of Tshwane complies with their undertakings.

The EColi was treated and contractors appointed to do special bacterial treatment in our dams. Special water tests were done and will be redone to ensure that our water returns to an acceptable state. Members are in the meantime asked to be careful with what could be contaminated water during the treatment process.

COUNTRY CLUBWe are excited about what is happening at the Country Club. Our golfers are doing well in the league championships, our Bird Club was relaunched, the newly established Photography Club will have their second meeting in June, preparation is in full swing for Youth Day and we had our first Father and Son camping experience on the driving range. Good news is that this will be an annual event going forward. The squash championships will start in June and will take place over a period of two months to accommodate

the busy program of most residents. The Race of Faith will be held on 1 June and we thank our members for their patience on this morning with more than 2,000 runners and walkers expected to do the 5km, 10km or 15km race.

GENERAL MAINTENANCEIt is suggested that members use the next four months to do any catch-up with painting while the weather is ideal. It is quite noticeable that a number of members have started with painting and we thank them in advance for helping to uphold the standards on the estate.

We are experiencing some challenges with members who have trees along the electric fence of the estate. We have a contractor that does preventative maintenance on the trees by trimming it from the outside of the estate. Access into properties is sometimes difficult or not possible and our residents are requested to take pro-active action and do proper trimming of their trees to avoid false alarms.

Should you have any queries about any matter on the estate, please feel free to contact Maxine Martinho, our Member Ambassador at the HOA, who will assist you with your query or put you in touch with the correct person. Alternatively, you are welcome to join us at the ‘Meet the Management’ session at the Clubhouse – these dates will be shared with our members.

Kind regards

ESTATE NEWS

Good day to all members and homeowners

Voting day was a very busy day at the Clubhouse as we presented our triple-up-meat day competition so there

were many activities at the Clubhouse. It’s always great for us to see our residents visiting their facility.

As mentioned in last months’ magazine about the changing seasons, we can now see the colour change on the golf course. We request that residents using golf carts after golfing hours please avoid all compacted areas. We are also busy with, as mentioned, tree pruning and planting of new trees on holes 1 and 2.

We have completed the front 9 bunkers and the maintenance team is hard at work trying to finish the bunker project by the end of

July. The bunkers that are open for play are being enjoyed by our golfers as it is creating an overall new challenge for their skill and abilities.

We still see many residents/non-golfers crossing the golf course during playing hours and we would like to reiterate that this is extremely dangerous. When hitting a golf ball, not all golfers have control over their balls. This means that these balls can go in any direction. Please be careful near the course.

We hosted our first par 3 challenge, available for any golfer, and we would like to invite the residents to join in the fun, as this competition is not only open to golf members but to non-golfers as well.

Just a reminder of our golfing hours (6h15 to end of official play).

We are still experiencing problems with the removal of the yellow driving range golf balls. Please note that these balls are the property of the Silver Lakes Homeowners Association and may under no circumstance be taken off the premises. It is strictly prohibited to play a round of golf with driving range balls.

Happy golfing

FROM THE COUNTRY CLUB

EXCITING TENNIS TALENT IN SILVER LAKES GOLF ESTATE

by Coach Charles Mehlape

There is some really exciting, up-and-coming young tennis talent in Silver Lakes. Several juniors have

been making a mark on the National and International stages, participating in several tournaments. All these juniors have been following in the footsteps of Zoe and Isabella Kruger, two sisters with enormous tennis talent and who are well-known around the world and are previous residents of Silver Lakes. They are both now training at the IMG

Academy in Florida. Another senior is Christiaan Worst who is now studying at Vanderbilt University, in Tennessee, on a tennis scholarship. Christiaan has been one of the South African top juniors and has represented the country several times in different age groups. He is being coached by his uncle, a well-known doubles specialist Danie Visser who himself has collected different accolades in his playing career including grand slams.

ESTATE NEWS

It is easy to see why June is many people's favourite month. The early mornings are crisp and ideal for an early walk in

our beautiful Estate, to see your breath chuffing or to hit the snooze button and cuddle up under a blanket. You can also be forgiven for enjoying some comfort foods such as soups, slow roasts and warm desserts in front of the fireplace. It is an opportune time to think of those less fortunate than us and we would like to thank everyone who opened their hearts and contributed to making the winter days warmer and happier for many people as part of our Winter Donation drive.

The donations, clothing and blankets were handed over to The Lighthouse Elandspoort NPC in Pretoria. These people do an amazing job and really make a big difference in so many people’s lives.

Their goal is to uplift and change the community for the better in the long term. If you would like to get involved with the The Lighthouse Elandspoort NPC you can contact Belinda on 072 252 0742 or [email protected]

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERS

ESTATE NEWS

I would like apologise to all the homeowners for missing the deadline for articles in Intra Muros last month.

We were on holiday and I did not prepare well! I did not take new photos before we left as I usually do and when I started writing I realised I could not write from old photos – the deadline was before we were back on the Estate and therefore no environmental article. But this month I am catching up and will put everything in this one article!

A very sad, but super important note to start on is the MISSING IMPALA. We have experienced previous disappearances where a few years back the son of one of the residents shot some buck with a hunting bow – he was criminally prosecuted. So when a buck was reported missing I couldn’t believe it! Cameras were put up at

the feeding areas and we all scoured the area – and realised that the group of seven male impalas disappeared. One male is still left we believe. If ANYBODY has any information or suspicions regarding the disappearances – please contact Henk Booysen our CEO (Cell: 079 954 2743). If you want to stay anonymous, it is also okay – we will investigate any and every bit of information we receive.

Otherwise, on the Estate, things are in the winter season maintenance phase and we are cutting reeds where necessary, outside the breeding season of the birds and fish so that the activity does not disturb them.

It is really awesome walking on the golf course and in the game reserve; it’s about a 15km walk if one stays on the golf paths and the newly opened hiking trails of the

game reserve. Our Environmental Team did a fantastic job cutting open the hiking trails. Please go and enjoy them. You will enjoy our nearly 150 head of game which includes springbuck, impala, blesbuck, nyala, kudu, bushbuck, reedbuck, waterbuck, steenbuck, grey duiker, and our three sable antelope. ESTATE NEWS

We realised that some off the impalas were gone after the game count of March 2019 while exchanging game in April with another game reserve to mix bloodlines a bit! We hope these new animals help keep our bloodlines sorted so our animals remain healthy!

We please ask ALL vehicles (including bicycles) to stay off the trails and out of the main body (veld – including the fire breaks and feeding roads) of the game reserve to prevent frightening or even killing animals that are hiding in the grasslands and undergrowth. If you are going fast on your bicycle, would you have seen these little ones lying down?

On the golf course and in the game reserve you would have noticed some new babies – the guinea fowl have their little ones tagging along!

You would also have heard or sometimes seen a bit of Cape Town on the island of the 14th. The migrating seagulls that come to rest here! It is such a surprise to hear the noisy squawk one associates with seaside holidays here in the middle of our Estate – right on Mother’s Day, it felt like I was back in my hometown of Kommetjie in Cape Town! Just walking along the routes I mentioned above one will see so many different birds; it is a must to all bird lovers to join our Bird Club. Please keep your eyes open for the notices going out. Also, go and have a look at our new website where we posted images of most of the known bird and animal species in the Estate.

Talking of the seagulls at the dam on the 14th, we are still busy with treating the dams for E.coli from the spillages earlier this year. We are also implementing a

few (about 10) floating islands to add to the one surviving one from about four years ago; this will help with keeping the water environment healthy and clean for our indigenous water plants to grow and to overcome the infestation of the weed grasses that we are currently (the past nearly three years!) experience. We are also repeating the water tests we did a few months ago to test the water after the spillages to determine what the immediate effect of the water treating is.

Walking on the golf pathways you will see the teams busy with tree pruning and fixing the green-side bunkers. With all this winter work going on, we’re sure to see the results in summer! If you are a golfer and have been following Brendon’s newsletters, you would know about the remodelling of the bunkers. The drainage was shot

and after rain or even just irrigation, they were filled quickly. Some were extremely deep with near vertical sides, which made proper maintenance nearly impossible. The bunkers were opened up, emptied of the old sand and each set of drainage pipes were serviced and in some cases, completely replaced. Here you can see the new ‘shallower’, better-shaped bunkers with their new sand.

We are also busy with some other projects. As you will see we are at long last putting in the new doors and wooden deck at the Chapel at the Clubhouse. This will help link this beautiful venue with the new children’s play area and park. You can chat and sit and watch your children from the extra wide stairs, or as soon as we have budget, the new furniture we are planning for this area.

You will also have noticed we have re-planted one of the largest palm trees from the lawn at the Clubhouse in the place of the dead palm tree. You will remember that we had one of the two feature palm trees right in front of the entrance to the Clubhouse dying from nesting love birds. While replanting the ponytail palms from the flower bed where the new wooden deck will be, we also removed the old dead palm tree and planted this one here. It seems to be doing okay!

You will also see that once again the beautiful roses are still flowering in winter

and, as you will see in the photos below, they provide a beautiful backdrop to our staff in the black and red uniforms!

A big thanks must go to everyone in the Estate who beautify their sidewalks! I believe all your neighbours, really appreciate it a lot! It is definitely one of the many ways to beautify the streetscapes of our Estate.

Thanks to all the homeowners who have supported me and our environmental teams in our quest to help make this Estate a family-friendly, warm and welcoming Estate. Have fun this winter and enjoy preparing for your spring gardens!

Even if you are not a serious gardener and not interested in the green world outside your window, you should

know about the miniscule beetle that is destroying trees on city pavements, parks and estates. The insect was probably introduced to South Africa via products from South East Asia. The small, insignificant brown beetle Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer (PSHB), is only the size of a matchstick head (2mm) but can indirectly cause the death of a 20m sized Ficus tree.

Once an area is infested, 30% of trees in that area can die within seven years. Not only exotic trees, but to a large extent indigenous trees are targeted by the beetle, too. As the name suggests it is a borer, but the female beetle is also the carrier of several fungus species. The insect will bore through the bark into the sapwood of the host tree. As the beetle tunnels, a fungus (Fusarium euwallaceae) is deposited and infects the tree. The beetle will lay eggs, larvae will develop and mature. A new generation of beetles will create more tunnels to weaken the tree, or leave and infect another tree. The fungus causes general deterioration, die-back of branches and if infection is severe, death of the host tree.

Unfortunately, the beetles can remain alive in the dead tree for an extended period of time until another host is found. Reproductive host trees are trees where the complete lifecycle of the beetle (and fungus) is harboured. Non-reproductive host trees will be penetrated and inoculated with the fungus, but the beetle will die or leave the tree without laying eggs.

A few of the host trees on which infestations have been confirmed are: Combretum erythrophyllum (River bushwillow) Buddleya saligna (False olive) Ekebergia capensis (Cape Ash) Harpephyllum caffrum (wild plum) Olea europea subsp africana (Wild Olive) Bauhinia galpinii (Pride of De Kaap) Pecan nut, Lemon, Peach and Avocado trees in home gardens.

I am sure that you will recognise the names, as some species are planted as street trees on the Estate and others are growing in your own garden.

So why will some trees be attacked, while others of the same species are unaffected? Not every tree will provide an ideal ecosystem for the beetle to thrive and breed.

Stress caused by different reasons, will result in a tree becoming a reproductive host. This could be drought, overwatering, damage to the root zone, excessive incorrect pruning, as well as ring-barking a tree at soil level with a brush cutter.

Do we have beetle-infected trees on the Estate? It would be naïve to think that all the trees on the Estate are healthy. Infestation signs only become visible at an advanced stage of deterioration and at the moment South Africa has no registered products available to combat the pest.

Forget about rules and limitations, things that are "permissible" and "forbidden" to eat and start connecting to yourself: know the principles of intuitive nutrition – that will sort out your head and plate!

In short, intuitive eating means exiting the cycle of the periodic diets – for a learning process of conscious and guilt-

free eating. There is no calorie count or restrictions on certain types of food, but there are a few guidelines – 10 principles, more precisely, that comprise the philosophy of the method.

1. Rejection of diet mentalityLet go of diet books and articles in magazines that offer you false hope of losing weight quickly, easily, and permanently. It is also allowed to be angry at the alleged truths that led you to feel as if you were a failure whenever a new diet stopped working and you gained all the weight back. If you leave even a spark of hope that a new and better diet is waiting around the corner, it will prevent you from being free to rediscover the intuitive eating. 2. Respect your hungerTake care of your body and provide it with adequate energy and carbohydrates. Otherwise, you may eat too much because of Primal Drive. Once you reach an excessive hunger, all of the moderate and conscious eating intention becomes irrelevant. Learning to respect the first biological signal of hunger begins in the construction process of your trust against food. 3. Make peace with foodDeclare truce: Stop the fight against food. Give yourself an unconditional pass to eat. If you tell yourself that you can't or do not need to eat a particular food, it can lead to feelings of intense deprivation that produces uncontrollable cravings, and often, you will then tear into the food

when you finally allow yourself the food that you forbade yourself. Eating after the release of a ban ultimately will result in overeating and devastating guilt. 4. Challenge the "Food Police"Shout "no" to thoughts in your head that tell you that you are "good" because you have eaten few calories or "bad" because you ate chocolate cake. The "Food Police" monitors the unreasonable rules that the diet has created. The police station is deep in your soul, and her speaker screams hopeless, negative sentences, and guilt-provoking accusations. Thus, erasing the food police is a crucial step to return to intuitive eating. 5. Respect your feeling of satietyListen to the body signals that tells you that you are no longer hungry. Pause your meal and ask yourself how does the food taste and what is your current level of satiety? 6. Discover the factor of pleasure and satisfactionOn our journey to being thin and healthy, we often ignore one of the most basic gifts of existence – the enjoyment and satisfaction that can be found in an eating experience. When you eat what you really want, in an inviting and supportive environment, the enjoyment you derive will be a powerful force that will help you feel happy and satisfied. If you allow yourself to have such an experience, you will find that it takes a lot less food to decide that you have eaten "enough." 7. Respect your emotions without using foodFind ways to comfort, nurture, distract and solve your problems without using food. Anxiety, loneliness, boredom, and anger are feelings that we all experience throughout life. Food cannot pacify all

those feelings. It may comfort in the short term, distract from the pain, but the food will not solve the problem. Eating from emotional hunger will only make you feel worse in the long run. Ultimately you will have to cope with the source of emotion as well as with the discomfort of overeating.

8. Respect your bodyAccept your genetics. Just as a person with a shoe size of 42 would not expect to be pushed to a size 38, there is no use (or comfort) in the same expectation about the size of the body. If you respect your body, you will feel better about who you are. It will be difficult for you to reject a diet mentality if you are unrealistically critical of your body shape. 9. Exercise and feel the differenceForget militant fitness exercises. Just be more active and feel the difference. Focus your attention on the activity itself, rather than the calorie burn. If you focus on the feeling that your activity produces – like more energy, endorphins, etc. you'll want to be more active and enjoy the activity. If you wake up with the sole goal to lose weight, it won’t usually be a good enough factor to get you out of bed and start the exercising. 10. Respect your healthIntuitive eating means making food choices that respect your health and preferences and make you feel good. Remember that you do not need to eat a perfect diet to be healthy. You will not suddenly reach a nutrient deficiency or suddenly gain weight from one snack, one meal, or one day of eating. What you eat consistently and for a long time is important. what matters is progress and not perfection.

Silver LakesTODAY’S CH LD

THE DAY I DIDN’T BUY A CAR

In Hil’s Head I'm a mom to two amazing kids – a 13-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son. I've been married to my best friend for 17 years and we all live in a big, old house in the 'burbs with our two cats and two dogs. I work full-time in the insurance industry and when I'm not working, wife'ing or mothering, I'm studying towards a degree in marketing. And in the very few spare moments I have left, I blog, take horse riding lessons, run (slowly) and sleep! Please come hang out with me at www.inhilshead.co.za I'd love to have you visit!

I normally tell you guys stories about how my kids are growing up. Today I am going to tell you a little story about me,

my intuition and not buying a new car.

I spend at least 90 minutes a day in stop-start traffic. In the interests of saving my left leg, I decided it was time to buy an automatic.

After doing some research, I clicked on a promo ad that popped up in one of my social media feeds. Google watches everything! About three seconds later, a very eager sales woman called me. Although the dealership was a distance away, she was friendly, and the deal seemed good. All our dealings were via phone, email and WhatsApp which suited me, because it was a busy work week.

After to’ing and fro’ing around finance options and trade-in values, I agreed to go ahead with the sale. Once I said yes, I was amazed by how quickly they had the car ready. I was told I could collect it the next day. I went in a manic rush to arrange insurance, and cancel the insurance on the car I was trading in. A little voice was nagging while I was on the call to my

insurer. Something told me not to cancel the insurance on my old car immediately.

I’ve bought a few cars, and for some reason I wasn’t as excited as I should have been when I arrived at the dealership and met the eager sales woman for the first time.

She handed me the file of paperwork to sign, and I silently apologised to Mother Nature for the number of trees that went into making that tome. While I was signing, super eager sales lady brought her boss over. Something was up.

Apparently, the boss man wasn’t happy with the state of the car I was trading in, and decided that then, just as I was signing the contracts, was the time to renegotiate the deal. I wasn’t having it. The little voice grew louder. I was not feeling great about the deal.

“Shut up gut… we’ve come this far. Just do the deal.”

I stood my ground and he relented. I finished signing and the eager sales lady handed me the keys. We took the obligatory photo of me next to the car with

the bow and I drove out of the showroom. I drove around the corner from the dealership and stopped for breakfast. That was when I discovered that the passenger door wouldn’t open. I immediately took the car back to the dealership and they fiddled. Something was up with the central locking. They needed to undo the door panel to repair it, and that’s when I decided to listen to my noisy inner voice. There was no way that a car with barely 100 kms on the clock should have a problem already!

I asked to see the manager. Yes, I was that woman. I told him that the deal was off. After a whole load of insisting, boss man agreed, and I drove home in my old car. I was going to be changing gears for a few more days.

I don’t know whether I made the right decision, but I do know that something felt off. At first, I tried to ignore my intuition because I didn’t want to be a troublesome customer, but the minute I found the courage to cancel the deal, I felt better.

Learning to listen to ourselves is hard. Maybe it’s something that comes with getting older and wiser, but it’s worth cultivating. Now, back to the car shopping!

TODAY'S CHILD

The current divorce rate in South Africa ranges between 42%-50%. The main causes of divorce include financial

difficulties, infidelity and breakdown in communication. Divorce often presents with additional challenges such as abusive behaviour, financial manipulation, non-payment of maintenance, dishonouring of promises with regard to contact with children, a controlling ex, using the children as pawns, legal issues, protection orders and the presence of a third party. Divorce is comparable in a lot of ways to bereavement, because there are so many losses:• loss of life as I know it• loss of a marriage• loss of a dream• loss of a complete family unit• loss of identity Divorce is loss. The more obvious losses included the loss of spending time with your children every day and the loss of status as being a married person. But the losses go further too. Assets get divided, friends choose sides. Loss of hope for the future and loss of control are also experienced. It is a time of tremendous fear.

• How will I manage on my own?• Will I be alone forever?• Will this affect my children?• What will people say about me?• Will people judge me?• Will my children prefer the other parent

and potentially reject me?

Divorce makes everyone feel different, marginalised, stigmatised, shamed or isolated. Make no mistake divorce is horrid.

The impact on the children is sometimes forgotten by the divorcing parents as they speed away to their ‘new’ life. For the children a changed family unit could mean a lot of things. It may mean the introduction of new partners, a remarriage and presence of a step parent, or a blended family (step and half-siblings). These changes are not things that can be entered into lightly. Proper preparation and care needs to be exercised by all parties concerned before changes are implemented as children need stability to function.

Children subsequently experience many difficulties:• Uncertainty• Changes in routine• Feeling a sense of unfairness• Dealing with a blended family• Feeling different to their peers• Having one parent bad mouth the other

parent• Having to continually adapt to two

different environments• Feeling like they have to choose

between parents (especially in an acrimonious divorce).

Telling children that their parents are getting divorced Telling children about the decision to divorce is most probably one of the most difficult conversations one will ever have. Of vital importance is to ensure them that they will be cared for and loved, no matter what. It is important to consider their developmental age and stage because a 5-year-old will need a different type of conversation to a 10 or even 15 year old. Underneath I discuss the key developmental concerns, how and what to communicate and red flag reactions.

Infants and toddlers 6 months to 3 years: Contrary to the thought process of “we divorced when she was still a baby, she doesn’t remember anything, it didn’t affect her” think about the following… Significant scientific evidence that substantiates that our past influences our present. Our pattern of attachment is profoundly affected by the kind of childcare we received from birth-3years because it is a particularly sensitive period for forming the foundation of assumptions which we bring to all relationships with other people throughout life. At this age, the key developmental issue is separation. Infants and toddlers under 3 years have less verbal ability but are highly perceptive. Being that their receptive ability is higher than their verbal ability, we need to use words and actions to demonstrate things to them. The red flag reactions for this age group include:• Crying, clinginess, weight loss• Separation anxiety• Change in sleeping patterns• Acting out behaviour• Regression

Preschool children 4-6 years: Pre-schoolers are known for their egocentric behaviour and wild imaginations. These two elements can make the pre-schooler more sensitive and have feelings of guilt surrounding the divorce as well as struggles to differentiate fantasy from reality. Therefore pre-schoolers develop frightening fantasies in terms of dreams and nightmares but also in terms of how their lives are going to turn out. The trick is dealing with pre-schoolers is keeping the communication open and maintaining routines and stability in the home. Red flags here include:• Frightening fantasies/dreams• Regression• Sleep disturbances• Clinginess and withdrawal• Changes in eating patterns

Early primary school children 6-8 years: Primary school children have started to develop abstract thinking which allows them the ability to communicate openly and discuss outcomes. Therefore important in this age group is the emphasis on being honest and predictable with regards to behaviour and verbal communication. They display an increased emotional independence, however, they need constant reassurance from their parents. Primary school children tend to have an increased attachment to their fathers which makes a divorce in this age group particularly tricky if the father is deemed the wrongdoer. Where possible both parents need to try to limit the disruption to the father-child relationship. Their increased verbal ability can result in some very interesting conversations. Keep conversations open, honest and practical in nature. Things to remember:• They find it difficult to understand that

divorce is a permanent change.• Need reassurance of their safety

because they struggle with separation.

Later primary school children 9 – 13 years: Older primary school children have a realistic understanding of divorce. Therefore use direct language with them and communicate with the emphasis on gaining their understanding of the situation. They are capable of more sophisticated relationships and are highly talented at masking their true feelings. They cleverly use language to avoid talking about issues. They are also able to become emotionally detached from the divorce situation in an attempt to not appear

vulnerable. However, this must not be confused with them being ‘ok’ with it. They are merely detaching from a potentially painful experience. They will however give indications elsewhere in their lives that they are struggling. School marks drop, they become involved with the wrong crowd, promiscuous behaviour and artful manipulation may become evident. Heated conversations about benign issues may become prevalent. Things to watch out for:• Anger that leads to acting out• Confusion • Fights at school• Withdrawal from family

High school adolescents 13-18 years: Some overlap exists between this age group and the previous one as the behavioural outcomes might start coming to the fore. This age group experiences increased independence and often require or insist on more information. This is a slippery slope when the adolescent wants all the details of the divorce. Try not to fall into the blame-game trap or providing information that they do not need to know. We need to remember this age group is still very much a child. They become challenging of time and often play parents off against each other from their own benefit. Despite their independence, they still need consistency and security. Consistency in terms of rules and security is that the rules may still not be broken just because mom and dad are divorcing. This age groups main goal is identity formation and therefore everything is “How is this going to affect my life?”. Therefore tell them what is going to change, how it is going to change. Red flags include: • Academic performance, restlessness/

day-dreaming, anxiety (increase in perfectionism or alternatively lack of motivation to try)

• Engaging with the same friends as before or has there been a change?, is the child withdrawn at break time?, incidents of bullying?, excessively aggressive/passive or passive-aggressive?

• and is the child more tired than usual?, what is his/her mood like? And does he/she have all her homework, is it completed, signed etc?

Guidelines to helping Parents in tackling this conversation 1. Timing: Parents should try to be

emotionally ready. Bitterness and heart-break may be present but we need to try not make this already difficult situation any worse of the children.

2. Parents to work together: Communicate as a ‘we’ rather than an ‘I’.

3. Making a Plan: Decide together on what

you are going to say and how you are going to proceed. Also, proceed with the plans and get the legal and practical situation sorted out quickly. This limits the damage done to the relationships between everyone.

4. Being honest and realistic: Do not pretend life will be the same. It is important to prepare children for changes. It is important that children have an idea of what is going to happen, even temporarily. Be constant with their routines and avoid any additional major changes at this time.

What happens next? Parents need to learn to work together and what is in the best interests of the child is of the foremost.

In order to minimise the effects on the children, wrap things up quickly in terms of big decisions, house moves, divorce settlements etc so that the relationship fallout between parents and children is contained in the shortest possible time frame and that healing can start as soon as possible.

Many families struggle more with parenting after the divorceDivorce means a change in the family structure, traditional roles and routine. Parents struggle to manage this re-formation of the family, and navigate the twists and turns that the two parent, two household life presents. Parents may be wrapped up in their own emotions that they fail to see how their behaviour effects their children. The possibility of ‘spilling over’ in front of their children is always present and parents need to consciously try to avoid this landmine. The parenting part of relationship endures after divorce but it changes to co-parenting. Both father and mother need to realise that continuity, familiarity and predictability are the foundation for secure and healthy emotional development for all children. Be aware of the dynamics of:• Forced secrecy – that child is ‘not

allowed’ to talk about what is happening at the ‘other’ home.

• Child feels s/he is the one who is divorced - that when s/he is with dad, s/he ‘is not ‘allowed’ to love or speak about mom and vice versa.

Remember that children identify strongly with BOTH their parents • The child see themselves as being

comprised of ‘bits’ of both parents. • Therefore an attack on one parent

could be interpreted and experienced as an attack on the child him or herself. Consequently, the child may be left feeling confused, angry, anxious and insecure.

• Children, more often than not, become collateral damage in the divorce process. Parents need to actively work against this.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

CELEBRATE BIG AND SMALL SUCCESSES THIS MONTHAssessing Your Weight and Health Risk

Assessment of weight and health risk involves using three key measures:1. Body mass index (BMI) 2. Waist circumference 3. Risk factors for diseases and conditions

associated with obesity

Body Mass Index (BMI)BMI is a useful measure of overweight and obesity. It is calculated from your height and weight. BMI is an estimate of body fat and a good gauge of your risk for diseases that can occur with more body fat. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for certain diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers.

Use the BMI Calculator or BMI Tables to estimate your body fat. The BMI score means the following:

BMI

Underweight Below 18.5

Normal 18.5–24.9

Overweight 25.0–29.9

Obesity 30.0 and Above

Although BMI can be used for most men and women, it does have some limits:• It may overestimate body fat in athletes

and others who have a muscular build.

• It may underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle.

Waist Circumference Measuring waist circumference helps screen for possible health risks that come with overweight and obesity. If most of your fat is around your waist rather than at your hips, you’re at a higher risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes. This risk goes up with a waist size that is greater than 88 cm for women or greater than 102 cm for men. To correctly measure your waist, stand and place a tape measure around your middle, just above your hipbones. Measure your waist just after you breathe out.

Risk Factors for Health Topics Associated With ObesityAlong with being overweight or obese, the following conditions will put you at greater risk for heart disease and other conditions:

Risk Factors• High blood pressure (hypertension)• High LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol)• Low HDL cholesterol ("good"

cholesterol)• High triglycerides• High blood glucose (sugar)• Family history of premature heart

disease• Physical inactivity• Cigarette smoking

For people who are considered obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30) or those who are overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9) and have two or more risk factors, it is recommended that you lose weight.

The good news is even a small weight loss (between 5 and 10 percent of your current weight) will help lower your risk of developing those diseases.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

A 5-K is a perfect goal for new runners – and it’s a great way to test yourself if you’ve done a few races already.

When you took your first running steps, crossing a finish line may have been the furthest thing

from your mind; but now you’re running on a regular basis, you might be wondering whether you’re ready for your first race. “A 5-K is the perfect target for budding runners to set their sights on,” says coach Russell Holman (runfaster-pb.com). “It doesn’t take months to prepare for, and the distance is manageable enough not to intimidate.” The challenge could simply be to finish, to run all the way to the line, or to achieve a particular time goal. And it’s not so punishing that it’ll take weeks before you’re ready to toe the line again.

It’s also an extremely popular race distance, so when you’re ready, you’ll have no problem finding a 5-K event to enter. Finish, then finish better

The primary goal for your first 5-K is to finish – with a smile on your face. Even though you may have progressed beyond run/walk, there’s no need to rule out walking altogether. A good rule to follow is to run as much as you can, but walk as much as you need.

Consistent easy runs of 20 – 30 minutes build a good base of stamina. But to hone 5-K fitness, you’ll need to do two things. First, focus on making one of your weekly runs a little bit longer. Increasing by small increments minimises the injury risk associated with ramping up the volume too aggressively. It’s recommended that you build your ‘long run’ to 8 – 10km. It will also boost your confidence in covering the race distance. The second thing is to add a challenge to one of your weekly runs. This could be in the form of faster running or hill training. Research in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that six weeks of hill training or flat-ground interval training both elicited improvements in ‘time to exhaustion’.

Hills develop leg strength and challenge your cardiovascular system without

adding too much musculoskeletal stress, and Spanish research last year found high-intensity intervals improved stride length.

Running wellWarming up – for training and racing – is vital. A study from Manhattan College in New York found that just five minutes of warming up enabled runners to exercise for longer than did launching straight in. Start with a brisk walk, incorporating some mobility exercises such as heel-and-toe walking, bringing your knees to your chest, walking lunges and flicking your heels up to your bottom. Then begin to jog at an effortless pace before working up to your desired speed.

Everyone has their own running style, but there is some common ground when it comes to good technique: strong posture (think tall, but relaxed), quick and light feet (a high ‘cadence’ or stride rate) and minimal braking between strides.

Good running form helps in minimising injury risk – but adding some regular strength training to your weekly routine will lower the chances further. Try variations of lunges, squats, step-ups and dead lifts.

Countdown to race dayAs race day approaches, wind down your training to ensure you wake up feeling raring to go. But don’t stop altogether – a couple of short runs will keep you ticking over. Skip the pre-race pasta-fest: Five kilometres isn’t far enough to require carbo-loading the night before. Eating too much may make you wake up feeling sluggish or full. Just eat your usual evening meal.

On paceA sure way to finish well is to get the pace right. But this can be tricky. Even at world-record level, most 5-K runners run

the first kilometre a little faster than their average pace. And in a study comparing performances in which runners were instructed to run the first kilometre at either goal pace or three to six percent faster, a fast start tended to result in a better finish time.

Lightening the loadYou can make your race debut in any comfy clothing and a pair of running shoes, but lightweight garments that fit well are best.

Flappy clothes will also increase wind resistance and may distract you, or work loose. Commit to a comfy but minimal race-day outfit that’s tried and tested. As for that bottle? You don’t need any fluid for a 5-K– and certainly not a sports drink.

Six Success Strategies1. Start right - Stick to a warm-up you’ve

used in training.2. Sound on - A study in the Journal of

Strength and Conditioning Research found that listening to motivational music during a 5-K race improved performance.

3. Find your space - Don’t automatically go to the back of the field. Look at banners denoting estimated finish times and line up in the appropriate area.

4. Don’t panic - If it’s crowded over the first kilometre, don’t waste too much energy trying to battle your way through.

5. Anticipate discomfort - Chasing a PB is tough, so be prepared to ‘embrace’ pain. If you feel breathless, focus on your exhalations.

6. Latch on – to a fellow runner - A study from Bath University in the UK found that when two runners ran in front or behind one another, they felt running was easier, even though there was no difference in their heart rate or finish time.

Good luck out there!

RUN YOUR FIRST (OR FASTEST) 5-K!

LIFESTYLE

The Mid-Century Modern design movement is generally believed to have spanned from the mid- 1940s to

the early 1970s and influenced everything from architecture to textiles. Making an appearance shortly after WWII, the style was prompted by a number of factors: newfound optimism and prosperity; availability of new technologies and materials and the migration to urban areas with smaller living spaces. In home décor this translated to bright palettes, simple forms, organic influences, efficiency, flexibility and functionality.

Whilst some may find the style to be anything but ‘modern’ in 2019 it has gained a cult following which continues to influence design trends. Fortunately, the cleanliness and minimalism of mid-century furniture makes it easy to blend with other types of home décor so, whether you want to become a retro slave or simply dabble, here are some tips for bringing the style back to life in your space:

FurnitureWhen shopping this style, the majority of your purchases will most likely be from second- hand and ‘antique’ dealers.

Complement these with new pieces from furniture manufacturers who mimic mid-century lines. You can gradually add pieces starting with something you already need.

What to look out for: • Interesting, multi-functional storage

units combining cupboards and open display shelves.

NOSTALGICALLY NOW: MID-CENTURY MODERN DECOR

LIFESTYLE

• Wooden- framed couches or Danish upholstered tight-back couches with high arms and tapered peg legs.

• Armchairs: Egg, Eames, Butterfly, Ball, Womb or Swan

• Low coffee tables and side tables with peg or hairpin legs (brass trim and caps are welcome)

• Low, sleek headboards and dressing tables

• Extendable dining tables and roomy sideboards

• Tulip tables• Drinks cabinets or trolleys • Record cabinets (preferably with a

record player and records)

Whilst many mid-century masterpieces are made of solid maple, teak, walnut, oak, beech, cherry or rosewood, don’t overlook pieces made using veneer, plastics or resins. These were not only used to make cheaper furniture but also for lasting functionality.

ColourMid-century colour trends shifted from bright colours in the 1950s to earthy colours in the 1960s so you can’t go too wrong. A mid-century palette can include red, pink, orange, mustard, gold, chartreuse, bottle green, lime green, olive green, teal, turquoise and/or brown. Due to the resurgence of the trend, local paint manufacturers have released collections where mid-century tones are given modern makeovers. Enquire about these at your hardware store. AccessoriesLighting: Bold lighting is key in taking your home back to this artistic era. Sputnik chandeliers or bubble/saucer lamps should dangle from the ceiling, Luxo lamps should light up side tables and arc floor lamps should preside over living rooms. Wall hangings: Sunburst mirrors are not only iconic of this era but also create a light and airy feeling. Add some abstract geometric prints to suit your chosen colour scheme.

Soft furnishingsFor a quick and easy mid-century pop

update a lamp with a retro print shade or style a plain couch with cushions made from 1950s fabrics in geometric patterns. Velvet in the right hue will also do the trick.Plants: The look is not complete without indoor plants. Combine contrasting sizes and elevations by hanging them in macramé holders, placing them on counters, on the floor or on plant tables or stands. Brass and peg- leg planters add a nice touch. Try Fiddle Leaf Figs, Snake Plants and Split Leaf Philodendrons.

By incorporating some of these elements, you’re on your way to achieving a retro mid-century look. The meaning of ‘retro’ is debatable. Some say it refers to ‘a style from the past’ or ‘outdated’, some say it’s ‘nostalgic’. One thing’s for sure, this retro is here to stay!

BACK PAGE HUMOUR

I called the meeting to order. It was not a very big turnout, especially for a club with so many potential members and

considering it was our Extraordinary Annual Meeting to mark the 25th anniversary of Densa.

Densa is the society for those whose IQ falls within that exceedingly wide band that lies between, let’s say, that of an elderly herring and your average Member of Parliament.

Most of all, it is a requisite that a Densan’s IQ must be well below that of a Mensan.

Mensa, as you probably know, was established at Oxford University in 1943 to bring together highly intelligent people. Members had to have an IQ above 132 which confines membership to the top two per cent of humanity.

I once set out to take Mensa’s IQ test but couldn’t find the venue.

So here was our Silver Jubilee meeting. My secretary, Threnody Higginbottom (I call her Miss Smith) kindly agreed to take the minutes providing everybody spoke very slowly.

I asked her to again count the attendance. She said it was still six which was a quorum if we counted the caretaker at the back of the hall and the fact that Liz Wannamaker had brought her little cross-eyed sausage dog, Porky.

I adjusted my presidential sash which is of a fetching purple material, although, I noticed too late, it did need pressing and had a dab of tetrachloride here and there. My sash has ‘PRESIDANT’ proudly emblazoned on it.

With a polite cough, I declared the meeting open.

Everybody clapped and the little dog yapped.

My celebratory address carried a warning to Densans regarding our growing responsibilities.

Lots of high-IQ people are leaving South Africa because of crime, both government and the falling standard of our soccer. This

brain drain throws an extra burden on us Densans because, very soon, there’ll only be us left to run South Africa.

Aside: Secretly, I welcome the brain drain because (dear reader) I have always found intelligent people difficult to understand. I recall driving on the M1 in rush hour when a female member of Mensa was explaining something on the radio. I had to concentrate so hard, my car juddered to a halt in the middle lane.

Mensa’s very name sounds as if it comes from somewhere far out in the firmament, like De Aar or Venterspost.

“Be warned,” I said to the assembly, “Mensans are very vulnerable.”

I read to my members an extract from a Mensa International newsletter in which a Mensan described how, at a meeting of the Academy for Future Science, “I nearly blew my mind”. (Seriously, that’s what he said).

It was, I said, an indication that Mensans are very susceptible to this kind of injury. They might be able to read Hawkin’s A Short History of Time while, say, chewing

gum, but ask them something simple like “What is the square root of the Sri Lankan cricket XI?” and it can blow their minds as surely as one blows an egg – foop!

Apparently, what nearly blew this Mensan’s mind, was a scientist who stated, “Aliens are stealing humans to experiment on them. Some are returned. Some are not.” (I’m not lying. That’s what he wrote.)

For years I’d suspected this. I suspect that aliens came in the night to steal people’s brains while they sleep. They will probably end up being pan-fried in fancy Martian restaurants.

When the victims wake up they, of course, are none the wiser and become seized by a desire to enter politics and become Cabinet Ministers.

Thus have aliens come to rule the world.

I took a sip from my glass of water. Now, where was I?

Hey, Threnody! Where’s everybody? Where’s our quorum gone?

Threnody? Thren… Porky?
