Though it is slightly different from what we saw two years ago, Bioshock Infinite is one of the best games of this console generation. The game takes place in 1912 as the player assumes Booker DeWitt, an exPinkerton agent with debts to pay, who is sent to save a woman named Elizabeth from the floating city of Columbia. Columbia is run by a man named Comstock, otherwise known as “The Prophet,” who lifted the city to the sky and taught his citizens to worship Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as if they were gods.Meanwhile, there’s a civil war between those that believe in this American exceptionalism called the Founders and the ethnic working class, the Vox Populi. There are also strange sightings around the city that appear to be ripples in time and space, and Elizabeth seems to be the cause of these extraordinary feats. The story may sound crazy already, but it only gets stranger from there, right until the credits roll. The storytelling is a feat within itself, worthy of essays dedicated to it. Booker can only carry two weapons at one time, and it is mostly standard fare with pistols, machine guns and rockets that can all be upgraded with more damage or less recoil. He also can cast magic, deemed as “Vigors” and replenished by salt, by lifting enemies into the air, summoning crows to distract and shocking with electricity. The combat is satisfying, though once you find the right combo of guns and Vigors, you may just do the same combo for the rest of the game. Once Elizabeth is found, you escort her throughout most of the adventure, but the game does not turn into one long escort mission in the tedious sense. She does not have a health bar nor do any of the enemies attack her. That fact can be jarring at first, but it’s not worth worrying about when fighting 20 enemies at once. During battle, Elizabeth may find extra health, ammo or salt, which comes up as abutton prompt. Pressing the button snaps the camera towards Elizabeth’s position as she throws you an item. The camera then snaps back to the action. It’s fast, fluid and better than scavenging for supplies in midbattle. The only problem I have with the game is its checkpoint system. The game autosaves usually when walking into a new area or after a giant enemy encounter, and there is no manual save button. Quitting anytime sends you back to your last checkpoint, so sometimes I had to play much longer than I wanted for the game to save my progress. It’s a very small complaint when up against its mindbending story, large scale battles and an environment so detailed, I spent hours just wandering and searching every corner to make sure I didn’t miss any items or secrets. Bioshock Infinite is one of those rare games that has everybody talking to understand its sophistication by paying attention to every little detail. It’s a frenzy I haven’t seen since, well, the original Bioshock. CLASSIFIEDS Place YOUR Classified Ad right here on The Montclarion website. LOW RATES & EXTENDED EXPOSURE. After releasing the critically acclaimed Bioshock back in 2007, Irrational Games started to work on their next game,

Bioshock Infinite, way back when they first debuted it in 2011. It was a demo that everyone fell in love with, even though the

developer explicitly stated the game would not released for another few years. Though it is slightly different from what we

saw two years ago, Bioshock Infinite is one of the best games of this console generation.

The game takes place in 1912 as the player assumes Booker DeWitt, an exPinkerton agent with debts to pay, who is sent

to save a woman named Elizabeth from the floating city of Columbia.

Columbia is run by a man named Comstock, otherwise known as “The Prophet,” who lifted the city to the sky and taught his

citizens to worship Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson as if they were gods.Meanwhile, there’s

a civil war between those that believe in this American exceptionalism called the Founders and the ethnic working class,

the Vox Populi.

There are also strange sightings around the city that appear to be ripples in time and

space, and Elizabeth seems to be the cause of these extraordinary feats. The story may sound crazy already, but it only

gets stranger from there, right until the credits roll. The storytelling is a feat within itself, worthy of essays dedicated to it.

Booker can only carry two weapons at one time, and it is mostly standard fare with pistols, machine guns and rockets that

can all be upgraded with more damage or less recoil. He also can cast magic, deemed as “Vigors” and replenished by salt,

by lifting enemies into the air, summoning crows to distract and shocking with electricity.

The combat is satisfying, though once you find the right combo of guns and Vigors, you may just do the same combo for the

rest of the game.

Once Elizabeth is found, you escort her throughout most of the adventure, but the game does not turn into one long escort

mission in the tedious sense. She does not have a health bar nor do any of the enemies attack her. That fact can be jarring

at first, but it’s not worth worrying about when fighting 20 enemies at once.

During battle, Elizabeth may find extra health, ammo or salt, which comes up as abutton prompt.

Pressing the button snaps the camera towards Elizabeth’s position as she throws you an item. The camera then snaps

back to the action. It’s fast, fluid and better than scavenging for supplies in midbattle.

The only problem I have with the game is its checkpoint system. The game autosaves usually when walking into a new

area or after a giant enemy encounter, and there is no manual save button. Quitting anytime sends you back to your last

checkpoint, so sometimes I had to play much longer than I wanted for the game to save my progress.

It’s a very small complaint when up against its mindbending story, large scale battles and an environment so detailed, I

spent hours just wandering and searching every corner to make sure I didn’t miss any items or secrets.

Bioshock Infinite is one of those rare games that has everybody talking to understand its sophistication by paying attention

to every little detail. It’s a frenzy I haven’t seen since, well, the original Bioshock.
