It can be useful in:

Initial evaluation of patients at intake as an objective method for symptom assessment

Measuring patient progress during and after treatment to monitor change

OTHER CHECKLIST AND INVENTORY

Page 16: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

CONNER’S RATING SCALES –REVISED

– Focus on the assessment of hyperactivity and other child behavioral problems

Page 17: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

How to use this test:used for routine screenings in schools, mental health clinics, residential treatment centers, pediatric offices, Juvenile detention facilities, child protective agencies, and outpatient settings.

Page 18: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

The test can help:Measure hyperactivity in children and adolescents through routine screening• Establish a base point• Provide valuable structured and normed information• Provide a perspective of the child’s behavior

Page 19: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

CHILDREN’S DEPRESSION INVENTORY

- focus on the child’s depression and other depressive experiences

GOLDFARB FEAR OF FAT SCALE- Used with eating disorder clients

Page 20: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

ASPERGER DIAGNOSTIC SCALE- used to evaluate ASPERGER SYNDROME

among children ages 5-18 years old.

- the child does not take the exam. Just about anyone who knows the child well

answers the fifty questions.

CASE STUDY: JOSE and the BDI, CBCL,

and SCL-90-R

Page 26: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

JOSE is a 17 year-old Hispanic high school junior. He lives with his parents and three siblings. Jose identifies himself as a homosexual.

Page 27: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

Referral Question: Parents noticed an abrupt shift from Jose’s

typically cheerful and energetic demeanor to a pattern of tearfulness, lethargy, anxiety, irritability and inability to eat or sleep adequately.

Test administered:- Interview, BDI, CBCL and SCL-90-R

Page 28: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

BRIEF SUMMARY ANDINTERPRETAION OF RESULTS:

-Jose score on BDI places him in the “severely depressed” ranged of this measure.

-On the CBCL (PARENT REPORT FORM) significant elevations were obtained on the anxious/depressed , attention problems, somatic complaints and withdrawn scale.

Page 29: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

-On the SCL-90-R significant elevation were revealed on the Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Paranoia and Positive Symptom Distress Index Scales.

Physiological Testing

Page 31: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

- Psychological states such as anxiety and stress can be assessed through non invasive techniques that measure physiological

activity.

Page 32: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

NEUROIMAGING techniques

-(MRI) MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

-(CAT) COMPUTERIZED TOMOGRAPHY

-(PET) POSITION EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY

Page 33: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR
Page 34: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

POLYGRAPHS OR LIE DETECTOR TEST

- Use to assess physiological activities such as blood pressure,

heart rate, respiration, and muscle tension which indicates

levels of arousal, stress and anxiety.

Page 35: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

Biofeedback equipment- Use to measure physiological activity

- Use also to assess people and treat people with overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system.

Page 36: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

The Big Picture

Page 37: INTERVIEWING AND OBSERVING BEHAVIOR

Interviews, behavioral observations, checklist and

inventories, and physiological measures provide important information that can be used

in conjunction with other tests to make diagnostic conclusions

and intervention decisions.
