Who is Vivien Racault? I’m not your average artist who trained at Fine Arts school. In fact, I dabble in the arts, social sciences research - par-ticularly on literature - publishing, mul-timedia, advertising, training, graphic design, photography and music…My photographs are as a result domi-nated by a writer’s discourse while in my music a filmmaker’s vision actually becomes evident. In my exhibitions, these categories always give way to a coherent and structured world where reason, the imagination and the senses can be satisfied.I try to be faithful to my romantic and pre-marxist vision of the ‘creator’ artist, and try to avoid imposing a hierarchy on various cultural forms. Je n'ai pas le profil de l'artiste-type avec cursus académique en école des Beaux-arts. Je suis en fait un touche-à-tout : arts plastiques, recherche en sciences humaines - plus particulièrement en lit-térature - édition, multimédia, publicité, formation, design graphique, photogra-phie et musique... Conséquences : dans mes photogra-phies domine le discours d'un écrivain alors que dans ma musique c’est en fait la vision d'un cinéaste qui surgit. Dans mes expositions ces catégories finissent toujours par s'effacer au profit d'un univ-ers cohérent et structuré, dans lequel le raisonnement, l'imagination et les sens peuvent être satisfaits.Je tente d'être fidèle à ma vision finale-

references in my work to the Bible, art history and modern science, but also to the ‘B-grade’ series of the 1950s, social networks and reality television. I’m ac-tually more of a ‘creator of worlds’ than an artist. Does your work fit into a particular aesthetic tradition? I seek to develop an œuvre which is part of the great cosmogonic tradi-tion, from our civilisations’ founding creation myths to the personal myths of Baudelaire and Lovecraft. From a more formal point of view, in terms of photog-raphy, I think I come closer to a specific pictorial tendency in modern photog-raphy, which you can find in the works of Gregory Crewdson and Cindy Sher-man, or even filmmakers such as David Lynch. I like fantastical art in general.

What links you to Reunion island?

I was born and grew up on Reunion is-land, which is near Madagascar. As all my family lives there, it is my centre, my origin, and I suffer when I’m away for too long. It’s a magnificent island whose beauty lies in its contrasts: the saturated colours, the massive craggy hills bathed in shadows and light, the vegetation’s incredible vitality, the violence of the elements and random events, the overpopulation... But also the tranquil cool of thousands of gullies irrigating the volcanic earth, the way of life of the creole people who maintain a close connection to nature. I owe the core of my imagination to Reunion Is-land, as well as my palette of colours and the chiaroscuro in my photographs.

ment très romantique, pré-marxiste, de l'artiste «démiurge» et cherche à ne pas hiérarchiser les diverses formes cul-turelles : on trouvera dans mon travail des références à la Bible, à l'histoire de l'art ou aux sciences contemporaines, mais aussi aux séries B de genre des années 50, aux réseaux sociaux ou à la télé-réalité. Je suis en fait davantage un «créateur d'univers» qu'un plasticien.

Votre travail s'inscrit-il dans une tradi-tion esthétique précise?

Je cherche à développer une œuvre globale qui s'inscrit dans la grande tradi-tion cosmogonique, des mythes originels fondateurs de nos civilisations humaines aux mythes personnels de Baudelaire ou Lovecraft. D'un point de vue plus formel, en ce qui concerne la photographie, je pense m'approcher d'une certaine tend-ance pictorialiste de la photographie contemporaine que l'on retrouve dans les oeuvres de Gregory Crewdson et de Cindy Sherman, ou encore chez des cinéastes tel David Lynch. J'aime l'art fantastique en général.

Quels sont vos liens avec l'île de La Réunion ?

Je suis né et j'ai grandi à l'île de La Réunion, près de Madagascar. Toute ma famille vit là-bas, c'est donc mon centre, mon origine, et je souffre d'éloignement quand je pars trop longtemps. C'est sur-tout une île magnifique dont la beauté est tout en contrastes : couleurs sat-urées, reliefs gigantesques découpés par l'ombre et la lumière, vitalité incroy-able de la flore, violence des éléments et des faits-divers, surpopulation... mais aussi fraîcheur sereine des milliers de ra-vines qui irriguent cette terre volcanique, art de vivre de la population créole qui a souvent gardé un rapport intime à la na-ture. Je dois à ce lieu le cœur de mon imaginaire, ma palette de couleurs et le clair-obscur caractéristique de mes pho-tographies.

What is the theme of the exhibition to be held at the Alliance Française de Melbourne and what are your plans for the future? I’ll present a multimedia exhibition en-titled Between Plant and Ghost at the Alliance française. It will be a fantasti-cal poetic and critical reflexion on the notion of evolution. Specifically, the radical transformation of our conscious-ness and of our connection to the world, lead on by the dematerialisation proc-ess which has characterised the human story since its beginning.Besides that, for a year I’ve been work-ing on an artists’ book entitled Six zhèrs lo soir (‘Six o’clock in the evening’), and which will be devoted to fantasy tales written in creole by Emmeline Payet-Coupama, along the lines of Extraor-dinary Stories by Edgar Allan Poe. I’m in charge of the book’s graphic design and the photographs that will illustrate each story.At a future date, I hope to work on Origi-ne, which will constitute the second part of a triptych begun with my exhibition Mystères (‘Mysteries’).

Quel est le thème de l’exposition proposée à l'Alliance française de Melbourne et quels sont les projets à venir ?

A l'Alliance française je présenterai une exposition multimédia appelée Between Plant and Ghost. Il s'agit d'une rêverie fantastique, poétique et critique sur la notion d’évolution. En particulier sur la transformation radicale de notre con-science et de notre rapport au monde induite par le processus de dématériali-sation qui caractérise l’épopée humaine depuis son origine. Sinon je travaille depuis un an sur un projet de livre d'artistes appelé Six zhèrs lo soir et qui sera consacré à des contes fantastiques écrits en créole par Emme-line Payet-Coupama, dans la lignée des Histoires Extraordinaires d'Edgar Poe. Je me charge du design graphique de l'ouvrage et des photographies qui vont illustrer chaque histoire.Dans un futur plus lointain, je souhaite travailler sur Origine, la deuxième partie du triptyque dont mon exposition Mys-tères constituait la première partie.
