Dani California The red hot chilli peppers use an intertextual

reference in the form of the intro to Dani California. They depict the band in a sort of spoof to an old Elvis Presley performance. This is clearly evident by the quiff style wigs worn by the guitarists. This is also shown by the iconic moves of Elvis portrayed by the lead singers and the way in which he hold the microphone. They chose to use this because it gives the video and interesting twist on the classic rock performance video. However they do follow a convention as the lead singer is still the centre of attention as he is dressed in exotic dress.

Californication The red hot chilli peppers again refer to another

source in their californication video. The video is heavily based on animation and specifically the similarity to the “grand theft auto” game franchise. This establishes the target audience of the video as young adults and gives breaks between the performance elements of the video. This also gives the band a interesting way to promote themselves as they are represented in the game doing stunts.

You know me Robbie Williams is well know for his performance

elements of his video. In “you know me” he is shown as a rabbit figure. We as an audience presume he is referring to Alice in wonderland. This is also shown by the previous shot of him falling through the mirror and down a dirt hole, this is also alike the Alice in wonderland story. This is used because it give the video a familiar narrative and allows him to attract people that he would not usually listen to his music, for instance young children.

Love story This video is heavily based on a narrative and this is

how Taylor Swift is able to intertextually refer to the Romeo and Juliet story. It is a very clear reference as she repeatedly mentions the words “Romeo” , “Juliet” and “balcony”. The video also refers to the story by using the ballroom dancing that shows a likeness to that of the time period. The video also has scene which share a likeness to the 1996 film of the story. This reference is also another clear use of a popular story being used to relate to an audience.

Eye of the tiger and Roar Both song have similar themes, however they portray

them in very different ways. An example of this is their repeated use of the lines “I got the eye of the tiger” and “It's the eye of the tiger” that share a particular likeness. However the videos are completely different. For example Katy Perry’s video depicts her struggle to overcome the challenges of the jungle and become the queen. On the other hand eye of the tiger shows the band performing and singing about their struggle to succeed in life.
