3INTERPRETATIONS OF THE HUMAN FIGURE

A curated exhibition of drawings, paintings, design,

scuplture and other works inspired by the human figure.

In 2012, the Visual Arts Unit of the Department

of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA), UWI, St.

Augustine, hosted a grand exhibition of work by alumni,

current students and past and present lecturers, to

commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the

Department and the Unit. The curatorial committee of

that exhibition committed to hosting regular themed

exhibitions as a platform to show the wide range of

work produced by our students, alumni and lecturers.

Throughout the last year we did much work based

around the human figure including figure drawing

workshops, and costume design and experimental

performance workshops and agreed that our first

themed exhibition would be a show celebrating the

human figure.

We launched a call for work inspired by the human

figure in August 2013, and our alumni, current students

and lecturers have responded to our call in a variety of

expressions including drawings in various media, digital

illustrations and installations, paintings and photography.

We took the decision to show this body of work at the

Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago in support of its

70th anniversary and in an effort to move our work

outside the walls of the University of the West Indies.

The Visual Arts Unit of the DCFA has a long history

with the Art Society, and this venue was the obvious

choice for this exhibition as we seek to continue to build

our relationship together. We look forward to much

collaboration with the Art Society in the future.
