About Interplay | MAM Essence Management Administrator

All storage systems used with Interplay MAM — disks, video servers, third-party archive management systems, and so on — are interfaced through a dedicated Web Service called an “Essence Server.”

Interplay MAM Administrator provides an administrative GUI — called Essence Management Administrator — that manages the administration and configuration of the storage pools and carriers on each Essence Server in Interplay MAM. Pools and carriers are used to abstract from the respective capabilities of the individual storage device.

Basic Concepts

When working with Essence Management Administrator, consider the following basic Interplay MAM Essence Management concepts:

Essence Manager

The Essence Manager is the core component of Essence Management. It contains information about all essences that are registered in Interplay MAM. Essences are organized in Essence Packages that group several essences semantically — for example, the essences of a movie trailer. The Essence Manager can distinguish multiple resolutions of a media object, such as high-resolution video files and browse proxies. It identifies the primary proxy when multiple proxies are stored in different resolutions, or bit rates. The Essence Manager also manages and provides access to keyframes and thumbnails.

About Interplay | MAM Essence Management Administrator

13

Essence Servers

Essence Servers facilitate the integration of different devices and third-party storage management systems. They provide inventory information, essence processing, device control, and file transfers, including partial restore, if supported by third-party systems for the stored formats.

Essence Servers manage the devices on which essences are stored, as well as the essences and essence packages. They manage and control access to essences, essence creation and deletion, and communication with Essence Management.

A client or component requesting an essence contacts the device through the Essence Manager. The Essence Manager decides which Content Delivery Server is to play out the essence.

Content Delivery Servers

Content Delivery Servers control the delivery of an essence to a client or component that requested the essence. Essence Manager can distribute delivery tasks to different Content Delivery Servers. A Content Delivery Server can access several essence pools.

Pools

An essence pool is a device or part of a device that holds one or more carriers. They are defined in the access area of an Essence Server. An Essence Server can manage multiple essence pools. Different Content Delivery Servers can access an essence pool at the same time, but an essence pool can only access one carrier at a time. The correlation between essence pools and carriers is 1 to {0|1}. A pool contains only one carrier if there are no removable media, but an essence pool can contain different types of carriers, such as hard disks and tape libraries.

Carriers

A carrier is a physical medium that stores essence files. Carriers can be disks, tapes, or even entire tape archive systems. Carriers can be externalized; that is, they can be removed from and inserted into a pool. This enables Essence Management to support removable media, such as optional disks in a drive. The scope of a carrier depends on the granularity that is required to access an essence. A carrier does not have to be assigned to an essence pool, but it cannot be assigned to more than one essence pool.

The following illustration shows the interaction between Essence Management components.

1. Open the Essence Server view.

2. Select “(all)” in the Show list of the Pools pane to display all pools.

3. Select the desired pool in the Pools pane.

4. Click New in the Carriers pane.

The Add Carrier dialog opens.

Meaning

1 Determines which carriers are shown in the Select Carrier box — all carriers, only carriers that are assigned to the pool that is selected in the Pools pane, or carriers that are not assigned to any pool.

2 Lists the names of carriers, depending on the selection in the Show list — all carriers (“all”), only carriers that are assigned to the pool selected in the Pools pane (“assigned”), or only unassigned carriers (“unassigned”).

In an Interplay MAM standard installation the following carriers are preconfigured:

• COLLATERALS: A “directory” carrier with Write & Delete access that is assigned to pool COLLATERALS; its HSM Status is “Online.”

• HIRES: A “directory” carrier with Write & Delete access that is assigned to pool HIRES; its HSM Status is “Online.”

• KEYFRAMES: A “directory” carrier with Write & Delete access that is assigned to pool KEYFRAMES; its HSM Status is “Online.”

• PROXY: A “directory” carrier with Write & Delete access that is assigned to pool PROXY; its HSM Status is “Online.”

3 Adds a new carrier and assigns it to a pool. For additional information, see “Adding a Carrier” on page 38.

4 Deletes the selected carrier. For additional information, see “Deleting a Carrier” on page 42.

5 Edits the carrier’s properties. For additional information, see “Editing Carriers” on page 40.

Adding a Carrier

39

5. Type a unique carrier name in the Carrier Name text box. It is displayed as the carrier’s name in the Device folder of Interplay MAM Desktop’s Workspace and Essence view.

6. (Option) Change the automatically generated GUID in the Carrier GUID text box by entering another unique GUID.

7. (Option) Select an Essence Server from the Essence Server list to determine which pools can be selected in the Pool list. Only pools that are assigned to the selected Essence Server are shown in the Pool list. If you select “(all)” in the Essence Server list, the Pool list offers all pools for selection — not just those that are assigned to the Essence Server.

8. Select the pool to which the carrier is to be assigned from the Pool list. If you do not want to assign the carrier to a pool, select “(none)” in the Pool list (not recommended for a standard Interplay MAM installation).

By default, the pool that is selected in the Pool pane is preselected in the Pool list. The selection in the Essence Server list determines the pools that can be selected.

The Pool list is grayed out if you selected an Essence Server in the Essence Server list that has no pool or only one pool assigned.

9. Select the carrier type from the Carrier Type list. This is DIRECTORY in an Interplay MAM standard installation.

10. Select how Essence Management accesses the carrier from the Carrier Access list. Possible values are Read only, Write, and Write & Delete.

11. Select the online status of the carrier from the Carrier HSM State list. Possible values are Online, Near Online, and Offline. Offline is only recommended for customized installations that support the use of removable carriers — not for a standard Interplay MAM installation.

12. Click OK to close the Add Carrier dialog.

The new carrier is shown and highlighted in the Carriers pane.

n Essence Server Disk WS only reads its configuration settings when it starts, so to make the new carrier usable, restart the application pool in which Essence Server Disk is running (MAM_2000_Backend2) in Interplay MAM Service Manager.

Editing CarriersYou can edit the properties of a carrier in the Carriers pane, as described in the following procedure.

To edit the properties of a carrier:

1. Open the Essence Server view.

2. Select “(all)” in the Show list of the Carriers pane to display all carriers.

3. Select the desired carrier in the Carriers pane.

4. Click Edit in the Carriers pane.

The Edit Carrier dialog opens. Once created, “Carrier GUID” — the carrier’s ID used throughout the MAM system — becomes a read-only field and cannot be changed.

41

5. Change the properties of the carrier as needed.

t Change the carrier name.

t Change the assignment of the carrier to a pool or release the assignment by selecting the “(none)” value.

n Creating an invalid pool assignment compromises functionality. Depending on the pool, you may not be able to play back or transfer essences, or display keyframes in MAM Desktop’s Retrieval.

t (Option, not applicable in an Interplay MAM standard installation) Change the carrier type.

t Change the carrier access mode.

t Change the carrier’s HSM status.

6. Click OK to close the Edit Carrier dialog.

The changes are applied to the carrier.

n Some changes to carrier properties take immediate effect in MAM Desktop’s Retrieval, but to make all changes fully functional in MAM Desktop’s Retrieval and Workspace, restart the application pool in which Essence Server Disk is running (MAM_2000_Backend2) in Interplay MAM Service Manager.

Deleting a Carrier

42

Deleting a CarrierYou can delete carriers as described in the following procedure. Prerequisite: The carrier is not referenced by files or objects.

To delete a carrier:

1. Open the Essence Server view.

2. Select “(all)” in the Show list of the Carriers pane to display all carriers.

3. Select the desired carrier in the Carriers pane.

4. Click Delete in the Carriers pane.

The Delete carrier security prompt opens.

5. Click OK.

One of the following happens:

- If the files on the carrier are not referenced by essences, the security prompt is closed and the carrier is deleted.

- If a file on the carrier is still referenced by an essence, a “Deletion not successful” message opens. Click OK to close the message.

5 How to....?

The following topics provide information about tasks that require specific configuration steps in Essence Management Administrator or other MAM administration tools:

• Configuring Rules for Selecting the Optimal Pool Access

• Disabling the File Download in MAM Desktop’s Essence View

Configuring Rules for Selecting the Optimal Pool Access

Interplay |MAM allows to replicate essence files on multiple essence pools. This feature can be used to support the selection of the optimal essence pool with regard to the requesting client. When configured properly, clients can be directed to the 'nearest' essence pool to optimize network latency, network throughput and overall performance. The property of being near to an essence pool can be expressed in terms of the belonging to a specific subnet or domain. To this end Interplay MAM allows to define pool priority rules for each essence pool. A pool priority rule consists of a condition and an associated priority value. All matching rules contribute to the cumulative priority of the essence pool. A higher priority value means that the pool has a higher precedence.

Interplay MAM supports three types of pool priority rules.

Page 45: Interplay | MAM Essence Management Administrator User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Interplay... · 4 If you have questions, ask. "Derived works" includes all pr ograms

Configuring Rules for Selecting the Optimal Pool Access

45

n The pool priority feature must be enabled by setting the value of the setting LoadBalancingEnabled in the profile EssenceManagerWS to “true”.

Rule Evaluation

The selection of the effective pool is based on sets of pool priority rules. These rules are evaluated dynamically every time a client requests access to an essence file. The rule evaluation is defined as follows:

1. The Essence Manager determines the list of all pools which hold a copy of the requested essence file.

2. The Essence Manager assigns a priority to every pool in the list.

- Online pools are assigned a predefined priority boost as defined in the setting LoadBalancing/OnlinePriorityBoost of the EssenceManagerWS profile. The default priority boost value for online pools is set to 1000.

- Nearline pools are assigned a predefined priority boost as defined in the setting LoadBalancing/NearOnlinePriorityBoost in the EssenceManagerWS profile. The default priority boost value for near-online pools is set to 0.

- All other pools are assigned a pool priority of 0.

3. The Essence Manager evaluates the pool priority rules associated with each pool.

- If the requesting client's IP address is an IP V4 address, the Essence Manager evaluates all rules of type IP V4. Each rule that matches contributes with its configured priority to the dynamic, accumulated priority of the pool.

- If the requesting client's IP address is an IP V6 address, the Essence Manager evaluates all rules of type IP V6. Each rule that matches contributes with its configured priority to the dynamic, accumulated priority of the pool.

Priority rule Description

IP V4 The pool priority rule defines an IP V4 address range using Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) notation. An IP V4 rule matches if the IP V4 address of the requesting client is inside the subnet as defined in the rule

IP V6 The pool priority rule defines an IP V6 address range using CIDR notation. An IP V6 rule matches if the IP V6 address of the requesting client is inside the subnet as defined in the rule.

FQDN The pool priority rule defines a left- or right-truncated domain name. A FQDN rule matches if the host name of the requesting client matches the domain name pattern of the rule.

Page 46: Interplay | MAM Essence Management Administrator User's Guideresources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/Interplay... · 4 If you have questions, ask. "Derived works" includes all pr ograms

Configuring Rules for Selecting the Optimal Pool Access

46

- If there is at least one rule of type FQDN defined, the Essence Manager performs a reverse lookup of the client's IP address.

4. The pool with the highest priority is considered to be the optimal pool. The EssenceManager selects the pool with the highest priority and returns an appropriate access path to the client.

If there are multiple pools with the same priority, one of them is selected in a random manner.

Constraints

When configuring pool priority rules the following constrains should be considered:

• Access to essence pools is also affected by available access protocols and access permissions

• The reverse lookup of IP addresses may require an appropriate configuration of the DNS

• The reverse lookup of IP addresses is only performed if at least one pool priority rule of type FQDN is present. This way penalties from the DNS lookups are minimized.

• The type of the IP address that is received in the request might depend on the network and other settings. There is no automatic translation between IP V4 and IP V6 addresses and vice versa.

• If a network supports both IP V4 and IP V6 addresses, the same rules must be configured for IP V4 and IP V6, otherwise the result may be unexpected.

Sample Pool Priorities

Example: An essence file is located on three different essence pools, Pool 1, Pool 2, and Pool 3.

Pool Priority rules

Pool 1 (Online) • IP V4 Rule 1: Subnet 192.168.0.0/16 is assigned a priority of 500

• IP V4 Rule 2: Subnet 192.169.0.0/16 is assigned a priority 50

Pool 2 (Online) • IP V4 Rule 1: Subnet 192.169.0.0/16 is assigned a priority of 500

• IP V4 Rule 2: Subnet 192.168.0.0/16 is assigned a priority 50

Pool 3 (Near Online) • No rule defined

Disabling the File Download in MAM Desktop’s Essence View

47

Case 1

A client with the IP address 192.168.10.219 requests access to the essence file. The Essence Manager calculates the following priorities for the pools:

• Pool 1: 1000 (Default priority boost for an online pool) + 500 (Rule 1 matches) = 1500

• Pool 2: 1000 (Default priority boost for an online pool) = 1000

• Pool 3: 0 (Default priority boost for a near-online pool) = 0

Effectively the Essence Manager now selects Pool 1 because it possesses the highest priority value and directs the client to this pool by returning the appropriate access path.

Case 2

A client with the IP address 192.169.10.157 requests access to the essence file. The Essence Manager calculates the following priorities for the pools:

• Pool 1: 1000 (Default priority boost for an online pool) = 1000

• Pool 2: 1000 (Default priority boost for an online pool) + 500 (Rule 1 matches) = 1500

• Pool 3: 0 (Default priority boost for a near-online pool) = 0

Effectively the Essence Manager now selects Pool 2 because it possesses the highest priority value and directs the client to this pool by returning the appropriate access path.

Case 3

A client with the IP address 192.240.16.10 requests access to the essence file. The Essence Manager calculates the following priorities for the pools:

• Pool 1: 1000 (Default priority boost for an online pool) = 1000

• Pool 2: 1000 (Default priority boost for an online pool) = 1000

• Pool 3: 0 (Default priority boost for a near-online pool) = 0

The two pools Pool 1 and Pool 2 possess the same highest priority. In this case both pools are equal candidates for access. The Essence Manager selects one of them randomly and directs the client to this pool by returning the appropriate access path.

Disabling the File Download in MAM Desktop’s Essence View

The right to download essences is controlled by a separate User Management right (category Import/Export > Allow_Download). If a user is member of a group that has this right granted, they can download essence packages and essences from MAM Desktop’s Essence view. If you

48

remove the right from the user group, the entire column that contains the download buttons in MAM Desktop’s Essence view is hidden. Since this is a global MAM right, you can only enable or disable the entire download feature.

If you want to configure a specific restriction on the download feature, you can remove HTTP Access for the respective pool, hiding that essence's download button in the Essence view.

Example: You want to prevent MXF files from being downloaded but allow the download of browse proxies and keyframes.

To disable the file download:

1. Open the Essence Server view.

2. Select “(all)” in the Show list of the Pools pane to display all pools.

3. Select the desired pool in the Pools pane.

4. Click Access in the Pools pane.

The Pool Access dialog opens. It shows all created pool access types and provides controls to create and edit pool access.

6. Click OK.

The security prompt is closed. The pool access is deleted.

7. Click Cancel to close the Pool Access dialog.

To check if the download is disabled:

1. Open MAM Desktop.

2. Search for a video that contains an MXF essence.

3. Open the Essence view for the video.

4. Check if the Open / Save button is hidden for the MXF essence.
