First and foremost, I would like to express my utmost gratitude to Ar. Loi Chai Peng
for allowing me to conduct my internship at CP Loi Architect firm besides guiding me
throughout these 10 weeks to familiarize myself with the working environment. I have also
been able to understand the role of an architect better not just in designing but also in terms of
running an office and dealing with client.
Moreover, I would like to thank all of my friendly colleagues in the firm who were
helpful and guided me whenever I had a doubt or faced difficulties.
Last but not least, I would like to thank Mr. Angus Lee Ching Hua for taking the
initiative to visit my office during the working hour and ensured that I’m in the right track to
learn from the professionals.
All in all, it has been a valuable experience given the fact that I was able to exposed
myself in an architecture firm and catch a glimpse of the construction industry.

04 | Report
Based on my 10 weeks of internship in CP Loi Architect firm, I have realized that the
firm has a variety of project ranging from interior renovation, residential housing to
apartments. I had been working under Ar. Loi for most of the time and he guided me
constantly by giving his suggestions and comments (mostly in terms of practicality) based on
my ideas and design and I learned a lot from his comments. Besides, I was grateful to be able
to participate in part of the drawings submission process by annotating the fire hydrant, fire
door and party wall for fire safety inspection, compiling drawings and submission of
drawings to the authority. I had also been to project site and site meeting from time to time to
understand the role of an architect better.
Ar. Loi briefed me on the building by law before giving me the task to produce a roof
and window design for a single storey bungalow. Throughout this project I have learned that
the site analysis must be done as an overall instead of a single unit and be cautious when
there is an interception of two roofs meeting at one point during the designing process. Pitch
roof design is more suitable in Malaysia’s weather and preferably metal roofing although it is
not aesthetically pleasing as concrete requires high maintenance.
On the fourth week, I was asked to propose a guard house that gives a sense of
welcome, provides shelter and monitor area for the guard in charged. Although there isn’t any
building by law to follow, the floor to window height of the guard house must be within 450-
600mm in order for the car windows to be in the same level upon reaching. The challenge
was to provide shelter for entry on both sides of the road and at the same time covering up the
water tank above. One mistake that I did was to place the rainwater down pipe too close to
the column which may affects the foundation of the whole structure.

The next task which is designing fence and gate for residential units allowed me to
recognize the materials use for a general house gate and the name or short form used in the
working drawing such as MS-mild steel, RHS- rectangular hollow section and etc. Moreover,
cost is one of the factor to be consider during the designing process thus limiting the
difference of material really helps a lot.
On week six, I was working on locating and design signage in a 23 floors apartment. I
started off by understanding the types of signage in an apartment, then moved on to
determine signage content and direction after understanding the floor plans. I also learned to
use proper symbol and short form to locate the location of signage in the drawings. In order
to do that, I had to imagine myself as a visitor in the building and locate signage in each floor
which will prevent myself from lost or confusion and repeat the whole process again and this
time as one of the owner of the apartment again. Indirectly, I also understood the building
program and requirement of an apartment.
On week nine, I was given the task to design a main entrance statement for Taman
Anjung Gapam. One of the important aspect is that it must be of low maintenance,
recognizable, sense of welcoming and relate to the house design. As the concept for the
housing scheme is of Tudor style home with steeply pitched gable roofs, decorative elements
at attic and extensive use of stone elements, I tried to incorporate those elements into my
design with the intention of visitor able to imagine how the houses in the housing scheme will
looks like even before entering it. I also noticed that the placement of the MES is vital as it
will be useless if it couldn’t be seen upon reaching.
The last project that I was given to handle is to propose the material for the lobby
façade of a condominium who is currently undergoing construction. The challenge that I
faced was that the wall was simply too empty as it is of double volume so molding is

incorporated into the wall design. To secure the lounge privacy, the partition is designed in
such a way that eye level are blocked with wooden plank while natural ventilation are still
allowed to occur at all time. Spray paint is also used to add texture to the façade thus making
it aesthetically pleasing.
In my opinion, I think that the working life of an architect is very much different from
what is taught and done in the academic level. In the academic level, we spent more time in
proposing a building with identity and concept while in practical, most of the time were spent
on making the design work, low maintenance, functionality and of course less costly. I’m
also aware that I must improve myself in terms of playing with the material, molding and
texture to gives the effect of what a client asks for within minimal budget. Lastly, I would say
that this internship training has made me gain knowledge that will never be taught
academically and prepare myself better for the future even before graduation.
