TAKING ADVANTAGES OF DELAYED PROJECTTO MAKE A PLACE FOR STREET ART

16INTERNSHIP PORTFOLIO

“Street Art” has been introduced in Vietnam since the early of 90s. Firstly known as “Hiphop-culture” and has been spread through “Hiphop dancing”, “Rap”,... After nearly 3 decades, It has been strongly developed and insprired most of young people with various forms.Even though, after many visitting, interviews and surveys, we reallized that there’re not many places for this kind of sport that support standard structures and players don’t have enough space for their activities. That’s why they play in the parks, on the sidewalks or even on the streets, which is not allowed and dangerous for both pedestrians and players. And during the research, we also learnt that most of “Street Art” players’s awareness is still low, sometimes, they take a risk just to satisfy their fun.

At the same time we researched, Vietnam was in the economic crisis. Property market was freezed for several years. Many projects were delayed. Most of constructions stopped and was left vacant for years or even till the present. Property inventory untill 2015 is still about thoundsands billion vnd. A fortune of residents was wasted for nothing and leaded to many social arguments. And we came up with an idea, why didn’t we combine 2 problems and find a solution: Using the vacant spaces of delayed project to make a playground complex for “Street Art” community.

We chose a under-construction building for our first prototype. It’s the administrative building of Hochiminh open university, which had been left vacant for more than 2 years before continued constructing.

The building consists of 2 basement and 8 floors. Most of the building has been finished the concreting part, there were only floors, stair case, elevator core, columns, beams, and no surrounding wall. The area each floor is 252 sqm and about 2,5-4,5m height, so our mission is to renovate this building into a “Street art” complex includes playgrounds for “street-sport”, community spaces, performing spaces with a stage, and also a coffee shop. Because every delayed projects will continue constructing sooner or later, so we think of using portable and modular structures that can be transfered to another delayed project when we run out of time. With this solution, we can remains the playgrounds for players and spread this model over the city, to any places that are wasted.

Through this project, we look forward to creating more places for “Street Art”, helping it more popular and giving the others a better look about this. Also we want to build a strong and useful community and raise awareness of the players about their safety.

ABOUT In this project, we will be working in Phu Xuan Commune of eastern Nha Be district in Ho Chi Minh City. We attempt to address the urgent issues in Phu Xuan by developing sustainable solutions with the community, for the community. Through this project, we are also trying to determine the effectiveness of the PAR approach in benefitting Less Developed Countries. This will be done through evaluating the social, economic and political benefits our project could potentially bring about.

The researching phase took a long time from Jan 2014 to Jan 2015. So in May 2015, we held a design workshop for the residents of Phu Xuan for a Community Park that we build at a vacant lot in the area. We gathered the residents’s input for the design to develope it and raise fund, supports for the project. The building phase started in September and we have completed the 1st part of the park, the landscape part was done by the end of October.

THE PAR APPROACHParticipatory Action Research (PAR) is an approach combining research, education and action used to gather information to inform decisions made concerning social or environmental issues (Durham, 2010).

In PAR, researchers work closely with the target audience, members of the target community, and tap on a variety of skillsets to engage with people and draw insights from the process. The subjects themselves are empowered to become co-researchers, contribute data and ideas, and have significant influence over the outcomes of the research process (Babbie.E, 2012). In this process of engagement and problem solving between researchers and the communities, a deeper understanding of issues is achieved, possibly leading to a more effective outcome.

Listening and comprehension is one of the most important points of this project. Only through these workshops, you know what the residents really need, not what you want to build. And when the residents involved in design process, they gave us the input and insight that we could’t think of before. They’re not the only one that need our help but we also need to learn from them.

To have a beautiful design is hard. And we learnt that to have a beautiful design that is made by its users who have non experience in art and design is even harder. The collaborating design process between our team and residents had to take 3 months, through many community meeting, getting feedbacks on many options that are not suitable. Finally we come up with final option at the end of August, just in time for the construction preparation.

My ultimate project manager said: “One of the true value of architecture is it has to be fixed with the context. And no one else can understand the context better than the people that living there.”

We designed it together, now we had a chance to build it together. Most of the construction work was done by our teamates and the residents. They’re the main power and the spirit of this project.

For the first time in our student life, we have to stayed under hot sun at noon and worked as a labor, from digging deep holes to building a bamboo monkey bridge, in several week. Taking effort to make a better place for Phu Xuan commune and to make their hope comes true.
