Choices, choices The challenge of choosing a major
It’s one of the biggest decisions you will make during your college years, and it is a
decision that will help shape your future. The decision of choosing a major can be
a daunting one, but there is help. Career Services is a great place to start!
Focus 2: This online assessment gives you career and major suggestions
based on your answers to questions pertaining to your interests, values, skills, and
personality. It’s not as definitive as Hogwarts’ Sorting Hat, but it is a great way to
get ideas for potential majors and careers.
Career Advisors: We are here to help you think about your options. Set up
an appointment to discuss your Focus 2 results and look at other resources.
CEP 101: This career development course is a 10-week, 2-credit hour class
that takes an in-depth look at who you are and what majors and careers could be
a good fit for you. This class is a good option for those who are still undecided
after taking Focus 2 and meeting with a career advisor.
Other tips: Try to take a 100- or 200-level course in the major you are
considering. Talk to students you know about their majors. Discuss a major you
are considering with an academic advisor. Attend the Major/Minor Fair to speak to
representatives from campus departments and learn more about their majors.

Lessons of an intern A Student Perspective
by Monica Murphy, Student Marketing/Communication Assistant
“What’s the point of an internship? It’s just like a job; I can find one of those anywhere.” Are those the thoughts you have when thinking about internships? Yeah, that’s what I thought about them, too. That is, until I experienced my first one. I am going to share with you, from a student’s perspective, why internships are so important. For me, being a marketing major means there is a very broad field of what could potentially be a career. My options include, Sales, Product Marketing, Marketing Specialist, Marketing Research, Advertising, Marketing Communications, and the list goes on and on. So, with potentially 50 options of where I could go in a career, how was I supposed to narrow them down to roughly three or four options, and then down to one? The answer is simple: INTERNSHIPS. Why are Internships so important? These opportunities help set the foundation for your career. You will learn what to expect in terms of working in the “real world.” You will learn what you like and dislike almost immediately, which will help
you narrow down your career choices. It is more than “just a job;” it is experience. Employers are looking to hire
students who already have experience in their field of study. So, here I am three internships later, knowing that my goal/career path is to be a Marketing Communications Manager. When are you going to start narrowing down your career options?
