Interns Begin Service at Christian Youth Center

Praise God! Kentucky Mountain Mission interns, Edward and Kimberly Bowers and Tim Estes, have moved to Clay County and the doors of the Christian Youth Center are open for ministry! While the church basketball league is the biggest outreach of the CYC, a gymnasium, two bowling lanes and a fitness room also provide opportunity to build relationships and share Christ with the community. In their first month, Edward, Kimberly and Tim began open gym nights and the men’s church basketball league, with plans to begin youth and family ministries in the near future. With the encouragement and cooperation of area churches, we hope to see greater interest and participation in CYC activities — and to see lives changed for Christ!

In the prior absence of full time KMM staff members, we have appreciated friends in Clay County who took care of the building, CYC rentals and operation of the ball leagues. We give special thanks to them for faithfulness.

Thank you for your continued prayers for the staff and ministry of the Christian Youth Center. Dawn Owens

The Crusaders are finishing up another whirlwind season, traveling to schools throughout southeast Kentucky. This semester, the team is made up of Preacher Bill Holeman, Debbie Patton, Rose Harrison, Liz Kegg and Sam Judd. The Crusaders greatly enjoy catching up with campers in their schools and meeting new students who are potential campers.

The program theme for this round of programs is, “You are Special.” Students are told that they are special to God because He made them. They are so special to Him that even though they have sinned, He came to remake them (2 Corinthians 5:17). He loves them that much. In fact, He loves them so much that He has written to them in the Bible. They can come to Him just as they are. No matter what they have done, God can take away their sin. They are truly special to Him! Sam Judd, KMM Intern

In my fund raising and recruitment travel to churches and schools this year, I have met people experiencing various economic setbacks in their lives, including reduced income, loss of jobs, homes, etc. Listening to their stories, I have also heard how God has worked to meet the needs in His children’s lives.

As a faith mission, the operation of KMM is dependent upon the gifts of God’s people. We praise Him for the way He has always met the needs of this ministry and we thank you for your faithful giving during these difficult economic times. Your generosity makes each outreach possible, including the rural churches, camp program, school ministries, community centers, teacher training, counseling programs and jail ministries. Your support of our mission staff is greatly appreciated, as well. As you pray and give, the gospel is proclaimed and lives continue to be changed for the glory of God!

In the days and months ahead, we ask you to pray with us for God’s continued provision. Colder weather means higher electric and propane bills. There is also the completion of the new office which includes work on the basement, driveway and retaining wall — along with other unfinished jobs on the campgrounds. Additional projects are on our list, but until we complete what has already begun, we cannot proceed with new work.

Finally, I would ask you to pray for the support needs of our KMM staff members. Due to the increased cost of living, the Board of Directors raised the required support levels of our missionaries by eight percent. Now each couple must have a monthly minimum of $2,600 (each additional child, 0-12 years of age, $270; each child 13 and up, $375), and single workers must have at least $1,725.

God has always been faithful to meet the needs of KMM and we know that He will continue to do so. Thank you for praying with us, for your generous support and for being a co-laborer with us. William Owens, KMM Director

I have always been amazed at the way Jesus chose to set up His earthly ministry. Who would choose to entrust it all to such a group of men as He did? He took ordinary, everyday people (some even considered “outcasts”) who were simply willing to be used by God. Sold out to Him, they spread the gospel message throughout the world!

Just as amazing, God still chooses to work in the same way. We see that on a regular basis here at Kentucky Mountain Mission. Sometimes He sends groups — other times, individuals. Twice a year, groups from Virginia and Michigan donate their time and talents for the Youth Haven Dental Clinics. While some are dentists and hygienists, others come as support staff, willing to do whatever is needed. Recently, a doctor and other health care workers came for a weekend to start a Medical Clinic. We are praying for others to join them so that this ministry will continue to grow. Some groups come to share their carpentry skills and the Lord has used them to help us with building projects, saving much in labor costs. Still others have come to do work at the Lee County Rec Center, Clay County Christian Youth Center or in the community.

One of the ways that God uses individuals is in the summer camp ministry at Youth Haven Bible Camp. College-age counselors play a vital role in the success of the camp season. Every summer, we try to recruit at least five young men and five young women, along with all of the other teens and adults needed to help with kitchen, maintenance, cleaning and recreational responsibilities. Extra help is needed during the Sunshine Camps, as those with mental and physical disabilities often require one on one care.

Perhaps you are one of those ordinary people who thought you had to have a dynamic personality or great skill to be used of the Lord. Surrender whatever talent and ability you have to God and be prepared to be amazed at what He accomplishes! We would love to make the ministries of KMM available to you. You may contact our office at 606-464-2445 or e-mail us at [email protected]. You’ll find ordinary, sold out people waiting to serve along with you. Scott Brandenburg

With the pressures we face, many of us find ourselves trying to survive life and all that it throws our way in our own power. As we try to survive on our own, more often than not, we find ourselves failing miserably. This is the exact issue we are dealing with in our weekly Fellowship of Christian Athlete huddles in the Lee County High School and Middle School, as we dive into our yearly theme, Unleash the Power! Students are being encouraged with the message that it is only through unleashing the power of God in our lives that we are able to have success and reach our family and friends with the gospel. Some of the sub-points of Unleashing the Power include living lives of integrity, having servant hearts, team work and many more topics.

Our students have been giving us positive feedback and we are excited that the number of participants has increased since last year. Our middle school huddles have grown from three students to over 30 students each week. There are about ten students attending the weekly high school huddle — and the high school invited us to lead two FCA club hours on their monthly club days. During the club days, we meet with over 40 students. Many of these students do not attend church, so this is an awesome opportunity to present them with the gospel. We have truly seen God unleashing His power in the lives of the local high school students this year and we ask you to pray that many more students will make Him Lord of their lives. Andy Owens

On October 16, we unexpectedly lost our dear friend and co-worker, Agnes Terry. Aggie had been very active in ministry with KMM over the years, most r e c e n t l y a s t h e bookkeeper, but in many other roles, as well. She was also active in service at the Idamay Bible C h u r c h , h a v i n g

worked with the “Jet Cadets” and other age groups along with her husband, Bob. Although Aggie and Bob never had children of their own, they had many nieces and nephews — and many more “adopted” children and grandchildren. I was always amazed at Aggie’s memory, as she remembered names and details about so many children and young people that she had such an impact on at camp, at church and in the community. This impact was evidenced by the over 1,200 people who attended her viewing. Aggie was a great prayer warrior and always had a list of relatives, friends and friends of friends that she prayed for regularly. She suffered for many years with rheumatoid arthritis, and recently with other health issues. Although we were saddened by her loss, we are all rejoicing that she is now in the presence of the Lord that she loved and so faithfully served. Please continue to pray for the family, especially her husband Bob, one of our KMM Board members. Steve Smith
