You can communicate and share information in a variety of ways MySpace and Facebook Blogging and online chat sites Email and Instant Messaging

Things you say online hurt just as much as in person Project a good image Do not share passwords with anyone Be careful with pictures and videos
Do not give information that makes you easy to track down Balance your online life with in-person relationships and
activities Make careful choices about what you share
Once you post words, photos, and videos online, they are out of your control
Broken Friendship
Be Cautious of Online Predators Lurking in chat rooms, social
networking sites, and IM Think of you as prey Get you to trust them Tell you to keep them a secret Try to trick you into meeting
them All they want to do is hurt you
Online Predators: What you can do Make sure your screen name doesn’t say too much
about you Keep Personally Identifiable Information private
Name, school, address, age, birthday, phone number Do not share anything that would help them find you
School name, mascot, places you go Chat with people you know in the real world Talk to an adult when someone threatens you or asks
for too much information
Cyber Bullying Is a new trend developing Can be very hateful, mean, disrespectful, and
intimidating Can happen in IM, email, blogging, websites,
and while online gaming
Cyber Bullying If someone is harassing you online
Tell a trusted adult Block them Ignore them,
Do not open their messages and do not respond
Save their messages in case they become a more serious threat
If it is school related, tell your teacher or an administrator If you are threatened with harm, call the police

Steal your name, Social Security Number, birthdate, account numbers, passwords, credit card numbers
Can open credit accounts, purchase and use cell phones, order merchandise, take out home loans
Costing you time, money and embarassment Can take years to clear up
One Method of Online Fraud Phishing
Email offers that sound too good to be true You have won some money or a prize
Asks you for private information, such as Social Security number or bank account number
You are asked for money up front There is a sense of urgency The sender repeatedly asks for confidentiality
Protect yourself Use a phishing filter Do not share personal information Use secure passwords
At least 8 characters Mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols Not easily guessed
Shop only on secure sites (https://) Be careful with wireless networks Do not use public computers for online purchases or banking Log off public computers completely
