RIR System

• The Regional Internet Registry (RIR) System began in 1992

• There are five RIRs today

• The RIRs coordinate closely with the IANA

• The RIRs are not-for-profit organizations

• Policy proposals to change IPv4 distribution policies in all regions

IPv4 Depletion

• The total IPv4 addresses pool add a total aprox 4,300 millions of addresses.

• This space is regionally divided and administrated into 256 parts also known as /8.

• Each part is made of by aprox. 16,700,000 addresses.

Predictions

• Based on the current evolution of the IPv4 addresses consumption rate, by the mid 2010 the central pool of version 4 (IPv4) Internet addresses could be completely depleted.

• Based on the same suppositions, the pool administrated by the RIRs could be depleted in 2011/12.

TheCaribbean

Actions to take • Boost the IPv6 deployment

– Facilitate policy discussion– Waiver fees– Training and Workshops– Awareness Campaings

• Recovery of the non used space. – (i.e. ERX – 7 /8s)

• Analyzing the actions in order to minimize possible negative impacts.

TheCaribbean

TheCaribbean

• Governments– Coordination with the industry– Help promotion– Adopt IPv6 officially in state networking.

• Private Sector– Upgrade equipment and OS– Deploy IPv6 in their networks– Invest in training

What Others are doing

TheCaribbean

TheCaribbean

• The access to IPv6 space is not a problem

• The challenge is training, promotions and adoption of new technologies.
