The Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is one of the core protocols of the Internet Protocol Suite. It is chiefly used by the operating systems of networked computers to send error messages indicating, for example, that a requested service is not available or that a host or router could not be reached

Time to live (TTL) is a mechanism that limits the lifespan of data in a computer or network.

The TTL field is set by the sender of the datagram, and reduced by every router on the route to its destination. If the TTL field reaches zero before the datagram arrives at its destination,

then the datagram is discarded and an ICMP error datagram is sent back to the sender. The purpose of the TTL field is to avoid a situation in which an undeliverable datagram

keeps circulating on an Internet system, and such a system eventually becoming swamped by such "immortals"
