Teaching tool: Computer model of glomerular filtration rate

This announcement is a notice for a computer simulation fordetermining the single nephron glomerular filtration rate(SNGFR). Eight independent variables are used within themodel: afferent resistance, efferent resistance, mean arterialpressure transmitted to the renal arteriole, serum protein con-centration, hematocnt, hydraulic permeability of the glomeru-lar basement membrane, pressure in Bowan's space, and pres-sure within the peritubular capillary.

Two graphic formats are available. With the first, variablesare set to user defined specific values, and a graph of the oncoticpressure, net hydrostatic pressure, and ultrafiltration versus anormalized length of glomerular capillary is generated. Thisoutput is useful for examining the magnitude of the instanta-neous net driving force for ultrafiltration and for demonstratingif or when filtration equilibrium is achieved. The second formatgenerates a three-dimensional topographic map of any twovariables versus glomerular filtration rate, glomerular bloodflow, or glomerular pressure. For example, afferent resistanceversus efferent resistance versus the resultant single nephronGFR with all other variables fixed. Three axes require that themap be drawn within a cube, which then can be rotated in spaceto maximize ease of interrogation. All generated data are savedas files. File handling is done within the program and also ismenu selectable. System requirements include 256K ram, EGA,and 8087 or 80287 math coprocessor.

This product is available at no cost to institutions as ateaching tool for students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows. Please write to Robert Bernard, M.D., The University of TexasHealth Science Center at Houston, Division of Nephrology,P.O. Box 20708, Houston, Texas 77025, USA.
