The International Year of Family Farming was launched on the 22nd November at UN Headquarters in New York. What is Family Farming? Family farming includes all family-based agricultural activities, and it is linked to several areas of the rural development. Family farming is a means of organizing agricultural, forestry, fisheries, pastoral and aquaculture production which is managed and operated by a family and predominantly reliant on family labour, including both women’s and men’s. Objectives of the International Year include supporting the development of policies conducive to sustainable family farming and increasing knowledge, communication and public awareness.TRANSCRIPT

Why is family farming important? Family farming has an important socio-‐economic, environmental and cultural role.
• Family and small-‐scale farming are inextricably linked to world food security.
• Family farming preserves tradi6onal food products, while contribuCng to a balanced diet and safeguarding the world’s agro-‐biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.
• Family farming represents an opportunity to boost local economies, especially when combined with specific policies aimed at social protecCon and well-‐being of communiCes.

Objectives of the International Year • Support the development of policies conducive to sustainable family farming;

• Increase knowledge, communicaCon and public awareness;
• AKain beKer understanding of family farming needs, potenCal and constraints and ensure technical support;
• Create synergies for sustainability.
What activities will be carried out?

The IYFF will focus on three global lines of ac2on:
1. PromoCon of dialogue in policy decision-‐making processes
2. IdenCficaCon, documentaCon and sharing lessons learned and successful experiences of exisCng pro-‐family farming policies at naConal and/or other levels to capitalize relevant knowledge on family farming
3. CommunicaCon, advocacy and outreach

• Family Farming is the predominant form of agriculture both in developed and developing countries
• Family farmers are an important part of the soluCon for a world free from poverty and hunger
• Family Farming supports sustainable development
