HE SECOND EDITION of theInternational Water Summit (IWS),which has been taking place atAbu Dhabi National Exhibition

Centre this week, has witnessed anincrease in visitor numbers with feedbackfrom key exhibitors and conferenceparticipants overwhelmingly positive.

Ahead of the final day of the exhibition,Ara Fernezian, Divisional ManagingDirector - UAE for Reed Exhibitions,organisers of IWS, WFES and EcoWASTE,said, “The quality of the visitors and thequality of the contacts that have beenmade at IWS this year has been strong,and the number of attendees hasincreased on the successful inauguralevent last year.”

New features at the exhibition this yearhave included the Business MatchmakingProgram, which has led to a raft of newbusiness partnerships, while seats were ata premium at the IWS Conference thanksto the high quality of the programme andspeaker line up.

“IWS has become a relevant launch

platform for strategic initiatives that willaddress local challenges and unleashinvestments – especially with the launchof the 2014-2018 Water ResourcesManagement Strategy for Abu Dhabi,”Fernezian added.

RASMUS HELVEG PETERSEN, the DanishMinister for Development Cooperation,paid a visit to IWS yesterday and stoppedby Best Water Technology’s (BWT) standto find out more about the company’sbusiness interests in the Middle East.

The Danish delegation’s visit to theUAE follows an agreement between thetwo countries to exchange knowledge onenvironmental issues.

BWT CEO Henrik Forslund said thecompany, which has carried out businessin the region for the past 20 years, was“lucky to have all of this attention”.Forslund added that the firm currentlyreceives all the support required from theDanish government, adding thatDenmark was able to offer markets across

the globe a host of environmentally-friendly solutions in terms of technologyand machinery.

BWT, which has been looking forpotential partners in the region, is able tohelp solve issues associated with brinedischarge from desalination plants.

“People in this region are concernedabout environmental issues in this area,because of the number of desalinationplants and the brine they discharge,”Forslund explained. “It is a very big issuein this region and there is no easysolution, because of the physics involved,but we have some solutions that webelieve could help.

“There’s a lot of potential here at IWS.There have been some very seriouspotential clients coming to our stand, aswell as a lot of end users. We are focusingon the whole region, and we have met

visitors from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait andDubai, as well as from other parts of theMiddle East and Africa,” he added.

Danish minister pays visit to IWS exhibitor

CLEAN ENERGY BUSINESS Council (CEBC) PlanningManager Alice Cowman has called for the region’s waterindustry to take a lead in the push to develop asustainable energy mix.

Since its formation in 2010, the council has beenpromoting the utilisation of clean energy across theMiddle East and has recently produced its first researchpaper on issues relating to water.

Cowman, who moved to the region eight months ago,said that one of the first things the organisation found onits paper on water opportunities and challenges in the

MENA region was how closely energy policy was linked to water policy.“I’ve worked in West Africa, Ireland, the UK and Europe, and energy is more linked with water

here. Water is linked with energy, not only because of the need for energy for desalinationpurposes, but because the region is extremely water stressed,” Cowman noted.

“Clean energy has been talked about for a long time and it has only really taken off in the lastcouple of years. But I think the push has got to come from the water side and not from theenergy side, and that's one of the reasons we looked at water for our first research paper."

Cowman said that she felt people across the Middle East were aware of issues relating to waterusage, but that a lack of education was proving to be a barrier to addressing the problem.

“At the government level it is starting to be addressed - particularly on the agricultural side,where so much water is used,” she stated. “The interesting thing we found when we looked atthis sector was that 80 per cent of the water in the Middle East is used for agriculture, but it onlycontributes two per cent of GDP. Damage to water resources is actually costing more than twoper cent of GDP every year.”

THE TOTAL GLOBAL onlinedesalination capacity now exceeds80 million cubic metres per day(m3/d), according to the

International Desalination Association (IDA). Data from IDA and GWI DesalData shows

that the amount of new desalination capacitythat was expected to come online during2013 represented 50 per cent more than lastyear’s total. Desalination plants with a totalcapacity of six million m3/d were scheduledto come online during 2013, compared withfour million m3/d in 2012.

The data also shows that there are 17,277commissioned desalination plants in theworld. Desalination is practiced in 150countries, providing some or all of the dailywater needs of more than 300 million people.

Plants in the Middle East account fornearly half the global production, with SaudiArabia and the UAE topping the listaccording to capacity.

While overall growth in 2013 slowedsomewhat, the data shows that demand fordesalination nevertheless continues to rise.An increasing proportion of that growth iscoming from the industrial sector. Since2010, 45 per cent of new desalination plants

have been ordered by industrial users suchas power stations and refineries, while in thefour years prior to that no more than 27 percent of new capacity was ordered byindustrial water users.

Industrial applications for desalinationgrew to 7.6 million m3/d for 2010-2013compared with 5.9 million m3/d for 2006-2009. Of the 7.6 million m3/d, the powerindustry accounted for 16 per cent; oil & gas,12 per cent (up from seven per cent from2006-2009); mining & metals, 11 per cent;refining & chemicals, 11 per cent; electronics,five per cent; and food & beverage, three percent. Other industrial applications accountedfor the remaining 40 per cent.

“You could see this as the water-energynexus in action,” said Christopher Gasson,Publisher of GWI DesalData.

“The energy industry needs water, both inrefining and power generation as well asupstream. The water industry also needsenergy, and the two seem to be comingtogether in increased demand fordesalination. Fortunately the desalinationindustry has been improving its energyefficiency all along.

“Over the past decade, we have seen a 30per cent improvement in the energy

efficiency of the best performing plants, and Ithink we will see a similar improvement overthe next decade,” he added.

Seawater desalination continues torepresent the largest percentage of onlineglobal capacity at 59 per cent, followed bybrackish water at 22 per cent, river water atnine per cent, and wastewater and purewater at five per cent each.

The markets that are expected to see thefastest growth in desalination over the nextfive years are South Africa, Jordan, Mexico,Libya, Chile, India and China, all of which areexpected to more than double theirdesalination capacity.

IDA Secretary General Patricia A. Burkeremarked, “Ongoing enhancements inenergy efficiency continue to be a key focusfor the desalination industry.

“While we have made significantimprovements in the past couple of decades,we continue to seek additional ways toreduce energy requirements throughdevelopment of new technologies,implementation of best practices and/orretrofits in existing plants, increased use ofhybrid technologies, and efforts to harnessthe potential of renewable energy to powerdesalination plants.”

Syrinix receives CEcertification forpipeline solutionStand no: 3131 – UK Pavilion

PIPELINE TECHNOLOGY COMPANY Syrinix,exhibiting on the UK Pavilion at IWS,develops and provides automated pipelinemonitoring technologies for water utilities.

The company's TransientMinder solutionfocuses on the detection and identificationof pressure transients within a network ofpipes and recently received CE certification.

The technology provides clients withthe ability to understand the impact onpipelines of various operational activities,with CE approval confirming thatTransientMinder meets all the appropriateprovisions of the relevant Europeandirectives and enabling the product to be supplied throughout the Europeanmarket place.

Mike Bracher, Operations Director atSyrinix, said, “This is fantastic news forSyrinix and demonstrates our commitmentto providing high quality, innovativesystems to the utility market sector, bothnationally and internationally. The CEcertification allows TransientMinder tomove into full-scale production for theEuropean market in line with our ambitiousexpansion plans.”

TransientMinder also provides clientswith the ability to understand the impacton pipelines of various operationalactivities such as valve closures, which areoften the cause of damaging transients.

In September 2013 the company wasinvited to join a European consortium todesign the drinking water supply networkof the future.

The project, SmartWater4Europe, isbeing led by Dutch water utility Vitens andis working towards creating a strongbusiness case for smart water supplynetworks across Europe.

On the invitation to join the network,Syrinix CTO Dr Paul Linford said, “To bepart of something that could future-proofthe water supply in Europe is a greatopportunity and we are looking forward toworking with the consortium.”

METITO HAS BEEN awarded a US$25mncontract to provide water and wastewatersolutions for an upcoming 650 MW thermalpower plant in Suez, Egypt.

The company will install water andwastewater treatment systems at the plantto help produce demineralised water usedfor operating high-pressure boilers,condensate polishing, units forhypochlorite generation and in chemicalinjection systems. It will also establish awastewater treatment plant and a water/oilseparation system at the project site.

Metito Africa Managing Director KarimMadwar said, “We are very proud to bepart of Egypt's new development plan byimplementing this significant project. Wewill introduce the Ultra Filtrationtechnology in Egypt, which will improvethe quality of treated water in other sites,including Damitta, Banha and North Giza.”

DUTCH EXHIBITOR DELTARES has been onhand at IWS to offer advice and informationon its wide range of smart water solutions,innovations and applications.

The independent institute for appliedresearch in the field of water, subsurface andinfrastructure, places its core focus on deltas,coastal regions and river basins, workingclosely with governments, businesses andother research institutes and universities toassist in the management of denselypopulated and vulnerable areas.

The research institute, whose motto is"Enabling Delta Life", employs more than800 people and operates an open sourcepolicy by making its software and modelsfreely available.

The institute recently signed an MoU withfour Kenyan institutes – the Kenya WaterTowers Agency, the Ramogi Institute ofAdvanced Technology, the Greening KenyaInitiative Trust and the African Collaborative

Centre for Earth System Science – with who itwill share expertises within the field of water.

EXHIBITING ITS EXTENSIVE range of pipesand pipe accessories at IWS 2014 will beSaudi Arabian manufacturer Al WasailIndustrial Company.

The company, formed from Al WasselAgricultural Company and Al WasselIrrigation System Factory, operates a plant inBuraydah, the capital of Al-Qassim Province,that covers a freehold area of 225,000square metres.

Al Wasail Industrial Company is among thelargest manufacturers of polyethyleneproducts, such as pipes and related fittings,in the Kingdom. The firm also producesrubber products, drinking water and sewagepipes, and oil and gas pipes and fittings.

Al Wasail Industrial Company producesHDPE pipes in sizes up to 1200 mm indiameter, and its pipes and fittings aremanufactured in accordance with currentEuropean standards, including DIN 8074, ISO4427 and ISO 1167.

The pipes and fittings specialist hasestablished a global marketing network

covering more than 40 countries and hasreceived approval on some of its productsfrom Saudi Aramco. It has 25 branches withinthe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a networkof agents and authorised distributors acrossthe Gulf region.

Over the past three decades, thecompany has aimed to make a significantcontribution towards the development ofmodern agriculture in Saudi Arabia, beingamong the first companies within theKingdom to introduce a number of waterproducts and technology.

The firm has been contracted to carry workout on projects relating to the operation andmaintenance of drinking water supplies andsanitation networks, and it claims to haveplayed a role in introducing solutions such assprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation, therationalisation of water use in farms, andirrigation solutions for gardens and parks. THE FRENCH CONSULTING andengineering company Microhumus isshowcasing its most recent developmentsin water-retention soil technology duringIWS in order to secure more projects in theMiddle East.

Microhumus delivered its first soil rebuildproject for the ADNOC group Fertil in AbuDhabi's Ruwais Industrial Zone in Decemberlast year. According to the company thiswas the first project of its kind and will cutwater consumption in the treated area by50 per cent.

“IWS represents a great opportunity to highlight our technology and our recentdelivered services in the UAE,” said Mircohumus General Manager Yann Thomas. “Nowthat we have delivered our first project we are very happy that we can show it [topotential clients] and are already in negotiation with other companies.”

After analysing an area Microhumus is able to design and produce a rebuilt soil recipeusing raw materials which reduces water consumption while restoring vegetation.

AES Arabia delivers

plant for GASCO

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PROCESSengineering company AES Arabia hasdelivered a reverse osmosis plant for AbuDhabi gas company GASCO.

The Habshan Sulphur GranulationProject (HSGP) was delivered inDecember 2013 with the aim oftransporting liquid sulphur between theHabshan plants.

Having provided its clients with itsknowledge in designing and installingmembrane treatment systems since itwas founded in 1985, the move marksthe first time AES Arabia has worked withGASCO, according to Asad Iqbal Khan,Manager of International Sales andMarketing at AES Arabia.

Another recent water project thecompany was involved in was the SewageTreatment Plant Membrane BiologicalReactor (STP-MBR) at King AbdullahUniversity of Science and Technology(KAUST) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
