From the President 2012-2014High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major and growing public health problem. This ‘silent killer’ is firmly established in developed countries and is advancing rapidly into emerging economies, such as India, China, and African and Latin American countries.

The ISH is the world’s premier Society dedicated to research into the causes of hypertension and the best treatment for raised blood pressure.

The ISH recognises that to counter the hypertension epidemic it takes the brightest minds, the best research and effective education and implementation. This goal underpins the activities and strategic alliances of the ISH.

Our biennial ISH scientific meetings showcase the leading clinical, population and basic science research and provide a dynamic forum for the leaders and future leaders in the field to discuss challenges and forge collaborations that define the course of blood pressure research.

The ISH supports and encourages new researchers. The establishment of the ISH Research Fellowship (membership) for Graduate Students is a marvellous initiative and future ISH Meetings (as per the Sydney 2012 Meeting) will dedicate specific sessions and new awards for our young stars.

The ISH enjoys a number of strategic relationships of benefit to the Society as a whole and also to individual members.

Such partnerships include those with the World Health Organization, the World Hypertension League, the International Society of Nephrology, The Journal of Hypertension and The Lancet.

The ISH also cherishes its special relationships with the national societies and other organisations that represent blood pressure interests worldwide. These Societies constitute the ISH International Forum.

This truly global network facilitates efforts to ensure that best practice is distilled and disseminated. A special focus is given by the ISH through its Regional Advisory Groups to teaching activities in economically disadvantaged countries in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America.
