Assessment Outlines – Semester Two

Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning and is on‐going at ISS. Assessment

tasks for Semester Two 2018 are contained in this booklet and they are listed by subject. The

tasks are also ordered by week due at the end of the booklet.

Please note the following points:

The weeks are ordered over the entire semester, weeks 1– 19.

Student task sheets should be printed out and given to students, with the relevant marking criteria included. Not all tasks are done at home. Some are done in class or under examination conditions at school. In addition to these major assessment tasks, smaller, formative tasks may be issued in the intervening weeks as well as regular homework. Due dates are approximate and are provided as a guide for when the assessments should take place. Dates may change if unforeseen circumstances prevent them from happening. Submission of assessment items is according to policy outlined in the student diary. Marks for Assessment Items will be posted on PowerSchool Gradebook which parents / guardians can access via the Parent Portal using their password.

Please do not hesitate to contact the teacher concerned or myself for clarification if required.

9Semester content for Coordinated Science Examination 40

Course Outline

In Biology, the semester begins with environmental studies. Students look at the interactions of an organism with its environment, conservation issues and selected cycles (water, carbon and nitrogen). They then engage with climate science and the enhanced green-house effect. Finally, the students revise evolution and inheritance.

In Physics, students begin the semester by looking at the relation between electricity and magnetism, then they move on to radioactive decay and the uses of radioactive isotopes. They compare alpha, beta and gamma radiation. This then leads into discussion of half-life and the dangers of ionising radiation. The semester ends with revision of all topics.

In Chemistry, students begin by looking at the chemistry of water. This is followed by investigation of the manufacture of ammonia and sulfuric acid both which use gases from the air as reactants and then the chemical composition of fertilizers and their effects on plants. Towards the end of the semester, students will study the variety of purification techniques available to chemists. The course is completed by looking at reaction rates and factors affecting the rates of reactions.

Revision will be ongoing in the lead up to both the Mock Examination in Week 7 and the final examinations with IGCSE papers from previous years being used as preparation.
