BIENVENIDOS A LA PLATAFORMA GLOBAL DE SALSA

INTERNATIONAL SALSA MAGAZINE

HELLO FRIENDS, I want to say welcome and thank you for signing up to receive the monthly publication, International Salsa Magazine. Printing has gone through a lot of changes since Johannes Gutenberg first invented the printing press. We believe that digital printing is the wave of the future and we are proud to be riding that futuristic wave. It is so convenient for everyone to get a magazine to you without any delay and at a fraction of what it would normally cost. We try to print articles that may be of interest to musicians, dancers, promoters, and establishments that host Latin music events. We publish articles sent to us by our readers, and correspondents in both English and Spanish. We actively accept correspondents throughout the world. Our correspondents are the link to all the other members about what is happening in their respective areas. At times correspondents attend events and interview artists performing in their areas. They also tell us the hot spots for people to go dancing and special concerts. The magazine also tries to inform on all webpages about salsa. We do not feel that others are our competition, but that they are our brothers in this effort to keep our art alive. There are also a great deal of free music available on line and we try to tell our readers about those stations. This magazine is different from a webpage, because since it is a monthly publication, you know that what you are reading is current events in the salsa world. We hope to make everyone associated with us proud to be a part of International Salsa Magazine. Maria Ferrara, Romina Maraschini, and Alan Taborda all work very hard every month to make this magazine available to you. We hope to get your emails and feed back about how we can improve, bands you know about, if they recorded a CD and want to be reviewed, or if there is an event, or place that you want to tell us about. Let us know and we will be happy to share this information with all our other Salseros. Yours truly, Eduardo Guilarte - Editor

Great Pictures by PETER MAIDEN

June 2010 This is bandleader Johnny Polanco on vibes, with two of his horn men. Polanco, who also plays trombone and guitar, makes his home in the Los Angeles area, and in this instance was visiting San Francisco. The picture was taken in 2000. The club was Jelly’s, on the bay near what is now AT&T Park. I arrived with a friend of Johnny’s, Fé Prather, only to find we were not on the guest list. Johnny came over, and had some words with the door person, who would not budge. Finally he took a twenty-dollar bill and slammed it on the table so Fé and I could get in. I tried to accept graciously, and hoped I would get a picture worthy of Johnny’s gesture. I like this one. The setting sun is streaming through the windows on the right, Johnny’s face and flowered shirt are beautifully lit, and the two band members look very cool, almost like bodyguards. I shot black and white film with my sharpest lens at the time, a 35mm 1.4.

to match their own city festival, so that our salsa parade could be an integrated part of Drammen city festival. Secondly we wil have much warmer weather in June, which will give us the opportunity to use the magnefic location of Union Scene to its full extent. The congress will be held at Union Scene that is cituated alongside the Drammen river. The place is a well know location for salsa concerts and parties. This old warehouse is newly renovated and a a perfect place for a large salsa event. Union Scene has booked Nils Fischer & Timbazo, as a part of Nordic Salsa Experience. So book now and take part in the biggest salsa event in Norway. We will do everything we can to make this a weekend you never will forget. KPFA 94.1 CON SABOR Con Luis Medina

ABOUT ME - Luis Medina Music has been my passion since I was a little kid. I have been fortunate to make my passion a reality and to be on the air broadcasting for over 30 years. I have a concurrent career in entertainment and have worked in other areas of media such as television, publishing and the web. You can listen to my program, Con Sabor, every Saturday night from 9-11pm on KPFA, 94.1 FM in Berkeley/San Francisco Northern California and on the web at www.kpfa.org.

Life Is Good Sometimes we have to take the time to appreciate all the beauty that surrounds us. When we are closed minded, too busy, short of time, lost in thoughts about our troubles...we lose sight of the little things and the people that make life worth living. We need to take a moment to appreciate that we wake up every morning to a new day. How that day turns out is completely up to us. Life is good when we take advantage of that opportunity to make things better.

CRUDE REFLECTIONS LOU DEMATTEIS Crude Reflections/Cruda Realidad chronicles the human and environmental impact of oil drilling in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where the pollution is so extensive that medical experts currently predict thousands of deaths from cancer and the disappearance of five indigenous rainforest communities. Community leaders and doctors already report elevated rates of cancer in the region, as well as birth defects. Photographers Lou Dematteis and Kayana Szymczak have documented the physical and emotional reality of those affected by this toxic contamination, roughly 30 times greater than the more widely reported Exxon Valdez spill.

HUNGRY PLANET ERIK OLSEN It's already been pretty much established that America is a fast food nation. In fact, a book by Eric Schlosser with that exact title pretty much spells it all out. Many of us eat our own weight in hamburgers and fries every year, and you could fill a Volkswagen with the amount of grease that oozes its way though our bodies in a lifetime. But is America unique in this respect? I'm always reading articles about how the Chinese are becoming increasingly obese. Same with the Europeans...yes, even the culinarily snooty French. But it still raises a very interesting question: What does the world eat?

THE LATIN REAL BOOK CHUCK SHER Over 550 pages of the best in contemporary and classic Salsa, Latin-Jazz and Brazilian music. Available in C, Bb and Eb versions. Detailed arrangements, exactly as recorded, to help your band play in authentic Latin styles. Including (on many tunes): • bass lines for each section • piano montunos • drum and percussion appendix • horn counter-lines Lyrics in Spanish, Portuguese and/or English. Sher Music Co.'s world-famous quality throughout. The only professional-level Latin fake book ever published!

UN TRIO INSEPARABLE INSTRUCTION IN THE TRADITIONAL POPULAR DANCES OF CUBA danzón - son - chachachá with maestro Roberto Borrell and dance partner Viola Gonzales DVD DESCRIPTION video type: instructional & demonstration dance level: beginning - intermediate 60 minutes of dance instruction 60 minutes of interviews and demonstrations Available in an English or Spanish version genres presented: danzón, son, chachachá

Un Trio Inseparable is a master class for all lovers of salsa, Latin dance, and Latin music, who want to learn and fully explore the three essential popular dance forms of Cuba from which all modern styles of salsa developed - the danzón, son, and chachachá. Leading the class is musician, dancer, and teacher extraordinaire Roberto Borrell, a Cuban gentleman who embodies his culture and has dedicated his life to perserving and passing on Cuba's rich traditions. Captivated by the music as a teenager, Roberto learned to dance and play music in the vibrant dance salons and social clubs of Havana in the early 1950's. See bio of Roberto Borrell. Over the past 20 years while residing the USA, Roberto has developed a comprehensive system of teaching the traditional popular dances of Cuba inspired by the manner in which he learned - the old school "open your eyes, open your ears" method. It’s a simple approach and yet you will be challenged to listen to your feet, to the music, and to become part of what Roberto calls the inseparable trio of the music, man, and woman. Accompanying Roberto is his favorite dance partner Viola Gonzales. Viola, along with her partner Garry Johnson, are professional dance teachers, and offer salsa classes in the San Francisco Bay Area.
