In a year in which normal life has come to

a standstill, few people have travelled as

frequently as Godolphin’s Nacim Dilmi,

so perhaps it is fitting that the French

expat will saddle up the aptly-named Trekking

(Street Cry) in today’s Winterbottom Stakes (Gr

With widespread state border closures

across Australia for the first time since

after Godolphin’s interstate raiders away from

Sydney and Melbourne.

“The first time we had to quarantine, we

went to South Australia for the winter carnival

so we were in a hotel room in Adelaide for

Nomadic Nacim ‘Treks’ to Winterbottom

“I was back in Sydney after the

Brisbane winter carnival and James asked me if I wanted to go to Perth, I

was happy to do that.

“It was harder to get into Western Australia than the other places

because I needed an actual permit just to enter the state, so that was hard

to do, but Perth Racing helped a lot. Actually, we got on the plane from

Sydney to Perth and the permit was still pending, so we didn’t even know

when we landed if we’d be approved to enter the state - we thought we

might have to turn around and go straight back to Sydney.

“Thankfully, it got approved once we landed. We had to do quarantine

here for two weeks - thankfully, we managed to make it work.”

The 33-year-old has been Godolphin head trainer James Cummings’

right-hand man since joining Leilani Lodge, then run by Cummings’

legendary grandfather Bart, in 2011. It was the culmination of a journey

with an inauspicious beginning in France.

“I started racing at the age of 13, when I always used to go to the

races with my dad,” he said. “I had no racing background in the family

but dad loves racing and loves a punt. Basically, that’s how I fell in love

with it.

“I went to the French Racing School (Ecole des Courses Hippiques)

in Chantilly, I did my apprenticeship with Criquette Head for five years. I

rode a few races, but when I put on a bit of weight and started to struggle

with that, with the dieting and all that, I decided to stop.

“I stayed there for a couple of years beyond that though and then I

went to England for three years. I rode for Paul Cole and Tom Dascombe

and that was where I met my

wife Lauren.”

The trek across the English

Channel was just the start of

his travels, though, with Dilmi

casting his eyes further afield.

In a different world, Dilmi could

have instead been celebrating

Thanksgiving this week in

the United States, free of the

quarantine shackles imposed in

Australia but also confronting

a Covid-19 situation far more

severe than down under.

“After three years in England, I thought I’d like to do something

different,” he said. “We looked at going to America, but it was getting a bit

too popular for Europeans to go there. This was 2009 and nobody really

came to Australia at that time so we decided to come here for six months;

we’ve been here 11 years.

“I started with Gai Waterhouse, did my six months, then I went and

worked in Melbourne for Greg Eurell for six months. I went to Sydney and

started to work for Bart Cummings, I worked for him for a month early on

but after Melbourne, I stayed there and went through the whole visa process.

“James was the foreman at the time, and then when James and Bart

went into partnership, I had the opportunity to step up as stable foreman.

And I’ve basically stayed on ever since! www.magicmillions.com.au

“When James took over the job at

Godolphin, they asked me if I’d like to join. Obviously, that was a no-

brainer, there was no doubt or no question. After three years or so,

I’ve been lucky enough to travel across the country with their horses -

Queensland, South Australia, Victoria a few times. It’s a great feeling when

you get to travel with good horses.”

Dilmi, whose clipped French accent is punctuated by an Australian

twang, spoke to ANZ Bloodstock News shortly after riding Winterbottom

Stakes favourite Trekking yesterday morning.

“Trekking has had a nice couple of weeks, they’ve been easy,” he said.

“He’s had three starts between Sydney and Melbourne, that hard run in

The Everest between the two Moonee Valley Group 1s.

“He had a nice trial on Monday with Willie Pike on at Belmont. He

wasn’t there to break any records and we treated it as a final gallop. It was

good for Willie to get a feel for him ahead of tomorrow’s race.

“He’s going into the Winterbottom in super order, I couldn’t be

happier with him. He’s feeling really well. Tomorrow will be his grand final

this preparation and I’d say he’ll go back to Sydney in a week or ten days

or so.”

Also under Dilmi’s auspices while in Perth is the enigmatic Kementari

(Lonhro), who finished midfield as top-weight in last weekend’s Railway

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

The six-year-old will have one more run in Perth, but which race is

yet to be decided, with the

Kingston Town Classic (Gr

1, 1800m) and the A J Scahill

Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) among his

options as he looks to break a

drought that stretches back to

the 2018 Randwick Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m).

“Kementari will have his

next run next weekend,” Dilmi said. “We haven’t ruled out the Kingston

Town yet, but at this stage, we’re going to give him a gallop on Tuesday

and we’ll see how he pulls up from that.

“He’s pulled up really well from the Railway, it was a good run. He’s

never been beyond a mile so James and the team will have a talk after his

gallop Tuesday and see whether we step him up to 1800 metres or go back

to the 1400 metres.”

As for the Dilmis, their nomadic 2020 is set to continue with one final

stop before the year is out.

“After we’re finished here, the horses will travel back to Sydney and

myself and Lauren will travel to Queensland for the summer,” he said.

Last night, Trekking was a $2.20 favourite with TAB for the

Winterbottom Stakes, which will jump at 5.30pm local time (8.30pm

ADST).

Miss Siska chasing Festival gloryMatthew Smith believes dual Group winner

Miss Siska (So You Think) will be competitive

in the Festival Stakes (Gr 3, 1500m) as Rosehill

today, as she returns from a two-month break.

The seven-year-old mare, who took out the

Peter Young Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and Carlyon

Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) earlier this year, has been

unplaced in her two races this preparation but

Smith believes her fitness is now where it needs

to be. "She is a big mare. She's 570 kilograms

and they take a power of getting fit," Smith

said. "So we just gave her those couple of runs

and got her fitness where we wanted it and

then gave her a freshen up to come back and

have a crack at these races." While Miss Siska

is at an age when many mares swap racing

for breeding, her owners have an appetite

to continue her racetrack career while she is

enjoying it. "They love racing so they're keen to

keep her going if she can perform at the right

level," Smith added. "If she runs up to her best

form she will be competitive for sure."

Farrell’s Boot ambitions for Super HotPat Farrell believes he has an ‘above average’

youngster on his hands in the form of Super Hot

(Outreach), who lines up in the De Bortoli Wines

Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill today. Super Hot

looked raw on debut in the Max Lees Classic

(900m) at Newcastle earlier this month but Farrell

was pleased with his fifth-placed showing and

expects him to appreciate the step up in trip. "It

was a good run but he would have been right in

the finish had he got away better," Farrell said.

"While I don't like to overwork two-year-olds,

he's had plenty going into this race and the extra

trip will suit. We'll play it by ear but if he runs well

we might head to the Wellington Boot and if he

wins that there's a chance the horse might be sold

to Hong Kong.” Super Hot, raced by Kempsey

breeder David Parker, is by Widden-based sire

Outreach (Exceed And Excel), who is a brother to

Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Overreach.

Bowman’s eyes Beyond todayOcean Beyond (Ocean Park), purchased

by Daniel Bowman for NZD$60,000 at New

Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready-To-Run Sale

last November, looks an exciting prospect

after winning on debut at Geelong earlier this

month and aims to confirm that promise in the

McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Moonee

Valley today. Despite being brought from a

ready-to-run sale, Bowman has been patient

with the three-year-old gelding and admits he

was always a long term prospect. "The breeze-

up wasn't actually that impressive. It was more

about the animal and the athlete," Bowman

told Racing.com. "He showed us a fair bit at

home, so we were pretty confident going to his

debut, but it is always nice to see them do it. It's

(McKenzie Stakes) a step-up but he's certainly

one in the race with some scope. The others are

exposed to a certain degree. If our bloke is ready

for it or not, we'll find out. He'll definitely be up

to this sort of level in time, but it would just be

nice to win tomorrow and get his rating up and

then we can set out a plan for the autumn."

Brave is yet to break his maiden in four starts and

Corstens will be hoping he can prove good enough

in this competitive contest. "Not quite sure he is up

to that grade, but I just thought it was worth a throw

at the stumps," Corstens said. "There's a million

1600-metre maidens we can run in anywhere and

originally this race tomorrow popped up with only

five nominations, which is why I was attracted to it in

the first place. He ran really well at Echuca (two starts

ago) and Mick Price's horse that beat him (Valanetti)

came out and ran third in the Sandown Guineas,

which prompted me to take him to Tatura thinking

he was a good thing. We just got too far back. We

were meant to lead, we didn't. The thing that led got

its own way and won. The dry track is really going to

suit him…he gets his chance to show us where he is

in the pecking order and what he can do."

Hughes bides time for summer successTom Hughes' patience has paid off with two

city winners in recent weeks after not having a

runner for three months. The Flemington trainer

bided his time and kept his powder dry, rather

than race his horses over the winter, and was

rewarded when Leiter (Wanted) won first-up at

Flemington on the final day of the Cup carnival

and The Commoner (Reward For Effort) won

at The Valley. Both horses will be in action at

Moonee Valley today. Hughes, who has two

wins, two thirds and a fifth from five runners this

season, said: "It's been good. I've only got seven

horses in work and I set Leiter for the Flemington

race three months ago. That's when it was first

talked about and three months of planning went

into it. At the end of last preparation he had

been racing well and we could have pushed on

through winter and might have won a race, but I

thought it was a chance to give him a good break

and let him develop.”

Socialising the one for GollanTony Gollan believes his progressive mare

Socialising (Bel Esprit) holds solid claims

in the Spirit Of

Boom Classic

(Listed, 1200m) at

Doomben today.

The five-year-old,

who has won four

of her last five

starts, has climbed

through the grades

since May and

makes her first

start in stakes company today. "Socialising has

got a bit of X-factor about her coming through

her grades and if she can get that soft run just

behind what will be a pretty good speed, she'll

get every chance to run on,” Gollan said. “Her

rating says she's not well in here at set weights

and penalties as a 78-rater but I think she'll

finish her career at a much higher level. Does

she need to be at this grade now? She probably

doesn't, but if I get the opportunity to go for

black-type or run in another class six then I'll

take the black-type. That's what it's all about

with these mares."

Jericho Cup heading the right waySymon Wilde believes the Jericho Cup (4600m)

can become one of the best days on the country

racing calendar, as Warrnambool prepares to

host the race for the third time tomorrow. Wilde

will be represented by Count Zero (Zed) and

Britannicus (Roman Emperor) in Australia’s

longest flat race, a contest he has targeted from

a long way out. "It's not just for the punter. It's

a point of difference as it's a real event," Wilde

said. "People can come to the races and see the

Light Horseman, listen to the Last Post. Kids

are intrigued and ask questions about the war.

It's not a pop-up money race. It's got history

behind it. There's something for everybody.

Unfortunately last year the weather was terrible

and now we've got Covid, but it will continue

to gain momentum. And it's a great race for

trainers with stayers. We target the race a long

way out. The distance is the great leveller. Most

horses won't run it out but my pair will.”

Dynamic duo in JerichoDynamic Syndications have two live chances

in the Jericho Cup, courtesy of Frenzied

(Americain) and Dambulla (Fastnet Rock).

Purchased for $85,000 and $150,000 respectively

at the 2017 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, the

owners envisaged the pair potentially lining up

in different Cup contests, but are hoping they

will both see out the 4600-metre trip. "It's a

terrific concept this race and we're very excited

to have two very live chances who are probably

racing at the peak of their powers," Dynamic’s

Adam Watt told Racing.com. "Frenzied is bred

to stick like chewing gum to a blanket. He's by a

Melbourne Cup winner and he's the grandson

of a Melbourne Cup winner in Lets Elope, so

it's really no surprise to see that he wants to

stay. He's a very tough horse, he's a multiple

track-record holder and he won a Bong Bong

Cup on this day last year, so he's used to

carrying weight. And I know Dambulla is a

son of Fastnet but his mother won out to 3000

metres in Europe, so he was always a horse

that we had bought thinking that he'd want

ground. I'm not sure 4600 metres was what

we thought - we syndicated him as a Derby or

Cups contender and he gets his chance in a

Jericho Cup on Sunday."

Newcastle postponed until TuesdayNewcastle’s meeting on Sunday has been

postponed until Tuesday, December 1 due to

forecast temperatures of 43 degrees in New

South Wales.

Vungers adds Wodonga Gold CupVungers (Reset) convincingly took out the

Wodonga Gold Cup (1590m) yesterday,

adding to his Donald Cup (1620m) victory

a fortnight ago. The seven-year-old gelding

grew his reputation as a country cup king

when leading from the front to defeat

Coming Around (Gingerbread Man) by four

and a quarter lengths, with Quiet Lucky

(Rockaroundtheclock) close behind in third.

"He's no superstar as I keep saying, but he's

no slouch either," trainer Brendon Hearps told

Racing.com. "Earlier on he looked like being

really good until he did a tendon and he's just

plodded along since. It's great for the owners -

they have been great owners in the stable for 25

years or so and they're rapt, so it will be another

big weekend."

Tabcorp, NZ TAB extend agreementTabcorp and NZ TAB have extended their

broadcasting and wagering rights agreement

for Australian and New Zealand racing. The

agreements guarantee the broadcast of NZ

racing into Australia through the Tabcorp-

owned Sky Racing network and vice versa

through TAB NZ’s Trackside broadcasting

service. Tabcorp’s managing director for

wagering & media, Adam Rytenskild, said: “We

are strong supporters of New Zealand racing

and we’re pleased to continue to work closely

with TAB NZ. Through this agreement, we will

continue to showcase New Zealand racing in

Australia and around the world via Sky Racing

and to facilitate the broadcast of Australian

racing in New Zealand. And co-mingling helps

provide deeper pools for TAB tote punters in

both countries.”

Victorian bookies hoping for returnVictorian bookmakers are lobbying for their

right to return to racetracks with crowds, after

Racing Victoria announced earlier this week that

500 spectators will be allowed at race meetings

from December 2. The Covid-19 pandemic has

resulted in the amount of punters using online

services increasing, but Victorian Bookmakers

Association co-chairman Lyndon Hsu believes

their on-course presence is vital to the industry.

“We are desperate as an association,’’ Hsu said.

“We have 155 members so, to fly the flag, even

if it is a notional one where we’ve just got a

couple of members on, but just to say ‘we are

back on course’. From March 15 to now, for the

first time in the history of racing, as far as we

can determine, there have been no bookmakers

on course. We’re a stakeholder of the Victorian

racing industry. We want to play our part. We

want to do everything possible to get everyone

back on course. The most important thing is

that we get ourselves back. If we are not there

when there is 500, we might struggle to be there

if there’s 1000.”

Younger Rawiller excited for family reunionCampbell Rawiller is looking forward to the return

of his father after it was announced this week that

Nash Rawiller will ride in Melbourne over the

festive season, with today’s meeting at Rosehill

being his last NSW fixture of the year. Nash will

reunite with his family and will likely stay until the

Gold Coast Magic Millions carnival, with a return

to Sydney anticipated in January. The reunion

will be the first time Campbell has seen his dad

since the pair rode against each other for the one

and only time in October last year. "He's been up

in Sydney since that and the borders have been

closed," the leading apprentice told Racing.com

on Friday. "It's been a long time since I've been

able to catch up with him again, so things have

been tough. But times are changing. This (Nash's

riding holiday in Melbourne) will allow him to

refresh in terms of seeing the family again and

spending a bit of time away from Sydney. He'll

be hungry to hit form pretty quickly here and it's

good for me to have my father and mentor here

again.”

Beer back on trackMitch Beer is hoping a fruitful summer can

follow a difficult period as his Albury-based

stable continues to rebuild having been hit

hard by the impact of Covid-19. Beer’s stock

had steadily grown since he relocated from

Mornington to Albury in 2018, capitalising on

his newfound proximity to both Melbourne and

Sydney. However, being based on the NSW side

of the border had disastrous effects when the

pandemic struck as he was unable to transport

horses to Victoria, where he generally prefers

to place his runners. As such, Beer was forced

to send a significant number of his string to

other trainers. “It was like we had been charged

with something or been disqualified because

I was sitting around trying to place the horses

elsewhere with other trainers," Beer rold Racing.

com. "I've taken a Victorian client base and

moved to Albury, so a majority of my owners

want to see their horses run in Melbourne

as opposed to Sydney. At one stage there we

had 22 horses that were either in pre-training

or with other trainers...it was a hard thing to

swallow and mentally it had a big impact on me

at the time because it just felt like everything I

had worked hard for had walked out the gate."

However, as of Monday, Beer has been able to

move between Albury and his native Victoria,

and the horses that temporarily left have all

returned. His staff, some of whom were forced

to relocate from Wodonga to the Victorian side

of the border to continue work, can now return

home while life at the stables is returning to

normal. "When the borders opened this week

and we don't have to arrange permits, it was like

an abscess had burst when those walls finally

came down,” Beer added.

Apprentice Lloyd off the mark first-up Apprentice jockey Zac Lloyd, from a family

steeped in racing as a son of Jeff Lloyd, a

nephew of Glyn Schofield and a cousin of Hong

Kong-based Chad Schofield, made his first ride

a winning one yesterday when guiding Satine

(Super One) to victory at Dalby for his retained

stable of Toby and Trent Edmonds. The filly

was breaking her maiden at her fifth start and

a jubilant Lloyd told Sky Racing post-race: “It’s

amazing. It’s been such a longtime coming

and I just can’t thank Mr Edmonds and Trent

enough for the ride. She was the perfect first

ride for an apprentice. One she jumped, put

herself there and relaxed around the turn, I

thought it’s going to need a nice horse to beat

me. I’m really happy.”

Laing’s $750 filly bound for townBargain buy Divine Waters (Headwater) will make

her debut at Moonee Valley today or Sandown on

Wednesday, with trainer Jack Laing excited about

taking the wraps off his daughter of Headwater

(Exceed And Excel). Laing, whose father Robbie

prepared $4,000 yearling Polanski (Rakti) to win

the 2013 Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), believes

his $750 purchase boasts ability that belies her

modest price tag. "My friend actually purchased

her," Laing told Racing.com. "He was very newly

getting into the breeding side of things and I'm

obviously pretty interested in it, so I was reeling

off a few crosses that I liked. A day or two later

he sent me a screenshot of the filly and I thought

she'd go pretty cheap because Headwater hadn't

had a runner then. The hammer went down

at $750 and I think it was only a month or two

later that Wisdom Of Water started to do a bit of

damage up north and suddenly she looked like a

nice buy." Divine Waters won an 800-metre trial

at Cranbourne on her second public appearance

and Laid added: "It wasn't a time to get excited

about, but I just love her attitude." Divine Waters

has accepted for today’s 1000-metre contest

at Moonee Valley, but Laing might consider

scratching her from barrier 12 and look to a

1000-metre fillies’ heat at Sandown next week.

Khufu to reign at Ellerslie

Cambridge trainer Tony Pike will introduce

punters to a colt at Ellerslie today that could

one day become their darling. Pike will produce

Khufu (American Pharoah) on debut in the

Eagle Charters 1100, hoping the youngster

can showcase the ability that has his trainer

so excited about him. Pike bought the Nearco

Stud-bred Khufu for NZ$150,000 at this year's

Karaka Premier Yearling Sale out of the draft of

Curraghmore and has kept up payments for the

colt to be eligible for January's Karaka Million

(RL, 1200m) at Ellerslie. "He's very promising.

He's shown us plenty of the track," Pike said.

"He won his first trial nicely at Ruakaka then got

stuck in the mud a bit at Matamata at his second

trial. But he's a big, strong horse and he'll get

back to a better track at Ellerslie on Saturday

and barring bad luck, we think he should be

right in the finish." Khufu, out of the stakes-

winning, twice Group 1-placed mare Strada

Cavallo (Alamosa), is part of an ownership

syndicate involving several influential owners

and stud farms. "He was a lovely loose walking

yearling with plenty of size and strength about

him. He's not just a two-year-old either. We

think he'll develop into an even better horse as

he gets older," Pike said.

Promising three-year-old getting a GripBallymore Stables have a big rap on three-

year-old colt Grip (Exosphere) and they are

hoping he can show his class at Ellerslie

today when he lines-up in the Trevor Eagle

Memorial (Listed, 1500m). The colt recorded

his maiden victory at Pukekohe last start and

Pam Gerard, who trains in partnership with

Michael Moroney, believes he will be very

competitive in his first stakes assignment.

“We are pretty happy with him and he has

shown us he has got some potential,” she said.

“He pretty much did it last start on natural

ability. He is still quite green, he has a lot to

learn, but he did it easy enough. He probably

got lost out in front when he got there a bit

too soon. It was a good effort.” Grip has drawn

barrier 13 for Saturday and Gerard said that

is an ideal gate for him. “It’s not the worst

place for him,” she said. “He likes to get back

and run home. Even if he is three-wide with

cover midfield, that’s not a bad place for him.”

Purchased out of Bradbury Park’s 2019 New

Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Yearling Sale draft

for NZ$100,000, Grip is on a path towards the

New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).

New Plymouth to host Rosie Myers benefit racedayThe New Zealand racing industry will

continue to support the recovery of injured

jockey Rosie Myers with a benefit raceday at

New Plymouth next Thursday. The popular

rider has been in hospital since suffering a

head injury in a fall at the Foxton trials on

October 6. “Rosie is a very popular member of

the racing community and all of the industry

is keen to support her as she recovers,”

Taranaki Racing chief executive Carey Hobbs

said. “Taranaki Racing have been inundated

with support for the day and are currently

organising a sweepstake for racing clubs, the

idea of Waikato Racing Club chief executive

Butch Castles. Each club will donate $1,000

and get a number. The number with most

points will win a hospitality package for 20

with Taranaki Racing. The Egmont Racing

Club at Hawera were the first to agree, as Rosie

is a Hawera-born lass. They were quickly

followed by Waikato, Counties, Auckland,

Hawke’s Bay, RACE, Ruakaka Racing, Otaki-

Maori and Canterbury, who also donated

a second prize – a hospitality package for

10 at the Winter Cup Meeting. And more

clubs are expected to join very shortly. The

New Zealand Trainers’ Association and

New Zealand Jockeys’ Association are also

supporting the Fundraising Raceday by each

donating from every win on the day. The TAB

are looking at setting up a Givealittle page for

the week, and other promotions to support

the cause.”

NZTR to develop sustainable industry blueprintThe board of New Zealand Thoroughbred

Racing (NZTR) has announced a number of

key decisions and initiatives that were recently

agreed at its November 25 board meeting. “I’m

excited by the options we have in front of us to

create a vibrant future and implement actions

to energise, excite and set up a sustainable

future, in line with our own way of thinking

and considerations from the Messara Report,”

NZTR chairman Cameron George said. “Our

priority was to ensure we continued with

Bernard Saundry as chief executive until July

31, 2022. This enables the board to build on

existing relationships for the greater benefit of

the industry in the short to mid-term, while a

number of other actions are being managed

into place for the longer term. To have stability

in the CEO role for a further 12 months beyond

this racing season is sensible, and crucial for our

industry in reaching its long-term potential.”

In addition to Saundry’s extension, the Board

resolved to undertake an organisational review

of NZTR. This will include, but is not limited

to, structure, capability, resource, culture, and

location.

HK: Shadow Hero steps out at Sha TinDual Australian Group 1 winner Shadow

Hero (Pierro) will make his Hong Kong debut

for David Hayes tomorrow, with the four-

year-old starting out on the path to next

year’s Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m).

Formerly trained by Mark Newnham, for

whom he won the Spring Champion Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m) and Randwick Guineas (Gr 1,

1600m), Shadow Hero will face two former

compatriots over 1400 metres when he lines

up against Tourmillon Diamond (Olympic

Glory), an Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)

placegetter when racing as Eric The Eel, and

former Godolphin representative Chenier

(Medaglia D’Oro), who now races as Enrich

Delight. Hayes has thus far trained six winners

in his first season back in Hong Kong, while

he landed the Hong Kong Derby with Elegant

Fashion (Danewin) in 2003.

“If he’d stayed in Australia, he’d definitely

have been a top class weight-for-age horse

so I’m really excited to see race and progress

towards some pretty big goals,’’ Hayes said of

Shadow Hero. “All his build up to his return

has been very pleasing. He’ll go second-up into

international day and next year I reckon we’ll

see him in one of the big ones.’’

HK: Fast Most Furious eyes Hong Kong Mile startFast Most Furious (Lope De Vega) will put his

Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) credentials on

show tomorrow at Sha Tin when he contests

the Chevalier Cup with a start in next month’s

HK$25 million (approx. AUD$4.37 million)

mile, subject to his screen test this weekend.

“He’s very difficult to place now - he’s still in

the big race and the chance of him lining up

depends on what happens this weekend,”

trainer David Hall said. “It’s hard with top-

weight and the wide draw - it might be all a

little bit suspect about whether he makes it to

December, but we’ll see how he goes.” Hall’s

chestnut is one of 13 selected to compete in

the Hong Kong Mile at the HK$95 million

(approx. AUD$16.61 million) showcase against

a number of world heavyweights from Japan

and Ireland as well as fellow Hong Kong-

trained horses Beauty Generation (Road To

Rock), Golden Sixty (Medaglia d’Oro), Waikuku

(Harbour Watch) and Southern Legend (Not A

Single Doubt). “I think it’s just a bonus that he’d

make the field but there is nowhere else for him

to go, so your hands are tied and you probably

have to run but racing’s a funny game - funny

things happen and there’s prize-money all the

way down to sixth place,” Hall said.

42 for Le HavreLeading French stallion Le Havre (Noverre)

brought up his 42nd individual stakes winner

on Thursday when Orglandes (4 f ex Influence

by Dansili) took out the Red Carpet Handicap

(Gr 3, 11f) at Del Mar. Prepared by America’s

top turf trainer Chad Brown, French import

Orglandes made her first start in California

a winning one, defeating Going To Vegas

(Goldencents) by a half-length with a further

length back to Quick (Olympic Glory) in

third. The Red Carpet, formerly the Beverly

Hills Handicap and a Grade 1 at Hollywood

Park from 1988 to 2002, has been won by New

Zealand mares Happyanunoit (Yachtie) and

Black Mamba (Black Minnaloushe) in the past.

However, Orglandes is the first foreign-bred

mare to take the feature since Japanese Group 1

winner Nuovo Record swept past her American

rivals in 2016. Le Havre stands for €40,000

(approx. AUD$64,600) at Montfort et Preaux,

now under the Sumbe banner, in 2021.

UK: Warrior and Zoustar continue fine run at Tattersalls As highlighted in today’s International Sales

News, Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact) and

Zoustar (Northern Meteor) made an instant

impact with their first foals in the Tattersalls

sales ring on Thursday, and the duo built on that

success with a number of eye-catching lots on

Friday. Coolmore shuttler Saxon Warrior was

responsible for the second highest-priced lot at

the time of going to press, a 280,000gns (approx.

AUD$531,000) filly who was knocked down to

Stauffenberg Bloodstock Services having been

offered by Norris Bloodstock. The February-

born youngster is out an unraced own-sister

to US Grade 1 winner Prince Arch (Arch).

Meanwhile, Widden Stud resident Zoustar had

a further seven lots sold on Friday, headlined

by a 150,000gns (approx. AUD$285,000) colt

from dual Group 1 winner La Collina (Strategic

Prince). She went the way of Paca Paca Farm

having been offered by Kenilworth House Stud.

Read tomorrow’s ANZ Bloodstock for the full

report on Friday’s session at Park Paddocks.

UK: Oisin Murphy receives three-month ban after French cocaine positive upheldOisin Murphy has been banned for three

months by France Galop stewards following a

positive urine test for metabolites of cocaine.

The dual champion jockey in Britain, who has

decided not to appeal against the decision,

would ordinarily have been looking at a six-

month suspension, but the stewards were

persuaded by a combination of evidence from

a hair test and Murphy's own testimony that

he was contaminated after having sex with a

person he later discovered to be a user. The case

recalls that of the French tennis player, Richard

Gasquet, who successfully appealed to the

Court of Arbitration for Sport that he had been

contaminated by a sexual partner. Murphy was

unwilling to identify the person concerned

and thus the disciplinary committee were left

with the possibility raised by the hair test that

he may have taken the drug once, though he

could not be considered a habitual user. France

Galop will expect the ban to be reciprocated in

other racing jurisdictions including Britain and

Ireland and it is virtually unheard of for such

a request from a Tier 1 nation to be denied.

Murphy tested positive after riding at The Lir

Jet (Prince Of Lir) at Chantilly on July 19. In

response to the ban, Murphy said: “Whilst I am

obviously disappointed that I will still have to

serve a three-month suspension, I am pleased

the commissioners accepted the evidence

presented and am hugely relieved to have been

cleared of taking cocaine. I respect the rules of

France Galop, respect their decision and will

not be appealing.”

First season shuttlers Saxon Warrior

(Deep Impact) and Zoustar

(Northern Meteor) proved popular

with buyers during the second

session of the Tattersalls December Foal Sale

on Thursday, with both stallions returning

impressive results.

Coolmore resident Saxon Warrior had four

colts sold for an average 100,750gns (approx.

AUD$192,000), which included a 160,000gns

(approx. AUD$304,000) Highclere Stud-

consigned youngster who went the way of Camas

Park Stud. The same buyer returned with a bid of

100,000gns (approx. AUD$190,000) for a colt from

Alltherightmoves (Namid) later in the session.

Meanwhile, Widden Stud resident Zoustar

had nine youngsters sold for 409,000gns

(approx. AUD$776,500), including two six-

figure lots. A colt from Plantation Stud went

the way of Yeomanstown Stud for 110,000gns

(approx. AUD$209,000) shortly after Tweenhills

Farm & Stud, Zoustar’s northern hemisphere

base, offered a son of the well-related

Bewitchment (Pivotal) for 100,000gns (approx.

AUD$190,000).

The exceptional Sea The Stars (Cape Cross),

sire of Stradivarius, Taghrooda and Sea Of Class,

was responsible for the 170,000gns (approx.

AUD$323,000) session topper as the day two

median of 25,000gns (approx. AUD$47,500)

and average of 33,888gns (approx. AUD$64,500)

had dropped a little year-on-year.

Turnover was also down, 7,014,800gns

(approx. AUD$13,320,000) compared to

8,532,700gns grossed 12 months ago, although

the clearance rate was up five per cent to 84.

Saxon begins the advanceThere were glowing commendations from

senior parties on each side of the transaction

which saw a member of the dual Group 1 winner

Saxon Warrior's first crop reach 160,000gns, top

lot for the vast majority of the day.

Hindsight often bathes an auction

success in a more favourable light but

auctioneer Alastair Pim had assessed that

Lot 603 was a hard horse to find fault with

during his warm-up routine and good

judges clearly agreed.

He provided enough of a persuasive case

for Timmy Hyde of Camas Park Stud, bidding

from an increasingly chilly position outside the

entrance to the auditorium as the afternoon

sun faded away, to claim the son of Listed

scorer Aktoria (Canford Cliffs) as a pinhooking

prospect for next year.

"He was a hell of a racehorse. One of the best

racehorses for many, many years," said Hyde of

Saxon Warrior, an intriguing 2,000 Guineas (Gr

1, 1m)-winning mix of Deep Impact (Sunday

Silence) and Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) blood who

will stand for €20,000 (approx. AUD$32,500) at

Coolmore next year.

Having also won the Racing Post Trophy

(Gr 1, 1m) at two, Saxon Warrior is standing at

Coolmore Australia for a fee of $17,600 in 2020.

His first southern hemisphere foals will be born

this spring having covered 97 mares at a fee of

$24,750 in 2019.

Foals are on offer here in various stages

of physical development and this individual

seemed well on track to become a perfectly-

formed racehorse, with a mature temperament

to boot.

"I think there'd been a very good vibe about the

horse, as indeed I think it has been of all the Saxon

Warriors," said Highclere's Lady Carolyn Warren.

"I think he’s getting great stock and this horse is

testament to that, but there are others as well."

Highclere has only resumed selling foals

recently and Warren credited Leonidas and

Marina Marinopoulos, who bred the colt in

France. Aktoria carried their starred silks made

famous by the likes of globe-trotting Presvis

(Sakhee).

"He came over to us from Marmion, the

Marinopoulos's stud farm - he was born lovely

and has been very straightforward to prep. A

really gorgeous horse. They are tremendous

breeders who have been in the game for a very

long time," Warren added.

Zoustar spearheads Tweenhills newcomers

Two more new stallion names to this ring

were representing Tweenhills, through the late

Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) and dual Group

1 winner Zoustar, who has made a striking

impression with his first southern hemisphere

runners. The reigning Australian champion first

and second season sire has produced 16 stakes

winners, including three-time Group 1 heroine

Sunlight.

These are the first crop of northern

hemisphere-bred foals to be offered at auction

by Zoustar, who was introduced to northern

hemisphere breeders at £25,000 (approx.

AUD$45,200) when standing at Tweenhills

in 2019. He will once again be offered at that

fee in 2021 having stood for £30,000 (approx.

AUD$54,200) this year.

The colt from the Tweenhills draft out of

Pivotal (Polar Falcon) mare Bewitchment had

kept the stud's David Redvers particularly

busy before being bought over the phone for

100,000gns by David Howden.

"I don't think we've ever had a foal vetted

so many times," Redvers said. Howden, an

insurance tycoon who has taken over the

Cornbury Park estate in Oxfordshire, also added

the highest-priced of the three Roaring Lions

offered for 82,000gns (approx. AUD$155,500).

"He saw all the foals on the farm and

particularly loved those two," said Redvers. "I

didn't know at what level he was interested but

he got into racing two years ago and these ones

will run in his colours."

Sea The Stars steals the headlines

Sea The Stars has already provided a

professional highlight for Gerard Lowry of

Oneliner Stables, who caught a few by surprise

when slipping in to buy another colt by the

stallion great for 170,000gns late in the day.

The Newsells Park-consigned Lot 718, out of

Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) mare La Mortola

from the family of Jakkalberry (Storming

Home) and Crackerjack King (Shamardal),

was announced as being knocked down to an

online bidder, as it indeed was, but Lowry was

nonetheless in situ in Park Paddocks.

At Book 1 last year, the Oneliner family

operation had what Gerard Lowry described

as a "life-changing" pinhook with a Sea The

Stars colt bought for 330,000gns as a foal and

exchanged for 725,000gns as a yearling.

"The technology is there to be used, it was

nice to try it out," said Lowry.

"The horse was our pick of the day.

Obviously when you've been lucky with a sire

in the past, it's hard not to go back to them and

hopefully we can bring this one back next year

now."

Although consigned by Newsells Park,

the January 30-born colt was the property of

Graham Smith-Bernal, an entrepreneur in

ground-breaking legal technology.

Newsells Park's Julian Dollar said: "Graham

Smith-Bernal bought the mare from Kiltinan

three years ago with Jill Lamb [for 350,000gns]

and the Frankel yearling sold well to Godolphin

last year.

"He's quite new to the game and is someone

good to have around. He boards a few mares

with us and I hope he has some luck."

Oneliner later swooped for a 140,000gns

(approx. AUD$265,700) Camelot (Montjeu)

colt from Belmont Stud, third top lot and one

of 11 to crack six figures in what was a flurry of

evening activity.

Big day for new name Havana There had been a good word about for one

of the first progeny of Havana Grey (Havana

Gold), whose home at Whitsbury Manor sold

a half-brother to Cornwallis Stakes (Gr 3, 5f)

winner Good Vibes (Due Diligence) to Paca

Paca’s Harry Sweeney for 130,000gns (approx.

AUD$247,500).

"I can’t believe someone from Japan wants to

buy from a stallion I’m standing for £6,000," said

an emotional Ed Harper of Whitsbury Manor.

"There is a slight tinge of sadness that I'm not

going to see him race here as I've just stared at

him ever since he was born but I can't complain."

Eyes on the TigerJessica Marcialis created one of the stories of

the season when galloping to Marcel Boussac (Gr

1, 1600m) glory aboard Tiger Tanaka (Clodovil),

the first foal of Zoffany (Dansili) mare Miss

Phillyjinks, who was let go for just €6,500.

One Group 1 update later and the bonuses

are starting to be reciprocated for Kellsgrange

Stud, who collected 72,000gns (approx.

AUD$136,500) from their next progeny, a colt

by Dragon Pulse (Kyllachy), who will make his

way across the Channel after being knocked

down to Ed Sackville of SackvilleDonald.

He said: "He's been bought by an end user

and is more likely to go to France because the

family has done well there. It has been a great

story with Tiger Tanaka, she's a Group 1 winner

and you don't get better than that."

"A great result for a mare that was bought

for €3,500," said Kellsgrange manager Dermot

Dwan. "The mare's in foal to the right stallion

in Mehmas."
