INTRODUCTIONEINLEITUNGThe Science Film Festival is a celebration of science communication and enjoys a unique position in Southeast Asia and the Middle East: In cooperation with local partners it promotes science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through film and television content coupled with accompanying educational activities. The festival seeks to explain scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be communicated in an educational, as well as entertaining manner. The event has grown considerably since its first edition in 2005, meanwhile becoming the largest event of its kind worldwide in terms of audience reach.

By facilitating cooperation between local and international agencies from the scientific, cultural, educational and environmental sector, with the generous support of the international film and television community, an effective infrastructure has been put into place for the dissemination of scientific understanding and access to knowledge. Furthermore, the festival offers a platform for intercultural exchange through which different approaches to the world of science converge. During the festival period, the films are screened non-commercially in museums, schools, universities and other educational venues through coordinated efforts of partners with existing networks and the capabilities to organize such screenings. All films are synchronized into local language to offer viewers unhindered access to the content without language barriers.

The festival contributes to the development of a science communication infrastructure and supports science education in the countries in which it takes place, both of which are integral to the capacity development of a generation that has to exist in a global knowledge society.

Das Science Film Festival ist eine Feier der Wissenschaftskommunikation und genießt eine besondere Position in Südostasien und im Nahen Osten: In Kooperation mit den Partnern vor Ort fördert es wissenschaftliche Bildung und unterstützt das Bewusstsein für aktuelle wissenschaftliche, technologische und umweltbedingte Probleme durch die Medium Film und Fernsehen. Das Festival präsentiert Filme, die wissenschaftliche Gegebenheiten auf zugängliche und unterhaltsame Weise einem breiten Publikum erklären. Die Filmauswahl demonstriert, dass wissenschaftliche Inhalte mit einem Bildungshintergrund auch in einer unterhaltsamen Art und Weise durch audio-visuelle Medien vermittelt werden können. Seit der ersten Auflage 2005 konnte das Festival ein bedeutendes Wachstum vorweisen und ist mittlerweile das größte Festival dieser Art weltweit.

Mit der unterstützenden Kooperation durch lokale und internationale Akteure aus dem Wissenschafts-, Kultur-, Bildungs- und Umweltsektor und zusammen mit der großzügigen Förderung der internationalen Film- und Fernsehgesellschaft entsteht eine effektive Infrastruktur, die das Verständnis für die Wissenschaft fördert und den allgemeinen Zugang zu Wissen erleichtert. Darüber hinaus ist das Festival durch verschiedene Medienzugänge zur Welt des Wissens eine Plattform für interkulturelle Begegnungen. Während des Festivals werden die Filme nicht-kommerziell in Museen, Schulen, Universitäten oder anderen Bildungsstätten gezeigt. Dies wird durch die Bemühungen unserer Partner, vorhandene Netzwerke und gegebene Räumlichkeiten ermöglicht.

Das Festival trägt zur infrastrukturellen Entwicklung von Wissenschaftskommunikation bei und fördert die wissenschaftliche Ausbildung in seinen Gastländern. Beides ist wesentlich für die Entwicklung der Kapazität einer Generation in der globalen Wissensgesellschaft von heute.

GENERAL OVERVIEWALLGEMEINER ÜBERBLICKIn 2013, the Science Film Festival was organized in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao P.D.R., Jordan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Palestine, the Philippines, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. The festival, which focused on Energy & Sustainability, took place internationally from October 24 to December 15, 2013, with local dates varying by country within this period.

Das Science Film Festival wurde im Jahr 2013 in Kambodscha, Indonesien, Jordanien, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, den Palästinensischen Gebieten, den Philippinen, Thailand, den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und Vietnam organisiert. Das Festival mit dem thematischen Schwerpunkt auf Energie und Nachhaltigkeit fand international vom 24. Oktober bis 15. Dezember 2013 mit verschienenen Terminen in den jeweiligen Ländern statt.

The event reached over 440 000 visitors in 11 countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. The outcome further strengthens its position as the largest event of its kind worldwide in terms of audience figures and contributes to its recognition as one of the most effective science education popularization initiatives in both regions.

COuNTRy OVERVIEWSLÄNDERÜBERBLICKThe Science Film Festival is organized in each country by the Goethe-Institut in close cooperation with local partners. The festival relies on the collaboration and active participation of science education agencies and facilities, schools, universities, and cultural centres in each of the host countries, as well as the enthusiasm of their staff and other implementation partners, such as NGOs, educators or student volunteer groups, who conduct the screenings and activities.

The following offers an overview of the Science Film Festival structures in each festival country in 2013:

Das Science Film Festival wird in jedem Land vom Goethe-Institut in enger Kooperation mit lokalen Partnern organisiert. Das Festival verlässt sich auf die Zusammenarbeit und aktive Beteiligung von Wissenschaftsvertretern und Einrichtungen, Schulen, Universitäten und Kulturzentren in jedem Gastland, sowie auf den Enthusiasmus der Mitarbeiter und anderen Implementierungspartnern, wie etwa den der NGOs, Lehrkräfte oder der studentischen Freiwilligengruppen, welche die Filmvorführungen und Aktivitäten durchführen.

Im Folgenden wird ein Überblick der Strukturen des Science Film Festivals in jedem gastland des Jahres 2013 gezeigt:

CAMbOdIA 5TH EDITIONKAMbOdSChA 5. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival in Cambodia reached 17 249 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Thailand in cooperation with the Khmer youth and Social Development organization, the Ministry of education, youth and Sport, UNESCO and the MetaHouse German Cultural Centre. Core partners and supporters included the CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the Mekong Water Dialogues.

Screenings were organized from November 1 to 20 in Phnom Penh and travelled to Kompong Thom and Kompot province. The screenings and activities were carried out countrywide through the efforts of the volunteers of the Khmer youth and Social Development Organisation network.

Das Science Film Festival in Kambodscha hat 17.249 Besucher erreicht und wurde vom Goethe-Institut Thailand in Kooperation mit der Khmer youth and Social Development organization, dem Ministerium für bildung, Jugend und Sport, der UNESCO und dem MetaHouse German Cultural Centre organisiert. Hauptpartner und Unterstützer waren CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food, International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Mekong Water Dialogues.

Die Filmvorführungen fanden vom 1. bis 20. November in Phnom Penh statt und wanderten in die Provinzen Kompong Thom und Kompot. Die Filmvorführungen und Aktivitäten wurden landesweit mithilfe der Bemühungen der Freiwilligen des Khmer youth and Social Development organisation Netzwerkes durchgeführt.


INdONESIA 4TH EDITIONINdONESIEN 4. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival in Indonesia reached 39 207 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Indonesia in cooperation with Allianz, Siemens, HiLo School, Santika Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia, Institut Français Indonesia, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Indonesia and Universitas Paramadina. Media partner included the Kompas group, the Jakarta Post, Speak!, bobo, national Geographic Kids Indonesia and Girls. Supporters and venue partners included PT. Kuark Internasional, WWF Indonesia, Bosowa Foundation, Kementrian Pendidikan Nasional, Pemda Daerah Istimewa yogyakarta, Paguyuban Dimas Diajeng Jogja, Sekolah anak alam (SaLaM), bTDc nusa Dua bali, Nusa Dua Reef Foundation, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW), Universitas Kristen Petra, Institut Teknologi bandung (ITb), World of Maluku (WoM), Pusat Peragaan IPTeK (PP IPTeK), SDK calvin, SMan Sulawesi Selatan, Wisma Jerman and PASCH schools.

Screenings were organized from November 14 to 30 in Jakarta at the goethe-Institut, Universitas Paramadina, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara, PP IPTEK-TMII, and SD Kristen Calvin. Additionally, screenings were hosted in the following 20 cities: Aceh, Ambon, Bali, Bandung, Bogor, Jakarta, Jayapura, Makassar, Malang, Medan, Palembang, Palu, Pontianak, Salatiga, Samarinda, SOE, Solo, Surabaya, Tomohon and yogyakarta.

JORdAN 1ST EDITIONJORdANIEN 1. AUSGABE

In Jordan, the Science Film Festival reached 3 500 visitors and was organized by the goethe-Institut Jordan in cooperation with the children’s Museum Jordan for the first time.

Screenings were organized from November 17 to 28 at the children’s Museum Jordan for school classes and families alike. Special guests of the Science Film Festival in Jordan were producers Jacinta Madsen and presenter Kåre nielsen of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation educational programme “Nerd Academy”, who presented live experiments on energy to school children.

In Jordanien wurde das Science Film Festival vom goethe-Institut Jordanen in Kooperation mit dem children’s Museum Jordan zum ersten Mal organisiert und hat 3.500 besucher erreicht.

Die Filmvorführungen fanden vom 17. bis 28. November in dem children’s Museum Jordan für Schulklassen und Familien


statt. Die Produzentin Jacinta Madsen und der Moderator Kåre nielsen des bildungsprogrammes “nerd academy” von der Danish Broadcasting Corporation waren Ehrengäste des Filmfestivals in Jordanien. Der Moderator zeigte Schulkindern live Experimente zu dem Thema Energie.

LAO P.d.R. 2ND EDITIONLAOS 2. AUSGABE

In Laos, the Science Film Festival reached 18 252 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Thailand in cooperation with the Participatory Development Training Centre in conjunction with the Cinema Department, Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, the Research Institute for Education, the Ministry of Education and Sport, DOKLAO, the GIZ, SDC Swiss Development Cooperation, the CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the Mekong Water Dialogues.

Screenings were organized from November 7 to December 15 in Vientiane Capital and also in Savannakhet, Khammouane, Champasak, Xayabouly and Vientiane Province. In Vientiane Capital screenings were held in the National Cultural Hall. In the five provinces the films were screened at schools and educational facilities. The screenings and activities were carried out countrywide through the efforts of the volunteers of the Participatory Development Training Centre network.

Das Science Film Festival in Laos hat 18.252 Besucher erreicht und wurde vom Goethe-Institut Thailand in Kooperation mit dem Participatory Development Training centre zusammen mit der Filmabteilung (cinema Department), dem Ministerium für Information, Kultur und Tourismus, dem Forschungsinstitut für bildung (the Research Institute for education), dem Ministerium für bildung und Sport, DoKLao, der GIZ, des CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food und der International Union for the Conservation of Nature and der Mekong Water Dialogues organisiert.

Die Filmvorführungen fanden vom 7. November bis 15. Dezember in der Hauptstadt Vientiane, sowie in Savannakhet, Khammouane, Champasak, Xayabouly und in der Vientiane Provinz statt. In der Hauptstadt Vientiane wurden die Filmvorführungen in der National Cultural Hall durchgeführt. In den fünf Provinzen wurden die Filme in Schulen und Bildungseinrichtungen gezeigt. Die Filmvorführungen und Aktivitäten wurden landesweit mithilfe der Bemühungen der Freiwilligen des Participatory Development Training Centre Netzwerkes durchgeführt.

MALAySIA 3RD EDITIONMALAySIA 3. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival in Malaysia reached 28 000 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Malaysia, the Ministry of Education, the German-Malaysian Institute, MAP KL at Publika Solaris and the Malaysian Nature Society. Core partner and supporter was Siemens Malaysia.

Screenings took place from November 21 to December 15 at 450 schools and universities nationwide, through the collaboration of the Malaysian Nature Society and Ministry of Education. Further screenings were also held at the German-Malaysian Institute campus, the Golden Screen Cinema at the Pavilion in Bukit Bintang, Publika at Dutamas Solaris and at Siemens Malaysia in Petaling Jaya.

In Malaysia hat das Science Film Festival 28.000 Besucher erreicht und wurde vom Goethe-Institut Malaysia und zusammen mit dem Bildungsministerium, dem Deutsch-Malaysischem Institut, MAP KL, Publika Solaris und der Malaysian Nature Society organisiert. Hauptpartner und Unterstützer war Siemens Malaysia.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Malaysian Nature Society und dem Bildungsministerium fanden die Filmvorführungen vom 21. November bis 15. Dezember in 400 Schulen und Universitäten landesweit statt. Zusätzliche Filmvorführungen wurden auf dem Campus des Deutsch-Malaysischen Institutes, in dem Golden Screen Cinema in der Pavilion Shopping Mall, Publika at Dutamas Solaris und bei Siemens Malaysia in Petaling Jeya durchgeführt.


MyANMAR 2ND EDITIONMyANMAR 2. AUSGABE

The Science Film Festival in Myanmar reached 10 989 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Myanmar in cooperation with MRTV 4 (Foredu channel), Institut Français, KMSS (Karuna Myanmar Social Services) and yMca of Myanmar (young Man christian association). core partners and supporters were the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Mekong Water Dialogues and the CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food.

Screenings were organized from November 16 to December 15 in yangon, bago, Mandalay, Kyaikhto, Phaekon, Moe byae, Loikaw, nyung Ton, hlaing Thar yar, hmaw bi and Phyar Pon. Volunteers from partner organizations carried out the screenings and activities.

PALESTINE 1ST EDITIONPALÄSTINENSISChE GEbIETE 1. AUSGABE

In Palestine, the Science Film Festival reached 10 000 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Palestine in cooperation with the A. M. Qattan Foundation, the Institut Français and general consulate of France in Jerusalem

for the first time under the umbrella of the “Science Days Palestine 2013”.

Screenings were organized from November 10 to 14 at various educational institutions such as Ni’lin Teachers Center in Ramallah, Dar Annadwa and Alliance Française in bethlehem, Jericho Municipality, the Korea Palestine center and in different schools in Hebron, in Dar I´ssaf Nashashibi for culture in Jerusalem and cinema Jenin, the Qattan center for the Child in Gaza and up to 17 other Palestinian cities, towns and villages.

With the official opening in Ramallah on November 10, the Science Film Festival was also officially launched in the Middle east for the first time. Producer Jacinta Madsen and presenter Kåre nielsen of the Danish educational programme “The Nerd Academy” were invited as special guests to the Science Film Festival in Palestine.

In Palästina hat das Science Film Festival 10.000 Besucher erreicht und wurde vom Goethe-Institut Palästina in Kooperation mit der A. M. Qattan Foundation, dem Institut Français und dem Französischen Generalkonsulat in Jerusalem zum ersten Mal unter dem Schirm der “Science Days Palestine 2013” organisiert.

Die Filmvorführungen fanden vom 10. bis 14. November in dem Bildungsinstitution und Ni’lin Teachers Center in Ramallah, dem Dar Annadwa und der Alliance Française in bethlehem, Jericho Municipality, the Korea Palestine Center und in verschiedenen Schulen in Hebron, im Dar I´ssaf nashashibi for culture in Jerusalem und cinema Jenin, the Qattan Center for the Child in Gaza und in bis zu 17 verschiedenen palästinensischen Städten, Kleinstädten und Dörfern statt.

Mit der offiziellen Eröffnung in Ramallah am 10. November startete das Science Film Festival auch offiziell im Nahen osten. Die Produzentin Jacinta Madsen und der Moderator Kåre nielsen des dänischen bildungsprogramms “The nerd Academy” waren als Ehrengäste des Science Film Festival in Palästina eingeladen.


ThE PhILIPPINES 4TH EDITIONdIE PhILIPPINEN 4. AUSGABE

In the Philippines, the Science Film Festival reached 26 483 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Philippines in cooperation with the Department of Education, the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of energy and the Philippine Society of youth Science clubs. Core partners and supporters were the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity, Ablan Foundation, Xavier University and SM Supermalls.

Screenings were organized from November 4 to 29 in Manila at the Museo Pambata, National Library of the Philippines, Manila Ocean Park, Cornerstone, Quezon City Science Interactive Center, Felta Multimedia Center, Nido Science Discovery Center, Philippine Science Centrum, Mabuhay Temple, Muntinlupa High Business School and the U.S. Embassy. Furthermore, screenings were held in the provinces of Laguna, Cagayan, Ilocos, Davao, Pampanga and the American Corner in Baguoi, Batac, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Cagayan De Oro, Davao and Marawi.

ThAILANd 9TH EDITIONThAILANd 9. AUSGABE

In Thailand, the Science Film Festival reached 253 360 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Thailand, the Institute for the Promotion of Teaching Science and Technology and the National Science Museum with generous support from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Mekong Water Dialogues, the CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food and Deutsche Bahn.

In the United Arab Emirates, the Science Film Festival reached 850 visitors and was organized for the first time by the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee as part of the program of the Abu Dhabi Science Festival.

Screenings for the public were held from November 14 to 23 at the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Experiments related to the chosen films were offered in the activities program of the Abu Dhabi Science Festival and ran parallel to the Science Film Festival.

In den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten hat das Science Film Festival 850 Besucher erreicht und wurde zum ersten Mal vom 14. bis 23. The Science Film Festival in Vietnam reached 34 717 visitors and was organized by the Goethe-Institut Vietnam in cooperation with a&c (centre for Research Support and Development of culture), which is closely connected to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Core partners and supporters were the Ministry of Culture, GIZ, French Centre of Vinh and Nghe An, Siemens Vietnam, the International

Union for the Conservation of Nature, Mekong Water Dialogues and CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food. Media partners were VTV2 and VTV6.

Screenings were organized in the following 12 cities and provinces: Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Thai Binh, Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Tam Ky, Hoi An, Dak Lak, Hochiminh city, Da Lat and Bac Lieu. The volunteer network of A&C with over 100 contributors carried out the screenings and activities nationwide.

FILMS 2013FILME 2013The Science Film Festival presents a variety of films in the following four categories: Family Edutainment, Ecology and Environment, Natural Science, Life Science & Technology and Culture and History to serve all age groups, but with a particular focus on content for young audiences.

In 2013, the Science Film Festival received 264 films from 40 countries, of which a shortlist of 52 films from 24 countries comprised the international film selection for the programme in each of the festival host countries. A panel of local science education experts made the selections to curate the local festival programme of each country. All films are translated and synchronized into local languages to offer unrestricted access without language barriers.

Das Science Film Festival zeigt verschiedene Filme in vier Kategorien, die sich an alle Altersgruppen wendeten, aber mit ihren Inhalten besonders ein junges Publikum ansprachen. 2013 wurden für das Science Film Festival 264 Filme aus 40 Ländern eingereicht, deren engere internationale Filmauswahl 52 Filme aus 24 Ländern umfasste. Ein Ausschuss von Wissenschaftsbildungsexperten vor Ort traf die Auswahl, um das lokale Festivalprogramm für die Gastländer festzulegen. Alle Filme wurden in die örtlichen Sprachen übersetzt und synchronisiert.

a secretary of the green youth assembly, a group that has been working on the issue of natural resources, human rights, good governance, democracy and youth empowerment.

Nerea is currently working as the Natural Science focal point at the UNESCO office in Phnom Penh where she coordinates projects on conservation of natural resources, sustainable development and has assisted in the drafting of the

Cambodian policy on science, technology and innovation. born in bilbao (Spain), she has worked as a consultant on Eco design for the private and public sectors and as an environmental project officer in Spain, Germany and Belgium. She holds a BA degree in Environmental Science and a Masters’ in Environmental pollution and toxicology.

Kalyan was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and holds a Bachelor Degree in Economics from Norton University. She has worked as the youth Focal Point at the Khmer youth and Social Development office in Phnom Penh for nearly seven years.

Eugene Panji is a well-known film director who received his Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Jakarta Institute of arts in 1998. His first movie – “Cita Citaku Setinggi Tanah” – was produced in 2011 under a Creative Social Responsibility Programme,

which he not only created but also fully funded. The proceeds gained from the film are fully donated to children suffering from cancer in Indonesia. “Cita Citaku Setinggi Tanah” also received numerous award nominations in the apreasiasi Film Indonesia 2012 (aFI) and the Film Festival Indonesia, namely nominations for Best Director, Best Screen Play, Best Movie, Best Actor, Special Award and Best children cast. The last of which he was also able to win.

Since 2009 Verena Puspawardani has been coordinating the “Earth Hour” campaign in Indonesia. The “Earth Hour” campaign is conducted by the WWF and promotes energy efficiency and a generally green lifestyle. Verena’s passion lies in

growing the environmental awareness in Indonesia. Her main target age range in the operation is 18 to 35 as she believes in making bottom-up changes in small steps. In 2002 Verena furthermore received an honorary Bachelor in International Relations from the Universitas Indonesia. The aforementioned qualifications and her experience as a journalist have enriched and diversified her capabilities ranging from strategic communications, social marketing, and youth empowerment. These help her greatly in developing successful campaigns for WWF-Indonesia.

Marco Kusumawijaya is an architect and urbanist. He has been focusing his practices and thinking on sustainable issues in the last 10 years. He co-founded in 2010 Rujak Center for Urban Studies, where he is now its director, to help cities and regions

change towards sustainability. His involvement with the arts led him to be elected as chair and director of Jakarta arts council (Dewan Kesenian Jakarta) in the period of July 2006 to January 2010, that gave him an opportunity to also investigate ways arts could play a creative role in ecological transition. Rujak Center for Urban Studies just completed a facility called „Bumi Pemuda Rahayu“ sustainability learning center in South yogya to accommodate activities connecting arts and thoughts with practices of sustainability.

Amelia Hapsari is a documentary film maker who has previously worked in the United States, China and East Timor. Currently, she is the head of In-Docs, an organization that promotes and produces documentary films in Indonesia.

She conducts documentary workshops, productions and exhibitions, mostly in communities that have little or no access to quality films. Her film “Fight Like Ahok” has recently won an award for the best short Indonesian documentary. her east Timor production “The youth Parliament” furthermore won the Next Generation Prize at Prix Jeunesse Festival 2012, Munich.

Beruchiya Hannah Hutagalung often called “Biya” is a young girl, currently attending a Calvin Christian elementary school. Her greatest passion since the age of six is Ballet. She furthermore is an active member of the “Jakarta oratorio choir

Singing Children”. While also engaged in playing the piano she came 2nd in the English Speech contest held by the Ministry of youth and Sports in May 2013.

TRISA PERMATA SuhAdI

Trisa Permata is a 15-year old graduate from Junior high School. She was part of the past three Science Film Festivals. Her passions include music, science and movies; while documentaries concerning the sciences and the environment take

precedence over all. She takes currently part in the SMAK 3 Penabur science programmes, showing a specific interest in medicine. Trisa spends her free time mostly learning new instruments, among them the piano and the flute.

Trisa Permata ist 15 Jahre alt und hat gerade Junior high School beendet. Sie war von 2011 bis 2013 Jurorin für das Science Film Festival. Linda Abraham-Silver works for Abu Dhabi’s Technology Development Committee on the creation and growth of informal science education initiatives in support of the Emirate’s Economic Vision 2030. She spent 8 years as President

and CEO of the Great Lakes Science Center and more than 10 years heading the Education and Guest Relations departments of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and its family of 5 museums. She has lectured and published on numerous subjects including science education, museum leadership, and the role science centers and museums play in workforce development. A California native, she has worked with the American Association for the advancement of Science (aaaS), the national Science Foundation (nSF) and the national aeronautics and Space association (naSa) on projects to increase the public understanding of science. She holds a BA degree from UCLA, an MBA from Pepperdine University and a doctoral degree from USC.

Associate responsible for running several successful events such as 4 editions of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, Shakira, Amr Diab, Madonna, just to name a few. This is his third year working on the Abu Dhabi Science Festival as a Project Associate and Content Manager.

Neama Al Marshoudi has been working as Manager for Content at the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee since the first edition of the Abu Dhabi Science Festival (aDSF) which was held in 2011. She continues her work on this

initiative which is now entering its third year. In her role, she is responsible for all scientific and educational content of the ADSF. Neama’s interest in science festivals and her passion for science promotion comes from her background as a science teacher. Prior to launching her career in informal science education, Neama worked for 11 years as both a classroom science teacher, instilling an excitement for science in her students as well as a Master Science Teacher, providing professional development for her colleagues in the field. Her move into informal science education stems from her desire to impact a broader number of students across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, coupled with her belief that inspiring curiosity and enthusiasm for science in children will result in the country’s sustained interest in science and technology.

During her teaching career, Neama was nominated by her students and received the “Excellence Award for Teaching” from the Abu Dhabi Educational Zone. This award is one she is very proud of because it was bestowed upon her by H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education & Scientific Research. Neama holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education from United Arab Emirates University.

Als Lehrerin verstand sie es, das Interesse ihrer Schüler an Naturwissenschaften zu wecken, und als Ausbilderin stand sie ihren Kollegen bei ihrer beruflichen Weiterentwicklung im Bereich der Vermittlung von naturwissenschaftlichen Themen zur Seite. Da sie eine größere Anzahl von Schülern mit ihrer Arbeit erreichen wollte und sie davon überzeugt ist, dass die Neugier und das Interesse an Naturwissenschaften bei Kindern geweckt werden muss, um ein Interesse an Naturwissenschaften und Technik im Land zu erzeugen, entschied sie sich, ihre Arbeit im Bereich der informellen Vermittlung von Naturwissenschaften zu konzentrieren.

Während ihrer Arbeit als Lehrerin wurde Neama von ihren Schülern mit dem “Excellence Award for Teaching” nominiert, den sie schließlich von der Abu Dhabi Educational Zone erhielt. assistant Manager at the children’s Museum Jordan. She started working with the children’s’ Museum Jordan in 2008 and held positions in the Communications and Education Departments. As part of her work she has run the Watch your Waste e-Museum project, one of the children’s Museum projects.

Ayah is a curious learner who is interested in Science and Art. Upward, forward and beyond the conventional processes of education, design, and management. younis has worked with children and young audiences through a series of workshops, events, and projects; from which to mention are: Biennial for a Plot; a parallel workshop for youth for Sharjah Art Biennial 2011, 3rd International Sharjah Biennial for Children’s Art.

Hassan is a self-taught artist, designer, animator, film director and writer. He started his career as a Graphics Designer and went on to write and direct public service filmlets, animation shorts, and Malaysia’s first animation feature film. He

has won awards for his first live-action filmlet for an Anti-Drug Campaign, Best Visual Effects for a feature film and a best Documentary Jury award for his first documentary. Hassan has also co-written the Malaysian Cinema segment for the book, “Being and Becoming: The Cinemas of Asia”. He has presented papers on film and animation in local Universities, and overseas. He is a creative writer for the National Theatre and presents critical papers for local and foreign publications, and most frequently for the Internet. He sits on various advisory panels for the education and film industry and is also a frequent jury member for film festivals (including having done a stint at the 1998 Pyongyang International Film Festival). he conducts workshops locally and overseas, and also teaches at some of the top design, animation and film colleges in Malaysia. He is the President of the Animation Society of Malaysia, and is currently compiling material for writing books on Malaysian animation and cinema.

She is currently the Chief Science Research Specialist of the S&T Manpower Education Research and Promotions Division of the Science Education Institute - Department of Science and Technology (SeI-DoST), taking charge of science education research, S&T culture development, and information systems and IT infrastructure development works in the agency. She pursued a graduate degree in Development Communication at the UP Open University. Armed with long years of exposure to the science discipline and her ever-growing interest in communication and science education, she continues to design and implement innovative programs that would integrate new technologies and media to advocacy work.

Maricel is an AB Communication Arts graduate of the Ateneo de Manila University. She has been working in the field of social development since the early 90s. She worked, amongst others, as one of the producers of Negosiyete, one of the

first educational shows on TV in the 90s, as an educational coordinator and special projects officer for Stairway Foundation, a rehabilitation center for abused street children using arts and nature as a form of therapy and as a public relations officer for a health media campaign with ReachOut Foundation International. In 1999, Maricel joined Museo Pambata as one of the volunteer facilitator/volunteer for a nationwide program crafted by educators from various sectors implemented by Museo Pambata, entitled “Breaking Barriers: Building Peace and Love for Country”. In 2007, she became the Executive Director of the Museo Pambata.

Presently a graduate student in the Master in Development Communication program of the University of the Philippines Open University, he also writes a blog (servedinsneakers.wordpress.com), serves in the couples for Christ – Singles for Christ ministry as a Sector Head and a member of its Sector Music Ministry. Script/best Subtitle Team”. afterwards, she entered hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, one of the most prestigious high schools in Vietnam. Besides her school work, she has participated in a range of meaningful extracurricular activities, including her 3-year-long stint raising money to help patients in National Institute of Hematology and Blood by exhibiting her photographs for donors, and her successful coining the initial script of “The Lion King: Musical” (the first ever broadway musical produced in Vietnam).

The cost to wildlife is horrendous, with thousands of seabirds and marine animals wounded or killed by plastic debris each year. Nick received his Master of Arts degree in cinema Studies at the new york University and his Certificate in Film in Paris, France. He has won numerous awards for his gritty documentaries and personal films. Celebrating his 30th anniversary

as a documentary filmmaker this year, he has made films that recorded how Filipino society has transformed itself, with films about social concerns. Deocampo has received international academic honours from prestigious academic institutions. He has written several books on cinema including his on-going work on a five-volume history of cinema in the Philippines, from which is based his ten-hour documentary film series on the same subject.

Anek is an executive producer for the Thai PBS programme “Hot Short Films”, which showcases on a weekly basis original work by young independent Thai filmmakers and students. His background focuses on all aspects of scriptwriting, directing and

editing for television, especially in the documentary format. He graduated from Sri Nakharinwirot University with a Major in English and Minor in Political Science.

Anek ist ein leitender Produzent für das Thai PBS Programm “Hot Short Films”, welches wöchentlich originale Werke von jungen unabgängigen thailändischen Filmemachern und Studenten zeigt. Sein Hintergrund liegt sowohl beim Drehbuchschreiben, Regieführen und in der Redaktion für das Fernsehen, insbesondere im Dokumentarbereich. ACTIVITIESAKTIVITÄTEN

An integral part of the Science Film Festival is the effort to provide activities that accompany the film screenings. In order to facilitate the young audience in fully appreciating some of the themes explored, there are fun experiments or hands-on learning games offered in relation to the films at screenings, which aim to further make the content accessible.

In workshops, organizers from participating countries exchange and develop ideas on how to incorporate entertaining and educational activities which complement the films. Through this interdisciplinary approach, which is a key strength of the Science Film Festival, the event seeks to provide an effective and enjoyable learning environment.

From September 5 to 6, 2013, the international Science Film Festival Exchange and Activities Workshop took place in Bangkok, Thailand, with festival organizers from all 11 countries. The objective of the workshop was to foster an exchange between organizers of the Science Film Festival from the different nations and to consolidate activity ideas as guideline for all organizers.

Ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Science Film Festival ist die Bemühung begleitende Aktivitäten zu den Filmvorführungen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Um beim jungen Publikum das vollständige Verständnis der erforschter Themen zu gewinnen, werden unterhaltsame Experimente oder Lernspiele angeboten, die einen Bezug zu den vorgeführten Filmen haben und dadurch den inhaltlichen Zugang erleichtern

In den Workshops entwickeln und tauschen die Organisatoren der beteiligten Länder Ideen aus, auf welchen Wegen unterhaltsame und wissenschaftliche Aktivitäten zu den Filmen eingebunden werden können. Durch diesen interdisziplinären Zugang, eine Hauptstärke des Science Film Festival, versucht die Veranstaltung eine wirksame und angenehme Lernatmosphäre zu schaffen.

Vom 5. bis 6. September 2013 fand der internationale Workshop für den Austausch und Aktivitäten des Science Film Festival in Bangkok, Thailand mit den Organisatoren aller 11 Länder statt. Das Ziel des Workshops war es die Organisatoren aus verschiedenen Nationen miteinander zu vernetzen, um neue Impulse für das Festival und Ideen zu den Aktivitäten zu entwickeln, als allgemeine Richtlinie für alle Organisatoren.

Abu dhAbI SCIENCE FESTIVAL

Under the patronage of H.H. General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Abu Dhabi Science Festival is a globally awarded strategic initiative organized by the Abu Dhabi Technology Development Committee. It aims to inspire the Nation’s youth with science-related hands-on activities and is part of a wider strategy to build a talent base in Science, Technology and Innovation in the UAE.

Unter der Schirmherrschaft von H.H. SCIENCE dAyS PALESTINE

On 12 November, 2013, the Qattan Centre for the Child launched the Science Days Palestine 2013 in its premises in Gaza. The festival, which focused on “Energy and Sustainability”, was organised in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the Institut Français.

The programme, which ran for three days, included screenings of scientific films, scientific experiments on energy and sustainability and storytelling activities associated with space science and astronomy. More than 1 200 children from UNRWA schools participated. Science Days Palestine activities were also implemented at the library of the Al Maghazi Community Rehabilitation Society (McRS) as part of the “Partnership for Development” project co-funded by Drosos Foundation (Switzerland).

Am 12.November 2013 fanden erstmalig die Science Days Palestine in den Räumlichkeiten des Qattan Center for the Child statt. Das Festival drehte sich rund um „Energie & Nachhaltigkeit“ und wurde in Kooperation mit dem Goethe-Institut und dem Institut Français organisiert.

Das dreitägige Programm umfasste Wissenschaftsfilme, wissenschaftliche Experimente sowie Aktivitäten zu Geschichten über Raumforschung und Astronomie. ChASING ICE

The film tells the story of one man’s mission to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. With a band of young adventurers in tow, Balog began deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras across the brutal Arctic to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breath-taking rate.

ASEAN CO-PROduCTION I GOT IT!

In follow up to the efforts of the Science Film Festival in disseminating and encouraging access to knowledge in Southeast Asia as a region, the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with state and public broadcasters in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam have united efforts since 2009 on the co-production of a unique regional knowledge TV-series for children titled “I got It!”.

The series continues to gather accolades with special nominations from the asia-Pacifi c broadcasting Union and aneK TV awards in the Philippines, as well as being selected as fi nalist in the PRIX JeUneSSe 2014. The project aims at sustainable development of locally produced science & factual programmes, by combining a long term strategy of progressive capacity building measures with actual production, aiming at an international standard and embracing cross-border cooperation and intercultural exchange. The fi fth season of “I got It!” is being produced in 2014.

MEKONG WATER dIALOGuES

In cooperation with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and the CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food within the Mekong Water Dialogues project, panel screenings of the film Mekong: Vietnam the Delta by Douglas Varchol were organized by the Goethe-Institut and partners in Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam. Environmental experts and students gathered to discuss the complex issues surrounding hydropower energy in the Greater Mekong Basin. The screenings reached over 2 500 viewers and the Goethe-Institut conducted an in-depth study of the audience views on the issue.

In Kooperation mit der International Union for the Conversation of Nature und dem CGIAR Challenge Programme on Water and Food innerhalb des Mekong Water Dialogues Projektes wurden Filmvorführungen und Podiumsdiskussionen zu dem Film Mekong: Vietnam the Delta von Douglas Varchol vom Goethe-Institut und Partnern in Kambodscha, Myanmar und Vietnam organisiert. EVALuATIONEVALUATIONAn extensive evaluation of the Science Film Festival visitors in 2013 was conducted with a comprehensive survey of 17 507 questionnaires filled out impartially by indiscriminate audiences from venues in all participating countries and evaluated by an unbiased party. The sources of the individual countries number as follows: cambodia (2 956), Indonesia (3 146), Jordan (369), Palestine (64), the Philippines (3 165), Thailand (5 136), the United arab emirates (199) and Vietnam (2 472). The results of this study empirically put forward the effectiveness of the Science Film Festival:

Die umfangreiche Evaluation zu den Besucherzahlen des Science Film Festival 2013 wurde mit einer umfassenden Erhebung mit 17.507 Fragebögen durchgeführt, welche unvoreingenommen von zufällig ausgewählten Zuschauerkreisen in den Veranstaltungsorten in allen beteiligten Ländern ausgefüllt wurden und durch eine unbefangene Partei ausgewertet wurden. Die Quellen der einzelnen Länder sind: Kambodscha (2.956), Indonesien (3.146), Jordanien (369), Palästina (64), die Philippinen (3.165), Thailand (5.136), die Vereinigten arabischen emirate (199) und Vietnam (2.472). Die ergebnisse der umfangreichen Studie zeigen empirisch die Wirksamkeit des Science Film Festival:

PREVIEW 2014AUSBLICK 2014In 2014, the Science Film Festival turns to the future and showcases the technologies that will shape tomorrow’s world. Scientific discovery and technological innovation are accelerating at an unprecedented speed and the media is constantly injecting our vocabulary with new words such as gentech, nanotech, synthetic biology, graphene, algae fuel, quantum computers and other concepts, which used to be the domain of expert researchers but are soon to have an impact on our daily lives and the world we live in.

In such rapidly changing times it can be a challenge to keep up with the exciting scientific and technological developments. What promises and what dangers do these breakthroughs hold in store for us? To help make sense of the impending changes we can expect in the next ten years and beyond, the Science Film Festival seeks to explore the broad spectrum of innovative technologies at the cutting edge of science though exemplary film and television content from around the world and our trademark programme of activities.

2014 wendet sich das Science Film Festival der Zukunft zu und zeigt, welche Technologien die Welt von morgen prägen werden. Wissenschaftliche Entdeckungen und technologische Innovationen werden mit noch nie da gewesener Geschwindigkeit beschleunigt. Die Medien erweitern unser Vokabular konstant mit Wörtern wie Gentechnik, Nanotechnik, synthetische Biologie, Graphen, Algenkraftstoff, Quantum Computern und anderen Konzepten, die einmal das Gebiet von Expertenwissenschaftlern waren, aber bald Einfluss auf unser tägliches Leben und die Welt, in der wir leben, haben werden.

In solch schnell wechselnden Zeiten kann es zu einer Herausforderung werden, mit den spannenden wissenschaftlichen und technologischen Entwicklungen mitzuhalten. Welche Versprechungen und welche Gefahren bergen diese Durchbrüche für uns? Um eine einsicht in die uns in den nächsten zehn Jahren bevorstehenden Veränderungen zu gewinnen, versucht das Science Film Festival ein breites Spektrum innovativer Technologien in beispielhaften internationalen Film- und Fernsehbeiträgen mit einem ausgewählten Programm an Aktivitäten zu verbinden.
