I nternational Programs In a special presentation organized by Lilly Library 'Director William Cagle, South African Nobel Prize- winning author Nadine Gordimer read selected passages from her latest novel, None to Accompany Me. The October 22 event, held in the Fine Arts auditorium, drew a capacity audience. Gordimer came to the Bloomington campus at the invitation of the Lilly Library, home of the Gordimer collection-one of the library's most important -recent acquisitions-containing the author's manuscripts, research notebooks, speeches, articles, and personal correspondence. Pictured with Nadine Gordimer are (left to right) her IV hosts, Lilly Library Director William Cagle and International Programs Dean Patrick O'Meara. As Halloween approached, the Leo R. Dowling International Center of the Office of International Services held its second annual Pumpkin-Carving Party for the children of IV's international students. This year, sixty to seventy international students and their families took part in the October 21 event, carving all of the forty pumpkins donated to the Center by Mr. D's Food Mar- kets. For many participants from IVB's international community, the occasion provided their first opportunity to undertake the popular custom of carving Halloween jack-'o-lanterns. Hosting the event were Dowling Center Associate Coordinator Scott Taylor and Office Manager Rufina Ong, an international student from Singapore. On October 6, the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures held its fall reception. A high point of the opening ceremonies was the presentation of "The Haddawi Award for Excellence in Arabic" by Bloomington physician Dr. Rajih Haddawi to graduate students Susan French and Mandy McClure. Shown fol- lowing the presentation are (left to right) Dr. Haddawi, Fedwa Malti-Douglas, Chair of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, and Dr. Hormoz Broumand, Board Mem- ber of the Society for the Promotion of Persian Culture. Dean of the School of Information Studies for Africa atAddis Adaba University, Ethiopia, came on a two-dayvisit to inquire about U.S. educational models, withparticular interest in the establishment of a Ph.D.program in information science at his university. He metwith School of Library and Information Science DeanJames Neal, Instructional Systems Technology ChairThomas Schwen, Dean of Education Donald Warren,and International Programs Dean Patrick O'Meara. DeanBirru (pictured, center) also conferred with AfricanStudies Program Director Brian Winchester (right) andAssistant Director Virginia Delancey (left).

Staff of the Office of International Services inBloomington took time out last month to help MarthaWailes, Assistant Director of Faculty Visa Services,celebrate fifteen years on the Bloomington campus bypresenting her with a special trophy attesting to heruncanny ability for resolving difficult immigration cases.Martha, an avid marathon runner, was also honored byIU Men's Track Coach Sam Bell, who presented her withthe Nick Carter Official of the Year Award 1994 inappreciation of her officiating at track events.

The South African Poster Exhibition and FilmSeries, an event jointly sponsored by IU's Black FilmCenter/Archive, the University Libraries, and the AfricanStudies Program, opened with IUB and IUPUI screeningsof the fJlm Nelson Mandela: Prisoner to President. TheNovember 1 and 2 events featured a reception honoringexhibit creator and independent fJlmmaker Peter Davis,as well as an IUB performance by members of the IUAfro-American Choral Ensemble, under the direction ofDr. James Mumford. Other fJlms in the series are TheWhite Laager, Generations of Resistance, and In DarkestHollywood. Staff of the Office of International Services in Bloomington took time out last month to help Martha Wailes, Assistant Director of Faculty Visa Services, celebrate fifteen years on the Bloomington campus by presenting her with a special trophy attesting to her uncanny ability for resolving difficult immigration cases. Martha, an avid marathon runner, was also honored by IU Men's Track Coach Sam Bell, who presented her with the Nick Carter Official of the Year Award 1994 in appreciation of her officiating at track events.
