Living and working in the wonderful Whitsundays is something we at Tourism Whitsundays do not take for granted!

Our role is to promote this amazing region to the world and we do this through working with industry partners like you.

The Whitsundays offers a great diversity of attractions and experiences with the stunning backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef and 74 island wonders.

We believe that the Whitsundays offers, quite simply, the best Great Barrier Reef experience there is, being situated right in the heart of this vast living structure, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The Great Barrier Reef hosts one third of the world’s coral species and is home to more than 1,500 species of fish as well as turtles, whales, dolphins, dugongs, reef sharks, manta rays and giant clams.

The reef also protects the Coral Sea that surrounds the Whitsunday islands and mainland, creating an aquatic playground in which visitors can swim, sail, snorkel and scuba dive in safe, calm waters.

Heart Reef, off the Whitsunday coast, is a coral reef that has formed naturally into the shape of a heart and has become a well-known landmark from the air.

The Whitsunday region also boasts one of the best beaches in Australia – some say the world – the 7km long Whitehaven Beach, made of pure white 98% silica sand.

Five world-class island resorts currently operate in the Whitsundays, including Hamilton Island, InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, Daydream Island Resort and Elysian Retreat and Palm Bay Resort on Long Island and Camp Island.

On the Whitsunday mainland, visitors can enjoy the vibrant, cosmopolitan vibe of Airlie Beach or the serenity of Bowen’s

THE WORLD HERITAGE-LISTED GREAT BARRIER REEF IS ONE OF THE SEVEN NATURAL WONDERS OF THE WORLD AND THE LARGEST LIVING STRUCTURE, VISIBLE FROM OUTER SPACE AND STRETCHING OVER 2000KM IN LENGTH ALONG THE QUEENSLAND COAST IN AUSTRALIA. THE WHITSUNDAYS REGION IS IDEALLY LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF, AND IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO EXPLORE THIS AQUATIC WONDERLAND.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW The ‘outer’ Great Barrier Reef is around 40 nautical miles

off the Whitsunday coast, about 2 hours’ boat ride. The Whitsunday Islands and coast all have fringing reefs

very close to the shore, with abundant marine life to explore. Each year between June and September, humpback

whales can be commonly seen in the protected waters of the Whitsunday Islands, during their annual migration.

A large variety of day and overnight tours depart the Whitsunday coast and islands and travel to the Reef

every day. Local scuba dive companies cater for every skill level from novice to dive master.

MORE THAN JUST FISH AND CORALThe Great Barrier Reef is home to a stunning array of animals, from microscopic plankton to whales weighing more than 100 tonnes. More than just fish and coral, the Great Barrier Reef supports:

1625 species of fish, including 1400 coral reef species More than 3000 species of molluscs (shells) 630 species of echinoderm (starfish, sea urchins) 14 breeding species of sea snakes 215 species of birds including 22 species of seabirds and

32 species of shorebirds Six of the world’s seven species of marine turtle 30 species of whales and dolphins One of the world’s most important dugong populations 133 species of sharks and rays

WAYS TO EXPLORE THE REEF Swim, snorkel and scuba dive with the colourful marine

life and discover an unforgettable underwater world on one of the many day or overnight tours.

Take a scenic flight over the Reef and see its incredible expanse from above, including the romantic Heart Reef.

Set sail and discover the many excellent snorkel and dive spots in the Whitsundays.

Camp overnight on a pontoon and spend the night under the stars in the middle of the Reef.

IN THE HEART OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

HEART REEFThe magical, naturally formed Heart Reef is located in the Great Barrier Reef in the Whitsundays, and this stunning composition of coral is best viewed from the air. Take a seaplane or helicopter flight to admire this beautiful sight, or surprise a loved one with the ultimate gesture over the region’s most romantic natural icon. Many tour companies will combine a scenic flight over Heart Reef with other breathtaking spots in the Whitsundays, including Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet.

Heart Reef was discovered in 1975 by one of Air Whitsunday’s pilots and is now an internationally-recognised attraction of the Whitsundays and the site of many proposals and declarations of love over the years. If planning something special during your flight, let your pilot know your plans and they’ll be able to help you with some extra flight time over the famous icon.

CONSERVATION AND ECOTOURISMThe local tourism industry is very conscious of educating visitors to our beautiful region about how to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef, while ensuring there is no negative impact on the environment. All boat and tour operators provide educational information about the Reef and local marine life, and warn visitors to ‘look, not touch’ when participating in snorkelling and diving activities.

Australia’s Eco Certification program recognises tourism operators who provide genuine environmentally friendly tours, attraction and accommodation products. Operators are assessed on their economic, environmental and social sustainability and ecotourism principles such as business ethics, responsible marketing, contribution to conservation and working with communities.

There are three levels of accreditation available: Nature Tourism, Ecotourism and Advanced Ecotourism. Look for the logo when considering which operator to choose.

Accommodation varies from tour to tour and includes the option of sleeping on deck under the stars, bunking in with your friends in a shared birth, indulging in a comfortable cabin with your own en-suite bathroom, or going ashore and sleeping in tents on one of the many uninhabited islands.

Whatever guests choose, they will enjoy exhilarating sailing, swimming in clear, clean water, snorkelling amongst iridescent coral and getting up close and personal with colourful tropical fish, all within the most pristine large reef system in the world, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

WHO CAN GO BAREBOATING?Bareboating is easy – anyone can do it! The protected waters of the Whitsundays are recognised as amongst the safest in the world and perfect for the beginner sailor all the way up to experienced, professional sailors. Although some sailing experience is an advantage, no licence is required to charter a yacht, catamaran or motor cruiser and a comprehensive safety briefing will be provided to ensure you feel comfortable with the vessel. Alternatively, choose to take an experienced sail guide with you for as long as you like. All vessels come fully equipped with the essentials for extended cruising including showers, toilets, galleys (kitchens), dinghy for adventures onshore, safety and navigational equipment.

WHY SHOULD I GO BAREBOATING?The beauty of cruising around the Whitsundays and skippering yourself is that you choose where you go. Drop anchor in a secluded anchorage, explore deserted beaches and snorkel the many fringing reefs. Feel the freedom of chartering your own vessel and be the captain of your own adventure.

BAREBOATINGTHE WHITSUNDAYS IS THE ULTIMATE PLACE IN AUSTRALIA TO GO BAREBOATING. There is no better way to experience the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands than on a boat. Why not set your own course around the stunning waters of the islands by chartering your own ‘bareboat’ (without a crew) - meaning you, your family and friends are the crew!

Enjoy the freedom of choosing your own route and going at your own pace as you discover cascading waterfalls on the islands and are the first to leave footprints on untouched beaches each morning. Have fun with the paddleboards, scuba diving, snorkelling and fishing, all at your leisure. The bareboat team will help you plan an itinerary perfectly tailored to your needs as you carve out your own adventure amongst the islands, mostly uninhabited National Parks. With more than 40 anchorages, there is always a tranquil spot to lose yourself at night under the endless expanse of starlit sky.

You can opt for a sailing yacht or a power cruiser and you will receive a detailed and comprehensive briefing before you start. Vessels are equipped with all the necessities for a comfortable stay - all you need to bring is your sunscreen, swimming gear, hat and sunglasses…
