Living and working in the wonderful Whitsundays is something we at Tourism Whitsundays do not take for granted!

Our role is to promote this amazing region to the world and we do this through working with industry partners like you.

The Whitsundays offers a great diversity of attractions and experiences with the stunning backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef and 74 island wonders.

We believe that the Whitsundays offers, quite simply, the best Great Barrier Reef experience there is, being situated right in the heart of this vast living structure, which is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The Great Barrier Reef hosts one third of the world’s coral species and is home to more than 1,500 species of fish as well as turtles, whales, dolphins, dugongs, reef sharks, manta rays and giant clams.

The reef also protects the Coral Sea that surrounds the Whitsunday islands and mainland, creating an aquatic playground in which visitors can swim, sail, snorkel and scuba dive in safe, calm waters.

Heart Reef, off the Whitsunday coast, is a coral reef that has formed naturally into the shape of a heart and has become a well-known landmark from the air.

The Whitsunday region also boasts one of the best beaches in Australia – some say the world – the 7km long Whitehaven Beach, made of pure white 98% silica sand.

Five world-class island resorts currently operate in the Whitsundays, including Hamilton Island, InterContinental Hayman Island Resort, Daydream Island Resort and Elysian Retreat and Palm Bay Resort on Long Island and Camp Island.

By Air – There are two airports which service the Whitsundays daily, Whitsunday Coast Airport (PPP) in Proserpine, and Great Barrier Reef Airport (HTI) on Hamilton Island.

Whitsunday Coast Airport is located in Proserpine and is just a thirty minute drive from Airlie Beach. Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Tiger Air currently offer flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne for domestic and international flight connections.

By Road – The Bruce Highway is the major road linking Queensland’s coastal cities and towns, and runs through Proserpine and Bowen, with Airlie Beach located approximately 20 minutes drive off the Bruce Highway at Proserpine. Major national coach operators include the Whitsundays in their regular scheduled services from all major centres along the east coast of Australia.

By Rail – Queensland Rail services include the Spirit of Queensland, linking Proserpine to all the major destinations from Cairns to Brisbane and beyond to Sydney and Melbourne. Coach transfers between Proserpine and Airlie Beach are included in rail travel passes.

ACCESSThe Whitsundays is located along Queensland’s central coast in north-eastern Australia, approximately 1120km north of Brisbane and 630km south of Cairns. Getting to the Whitsundays is easy, whether from across the other side of the world, or driving from nearby.

GETTING AROUNDOnce you arrive in the Whitsundays, there are plenty of ways to get around, including car, bus, taxi and ferry. All island resorts are connected to the mainland via daily ferry services that depart from Port of Airlie and Shute Harbour. Air transfers by helicopter, seaplane or light aircraft are also available. Getting around Airlie Beach on foot is quite easy due to the flat and very scenic boardwalk that curves around the foreshore of Airlie Beach to Abell Point Marina and through to Cannonvale Beach.

HIRE CARSAll major car rental companies are represented at Whitsunday Coast Airport and the main street in Airlie Beach.

Rainforest-covered mountains surround the winding road which leads to Shute Harbour, with multiple Conway National Park walks departing at various points in the area.

WEATHERThe Whitsundays enjoys a tropical climate of hot summers, warm winters and bright spring and autumn days. Average daily temperatures range from around 22 to 23 degrees celsius in the winter months of June and July, and up to 29 to 30 degreescelsius in December and January during the height of summer. Water temperatures remain a welcoming 25 degrees celsius most of the year round. The tropical wet season occurs during January to March when days can be steamy and the summer heat is often broken by tropical showers.

STINGER INFORMATIONMarine stingers may be present in the waters of tropical Queensland year round, with the higher risk season during October – May. During this period, jellyfish are prevalent in the waters around the mainland, islands and have occasionally been found out on the reef. Taking simple precautions to minimise risk you can safely and comfortably swim in all parts of the Whitsundays region. BE CROC WISEEstuarine crocodiles (or ‘salties’) inhabit the mainland estuaries and may be present in Whitsunday waters. Be croc-wise at all times and never take unnecessary risks. CANNONVALE Just minutes from the tourist hot spot of Airlie Beach, Cannonvale is a quiet, peaceful beachside community, conveniently close to all the Whitsundays has to offer. A perfect place to base the family, with a range of accommodation on offer, Cannonvale’s beautiful sheltered beach is perfect for splashing about with the kids. As the main residential centre in the area, the town has good shopping facilities as well as cafes, banks and a post office. Launch your boat at the Volunteer Marine Rescue Club boat ramp on Altmann Avenue for a spot of fishing in the bays.

COLLINSVILLE Collinsville is a friendly country town known for its historic mining attractions, with one of the main highlights a visit to the Coalface Experience Museum and Pit Pony Experience. There’s a small air strip for recreational planes, a large dam for fishing and watersports and excellent outback four-wheel-driving – there’s also free RV parking!

CAPE GLOUCESTER Cape Gloucester and its sister town Dingo Beach are situated at the top end of the Whitsundays, accessible by road 45 minutes north of Airlie Beach. With endless horizons

and picturesque water views dotted with islands, Cape Gloucester and Dingo Beach are perfect for lazy days spent beachcombing or exploring the calm bays in a kayak or stand-up-paddle board, or putting in a long day fishing. Travellers can stop for a bite to eat and a refreshing beverage at one of the two resorts at Cape Gloucester or the Dingo Beach Pub Motel. Other accommodation in the area includes a caravan park and private holiday homes.

PROSERPINE Just 20 minutes inland from Airlie Beach, Proserpine is a charming Aussie town offering traditional country hospitality. Sugar cane and cattle grazing have been the economic mainstays in the town since the late 1800s and the eerie glow of cane fires can still be seen at night from late June onwards, a spectacular sight to catch on camera.

The main street’s well preserved ‘art deco’ shop architecture is a reminder of how life used to be, with boutique shopping and hidden gems located in the laneways off the main street. There is a good range of accommodation in Proserpine from caravan parks to motels conveniently located on the Bruce Highway.

Camp Island is the second most northerly island in the Whitsundays group located 3 km off shore from Elliot River in Abbott Bay, 10 km south of Cape Upstart. Access is via Elliot River near Guthalungra. Located 50 km north of Bowen, it is accessible by helicopter in under 30 minutes from Hamilton Island or Whitsunday Coast Airport. Alternatively a 90 min private bus transfer can be organised from Proserpine airport to Elliot River where you will be transferred by one of the resort boats to the Island.

Although some sailing experience is an advantage, no licence is required to charter a yacht, catamaran or motor cruiser and a comprehensive safety briefing will be provided to ensure you feel comfortable with the vessel. Alternatively, choose to take an experienced sail guide with you for as long as you like. All vessels come fully equipped with the essentials for extended cruising including showers, toilets, galleys (kitchens), dinghy for adventures onshore, safety and navigational equipment.

Minimum charter period is 5 nights. A minimum security deposit of $600 per vessel is required within 7 days of booking confirmation. Full payment of your holiday must be made no later than 60 days prior to travel. Queensland Yacht Charters requires a damage waiver of between $250 and $550 to be paid direct on commencement of the charter along with a signed credit card authority to apply a bond of between $550 and $2000 depending on vessel size. A Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Fee of $32 per person.

Suggested Sailing ItineraryDay 1

� Pick up your bareboat and do a 4 hour sailing induction with a qualified skipper before setting sail on your adventure.

� Find a protected bay (perhaps Nara Inlet, Hook Island) to anchor for the afternoon.

� Watch the sunset, then eat dinner under a million stars and spend the night on-board.

Day 2 � Wake up in paradise! � Sail to spectacular fringing coral reefs for snorkelling on

Hayman and Hook Island, then lunch on a deserted sand cay.

Day 3 � Sail south to world famous Whitehaven Beach, where you

might jump on land and do a bushwalk to the stunning Hill Inlet lookout, or just laze on the beach.

Day 4 � Kayak to Chalkie’s Beach, snorkel and explore

surrounding coves then spend the afternoon fishing as you cruise to find your next protected cove to spend the night. Fresh fish for dinner anyone?

Day 5 � Maybe you’ll drop into an island resort today for lunch…

or maybe you’ll just keep exploring fringing coral reef or bushwalks on deserted islands and sunbathing on the top deck!
