With a history dating back over 175 years, our four Colleges create a beautiful 54-acre parkland campus, with classic listed buildings alongside modern, cutting-edge facilities.

Our campus provides a close-knit community feel for our studentsAs a student at Roehampton, you will belong to one of our four Colleges. Your College will become your local community. Each College has a thriving social scene and its own sports teams; they help create a healthy sense of competition and College pride.

If you choose to live on campus you will automatically become a student of the College in which your accommodation is based. If you don’t live on campus, you will be allocated to the College associated with your subject.

FacilitiesOur library houses 1,200 study spaces and hundreds of thousands of books and research materials across nearly 8,000 metres of shelving and five floors. Digby Stuart College

College history and ethosDigby Stuart College owes its existence to the Society of the Sacred Heart, an order of French Sisters who came to England in 1842. The rich history of the Society in the education of women, and the dedication to issues of social justice and equality, now provides Digby College with a common concern for fostering a kind and loving community, where we welcome all students.

Digby Stuart todayDigby is the largest of the four Colleges at Roehampton, and home to four academic departments: English and Creative Writing, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Drama, Theatre and Performance. Digby strives to give everyone a sense of belonging, in a community that cares about individuals.

There is a regular programme of social activities and events to appeal to all tastes, such as the annual lecture and a summer strawberry tea. The chaplaincy base, which organises a lunch every Tuesday, is also located at Digby.

The elected student leaders are an important voice in how business is conducted at the College and help them to be responsive and relevant.

Froebel College

College history and ethosFroebel College is one of the oldest higher education establishments in the UK, having been founded in 1892. The College takes its name from Friedrich Froebel, a German educational pioneer, who encouraged the use of play as an important part of a child’s development.

Froebel todayThe focus on education continues to this day, with the School of Education being a major part of the College and a leading centre for Initial Teacher Education. The internationally renowned Department of Dance is also resident at Froebel College, with its superb facilities and modern dance studios. Froebel is also home to the Roehampton Students’ Union, the Union Bar and the Gym.

Froebel has an extensive calendar of social events including a formal Freshers’ Welcome Dinner, the College Winter Dinner, a summer celebration and many other smaller on-campus or off-campus events organised by our student leaders.

Southlands College

College history and ethosSouthlands was founded in 1872 to train women to teach in Methodist schools in some of the poorest parts of Britain. The College today builds on its history by encouraging young people to develop strong values and to grow as future leaders for their communities.

Southlands todayLife at Southlands is busy and diverse. There is an exciting annual calendar of events, including termly dinners, a fireworks party, music gala dinner, Southlands Shindig (our summer fête) and College boat party. The large social space is a café during the day and each evening transforms into a cinema and hub for student-led events. Southlands offers a number of leadership development opportunities, including roles on the College Officer Committee and with the Southlands Venture: a volunteering programme which funds student-led projects in the local community. Their mascot is the Shark and the College sports teams – the ‘Sharks’ and the ‘Sharkettes’ – are a credit to our community, succeeding in sport and also running fundraising and campaigning efforts.

Whitelands College

College history and ethosWhitelands is the oldest of the four Colleges, founded in 1841 by the Church of England, and was the first institution in England to provide higher education for women.

Whitelands todayThe common room at Whitelands, also known as The Sett (the College mascot is a badger) is located on the first floor of Parkstead House. With its glorious views, daytime café facilities and evening bar, it is an ideal setting for socialising at any time of the day, and is the venue for a range of parties and other leisure activities.

The College has an exciting calendar of events throughout the year. In addition to our traditional May Day celebration (running since 1881), we host formal dinners each term, a Christmas fair, carol service and dinner, and Science Week, together with many other smaller social events organised by our student leaders. All are open to resident and non-resident students, and to staff.

Whitelands is home to two academic departments – Psychology and Life Sciences – and the Ministerial Theology programme.

ChaplaincyOur multi-faith chaplaincy celebrates the diversity of Roehampton by serving the religious and spiritual needs of all. Each Chaplaincy Centre has a cosy lounge area, where you can relax, meet up with friends and enjoy chaplaincy hospitality with a Fairtrade tea or coffee. We also organise social events, including lunches and film nights.

Medical centreWe have our own on-campus medical centre, offering doctor and nurse-led services, throughout term time.

Student Wellbeing Officers The Wellbeing Service is able to support you during your studies. The Student Wellbeing Officers can help with anything from dealing with personal issues to managing finances. There is also a Counselling Team to help you address personal or emotional difficulties. The Mental Health Advisers can support those with mental health conditions or those with concerns about their mental health.

Financial support

We offer a range of financial support, including generous scholarships, a Student Hardship Fund for those in financial difficulty, access to undergraduate and postgraduate student loans and personal advice on budgeting.

There are many free events to attend throughout the year in London. To name a few, there is Winter Wonderland, Chinese New Year parade, the Boat Race, Pride, Notting Hill Carnival, The Lord Mayor’s show, Lumiere London and Summer by the River!

Studying at Roehampton permits you to choose when you want to dip in and out of the hustle and bustle of the city. On the days where relaxing on campus isn’t for you, the list on the right can give you a few ideas of how you can experience London inexpensively.

Sunset at Richmond Hill Jump on a 493 bus outside campus straight to Richmond, or take a stroll there through Richmond Park. You can spend the day walking along the Thames, maybe stopping along the way at the Hollyhock Fairtrade café, before arriving at Richmond Hill. You will be rewarded with the most mesmerising view of London.

Vauxhall City Farm Alpaca your bags and jump on a train to Vauxhall City Farm (just 5 stops away). With no entrance fee, you can walk around and introduce yourself to the animals, including Bert and Ernie the donkeys, Ethan the tortoise and of course, Tom and Jerry the alpacas. If you don’t fancy a train journey but need animal company, make friends with Putney and Barnes the campus bunnies, or the lovely Growhampton chickens.

Window shoppingEspecially wonderful in the winter: wrap up warm and head to Roehampton, where you can get a 430 bus straight to Harrods. Look at the enchanting window displays outside, before escaping the cold to look at all the luxurious goods they have to offer. If you’ve been there, done that, you can jump on a 72 from outside campus to Westfield, the largest shopping centre in Europe.

Museums There are lots of free museums and art galleries throughout London but you only need one bus (the 430 from outside Whitelands College), to take you straight to three of London’s best museums: the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the V&A Museum. Explore stories of historic and scientific discovery, or feast your eyes on the world’s largest museum of decorative arts and design, all for the price of a bus fare.

Livingcosts

Aside from your course fees, there are additional costs you should take into consideration when budgeting for university. This is a rough guide.

Sport at Roehampton 40 clubs and activities to join

Many of our sports clubs compete in the British University and Colleges Sports (BUCS) leagues including football, tennis, squash, rugby and hockey. We also provide a wide range of social and semi-competitive sport, offering beginners’ courses, intra-mural events and coaching courses.

Gym The recently refurbished gym, fully stocked with the latest equipment, could give you a great opportunity for some high quality down time between your studies. The newly expanded gym space includes a studio devoted to the Les Mills virtual class programme, offering classes on dance fitness to functional, strength, cardio and HIIT workouts.

Fantastic facilitiesOur facilities include a sports hall, a studio and outdoor multi-use courts. Our sports clubs and teams also have access to a number of high quality sports venues in the local area including the National Tennis Centre and Rosslyn Park RFC.

Crystal Palace FC We have partnerships with a number of leading sports organisations, including Crystal Palace FC and the Lawn Tennis Association. Crystal Palace FC offers a range of work experience opportunities, collaboration with Crystal Palace staff in careers-related events, and extensive links between Crystal Palace Ladies FC and the University of Roehampton Women’s Football programme.

Space to run Our green campuses offer an ideal way to get fit in nature and our close proximity to Richmond Park offers further opportunities to be active.

Varsity Varsity is an annual sporting event where the University of Roehampton goes head to head against Bucks New University.

Free yoga Throughout the year we offer free yoga classes open to all students, regardless of ability or experience. Taught by experienced and accredited teachers, the classes explore different yoga styles. Mats and blocks are provided.

Accommodation applications typically open in the February before you arrive for your first year, and you can apply once you have firmly accepted an offer of a place from us.

Types of accommodationWe offer a wide range of accommodation on-campus. Every room is a single furnished bedroom with internet access, and fees include utility bills and contents insurance. Rooms are either en suite, semi en suite (with a private shower) or standard where you share bathroom facilities with other students. All rooms have a wash basin.

On-campus cost The cost of rooms varies, depending on the type of accommodation you choose. For first year undergraduates, this ranges from £123.90–£182 a week.

Living off-campusLiving in or near Roehampton, you can benefit from all that London has to offer, while avoiding the high costs of living in the centre of the city. There is a wide variety of accommodation suitable for students available to rent close to the University.

If you choose to live away from the University, our Off-Campus Support Officer can help you find accommodation with other students in a similar situation.

Even if you are living off campus, or choose to live at home, you will still feel part of the Roehampton community. There are lots of activities and societies you can get involved with when you are on campus.

Course overview This programme is ideal if you have been offered a place on an undergraduate or postgraduate course, but still need to meet academic English language requirements. You will develop key skills for university-level study and learn what is expected of you as a student in the UK higher education system.

Throughout the course you will attend seminars which will improve your spoken English through presentations and discussions based on your reading. You will also further develop your understanding of key ideas in an academic context.

Upon successful completion of the programme, and subject to specific academic and English language requirements, you will be guaranteed a place on your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course. There is no requirement to take an external exam, like IELTS, at the end of the course.

What will I study?Throughout the course you will improve your academic reading, writing, speaking and listening. The programme will help you gain a better understanding of grammar use in the English language, and develop your academic vocabulary for your future studies.

organisation, critical and analytical skills

n Academic vocabulary and grammar development

n Seminars: presentation and discussion based on your reading

n Lectures: understanding the argument, note-taking and taking an active role

n Listening and reading: understanding key ideas in an academic context

Pre-Sessional EnglishHow will I be taught?You will be taught by experienced lecturers and academics who use their experience to develop your academic English skills in preparation for your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course.

Your timetable will include lectures and seminars for 24 hours per week, and at least 10 hours a week will be required for self-study and coursework.

Course overview The International Foundation Programme is specifically designed to build your English language, academic study skills and subject knowledge to the level required to progress on to an undergraduate degree.

Upon successful completion of the programme with a 40% (55% for students progressing on to Law) pass mark and subject to specific course entry requirements, you will be guaranteed consideration for entry on to one of the University of Roehampton’s undergraduate degrees, for more information about target courses please see page 38 or visit: roehampton.ac.uk/pathway-target-courses

3 term programme:In term zero, you will have English classes timetabled for 20 hours per week.

Throughout this term you will improve your language levels in grammar and vocabulary as well as core English skills in reading, writing and listening to prepare you for the first term of the International Foundation Programme. You will only study term zero if you are on our three term programme.

3 & 2 term programme:In terms one and two, you will continue to develop your English language skills, however, more of your time will be spent on improving your English language levels for subject specific undergraduate courses.

These modules are specifically designed to improve your ability to write essays, read for your studies, develop your ability to understand lectures, and take part in discussions and presentations and prepare

you for undergraduate study.How will I be taught and assessed?As part of your programme you will have 20 hours of teaching per week and you will be expected to spend a further 10 to 15 hours undertaking homework, assignments and independent study.

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework and exams which will consist of presentations, assignments and a practical.

By BusBuses run frequently to Roehampton from Hammersmith, Richmond, Kingston, Putney, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon and New Malden.

The 72, 265 and 493 buses stop next to the main site (at Queen Mary’s Hospital) and close to Whitelands and Mount Clare (at the junction of Danebury Avenue). The 170 and 430 buses stop on Danebury Avenue, which is very close to Whitelands and Mount Clare and a short walk from the main site.

By TrainThe main site is a 10 minute walk from Barnes station, Whitelands College is a 25 minute walk or a short bus ride. Trains go to Barnes from Clapham Junction and Waterloo in one direction and Kingston, Richmond, Staines and Windsor in the other direction.

London Underground

Hammersmith is connected to London via the District, Piccadilly, and Hammersmith and City lines. From here you can take the 72 bus departing from stop K in the Lower Bus Station next to the shopping centre

Putney Bridge, on the District Line, connects to the campus via the 265 bus, which departs from outside the station.

CyclingThe University can be easily reached by bike. There are cycle parking stands throughout the campus.
