EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A link was established in 2005 between a school in the United Kingdom and our local school [MASAKHEKE HIGH SCHOOL] in Robertson, in order to allow interaction between educators and learners from the two totally different school. Claremont in as inner city, multi-cultural school, catering for learners between the ages 11 – 18 years. The school specializes in performing arts, Maths and computing.

SUCCESS SCENARIOAn interaction of this kind enabled the learners from

masakheke High school to, through the internet communication, initially and later the hosting of students from Claremont, broaden their horizons and learn about other cultures and countries.

Since 2005, Masakheke High school has acted as host for several groups of teaching staff from Claremont, as well as a group of 13 students from Claremont in February 2007.

Two teachers from Masakheke High school, Mr. A. Carolus, the headmaster and Mrs. M. Kruth, the then HOD and Project manager of the link were invited to visit the United Kingdom [Claremont] in January 2007.

In 2008, a group of 08 learners from Masakheke was selected to visit the United Kingdom for a week and were accompanied by two educators. This was an incredible opportunity which surely enriched the lives of these learners. Claremont high had generously offered to cover their travelling expenses to and from London.

The visit brought a huge amount of prestige to the school of Masakheke High and the wider community of Nkqubela.

An appeal was made to the rest of the community to support the initiative and we are proud to announce that the community was a 100% behind the programme. The 08 learners from Masakheke High school who took part in the programme and the visit; Ms. Nosiphiwo Sithunzela, Ms. Zoliswa Saul, Ms. Olwethu Salman, Ms. Ntomboxolo Ngqwarhushe, Mr. Raymond Mhobo, Mr. M. Hlazo. Mr. Zolani Sibara and Mr. L. Ndongeni showed a huge amount of progress, especially after the trip; for they had learnt a lot from the different cultures they were exposed to.

PROGRAMME REDEVELOPMENT

As a school it is our dream that communications and links such as these be sustained. For the past few years, we have experienced the need our learners have to learn what goes on in the world around them, this has been led by the fact that the majority of our learners, have not even been as far as Cape Town, a city very near to us, due to their lack of affordability.

We are confident that exchange and link programmes have been created to ensure the bridging of the gap we see between our rural schools and the inner city schools, especially with regards to culture and exposure to the many opportunities that exists out there.

REQUEST

We are currently looking to make contact with institutions that can assist us in ensuring the sustainability of this

programme and we are hoping your institution would be able to partner with us in this amazing endeavor.

CONCLUSION

We are sure this will do us and the rest of the community a wealth of good; hence we are requesting that you join us in ensuring that these programmes and many similar one are well sustained.

For more information please do contact me at the information as mentioned above

We are hoping to hear from you soon.
