GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

The attending practitioner should be able to have a better understanding of multiple

topics and subjects discussed during up to 20 hours of continuing medical education

classes with improvement in current knowledge and applications of treatment

techniques for conditions involving the lower extremities.

• To better understand current treatment options for the management of lower extremity dermatology and

gain a better appreciation for the wide array of diseases that can present in the skin and that cutaneous

biopsy techniques are simple and well-reimbursed procedures that may be used in the practice of podiatric

medicine. Biopsy techniques and dermoscopy will be reviewed, making notes of their indications, coding,

and pearls to their application.

• To improve the recognition of failed hammertoe and bunion surgeries and to review the current

recommendations for treatments of these conditions.

• To review current trends and treatment protocols for conditions such as plantar plate repair and painful

adult HAV with metatarsus adductus.

• To learn specific techniques for recognition, evaluation and management, including current medical and

surgical treatment of chronic tibial osteomyelitis.

• To provide additional understanding of limb salvage versus gait preservation in vascular disease and the

options for the treatment of these problems.

• To better understand current treatment options for the management of calcaneal fractures and tendon

injuries in athletes.

• To review current medical and surgical benefits and consequences of ankle fusion takedown and

subsequent total ankle arthroplasty.

• To understand the conditions of neuropathy, the use of medical marijuana and lower extremity sports

injuries.

• To review the role of psychological stress in wound healing and be able to discuss anti-coagulation

therapy in foot and ankle surgery patients.

• To learn updated information regarding biomechanical evaluations of the foot and total contact orthotic

devices and the conditions that are treated with this modality.

• To explore diverse topics presented by medical professionals in specialized areas of podiatric

medicine and surgery, dermatology and diagnostic imaging.

• To discuss the alternatives and options for the Tarsometatarsal arthrodesis procedure.
