Dean’s WelcomeWest Virginia University welcomes you to the International Flute Symposium.

It is my pleasure to welcome all participants, competitors, par-ents, and friends. I trust you will have an exciting experience.

WVU’s School of Music boasts outstanding programs and faculty, which are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

We are very proud of our faculty and student ensembles, which perform extensively in the region and nationally.

We are also very proud of the WVU Marching Band “The Pride of West Virginia,” which tours regularly each year. Through our many ensembles and studio avenues, students have multiple opportunities to travel and study abroad. We feel this is an integral part of the education of our students.

Finally, the quality of our faculty ensembles is remarkable. Our music students have the oppor-tunity to learn from working professionals in all areas.

We know you will enjoy the Creative Arts Center, a suitable venue for all types of visual and performing arts. Please let us know if you have any needs or require assistance during your visit.

I wish the participating flutists much success and enjoyment. I know you will consider WVU and the College of Creative Arts when thinking of furthering your education. We welcome the op-portunity to assist you in the realization of your goals and to help you cultivate your innter artists.

Director’s WelcomeWelcome to the fifth annual International Flute Symposium at West Virginia University! We are so excited to share this year’s event with you and are looking forward to a week of music and artistry of the highest level.

IFS aims to provide a wholistic, well-rounded approach to the study of the flute and the larger art of music-making. This is achieved through a well-rounded program of masterclasses, workshops, en-semble rehearsals, private lessons, Gala Concerts, and more!

I would like to thank our wonderful, internationally acclaimed artists and our many workshop presenters and performers, without whom this event would not be possible. Many thanks to Jas-mine Choi, Alberto Almarza, Nina Assimakopoulos, the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, BETA Quartet, Kelly Wilson, and our workshop presenters. I would also like to thank our staff accompanist, Vahan Sargsyan, for his amazing talents and support of our students and artists alike.

I would also like to thank our wonderful and committed IFS staff, including Artistic Director Nina Assimakopoulos, Assistant Director Brittany Trotter, Director of Public Relations Eftihia Arkoudis, Flute Choir Directors Tatiana Cassetta and Brianna Busch, and Resident Hall Chaper-ones Jose Ramirez, Miranda Cook, and Jamie Mandelson. Hosting an event such as this takes a LOT of time, work, professionalism, and dedication, and IFS would not be successful without the talents and service of this great staff.

Finally, thank you to our sponsors: the WVU College of Creative Arts, WVU School of Music, Altus Flutes, Flute Center of New York, Flute Specialists, JL Smith & Co., and Janet Szilagyi, without whom we would not have been able to make this event a success!

We wish you a wonderful International Flute Symposium experience here at West Virginia Uni-versity! I am looking forward to sharing this week of beautiful music with each and every one of you.

School of Music Director’s WelcomeWelcome to West Virginia University. It is a pleasure and honor to of-fer the International Flute Symposium, a celebration of the flute with concerts, clinics, and masterclasses. With internationally-known guests, Alyssa Schwartz, Nina Assimakopoulos, and the WVU Flute Studio have put together a fine event that I believe will invigorate and inform you.

As the premier cultural entity in the state of West Virginia, hosting events such as this is one of the most important services we offer to the state and region. If there is any way we can be of assistance during your stay, please do not hesitate to ask the faculty, or the staff of the School of Music, to help.

I hope you will get a chance during your stay to explore Morgantown and the rest of the WVU campus. Whatever your involvement (student, clinician, or audience member), our community has much to offer.

Again, thank you for spending part of your summer with us in the School of Music.

Welcome to the 2017 edition of the International Flute Symposium at West Virginia University! During this event, amazing things are set to happen. Between the competitions, master classes, the flute choir, and (most importantly) all of the amazing musicians you will meet - each and every one of you will grow as a flutist this week.

This week I look forward to working with the IFS Concert Flute Choir in rehearsal and performance. We will be playing some re-ally fun repertoire, and I hope to ensure that we all have tons of fun putting our portion of the Final Gala Concert together!

I would like to thank Nina Assimakopoulos and Alyssa Schwartz for inviting me to contribute to IFS through this year’s flute choir. I would also like to thank Tatiana Cassetta for her help in put-ting this year’s flute choir experience together. Finally, I would like to thank all of the wonderful flute choir participants for making music with us this year! I am looking forward to the beautiful music and memories that we will make this week!

Brianna BuschB.M. Music Education | West Virginia University IFS Flute Choir Director

Welcome to the 2017 International Flute Symposium at West Virginia University! My name is Tatiana Cassetta and I will be your Symphonic Flute Choir Conductor.

Nothing brings me greater joy than watching students grow and improve aspects of their playing, and what better opportunity than a 5 day sym-posium! I am looking forward to tackling some fun, yet challenging flute choir music together.

Although this is my first attendance at IFS, I think this will be the best year yet. It is humbling being a part of this year’s symposium with artists including Jasmine Choi, Alberto Almarza, Nina Assimakopoulos, and the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps.

Additionally, I am thrilled to be part of the flute choirs alongside my friend and colleague, Bri-anna Busch. I hope that you will all take something home with you, whether it’s a new technique you learned from one of our legendary flutists, or if it’s a new friendship you’ve made along the way. Enjoy your time here, do what you love, and let’s make music together!

Master Artists Master ArtistsSuperstar flutist Jasmine Choi was named one of the Top 10 Greatest Flutist in History by Sinfini Maga-zine, UK in February 2015, and she is at her best shape than ever before. Choi is extremely well-known for her golden tone, highly sophisticated musicianship, charismatic stage pres-ence, as well as her ground-breaking technique, her adventurous approach to repertoire, and daring to play other genres than limiting herself in closed walls.

She is a flutist for whom it can be said that the descriptor “first” is uncommonly apt. Choi was the first Korean musician and first woman principal to join the Vienna Symphony in the orchestra’s storied 113-year history, the first Korean woodwind player to be hired as principal by a major symphony orchestra in the United States, the first classical musician to attempt the official Pops Recital tour in Korea, and the first Korean featured as a cover story in Flute Talk magazine USA.

Korea Times praised her as “the Goddess of the Flute“, and after having served as principal flute of the Vienna Symphony and associate principal flute of the Cincinnati Symphony, Choi has now moved on to a high-flying career as a full-time soloist.

Born in Seoul and raised in Daejon, South Korea, Jasmine Choi is from a family where most members of the family were professional classical musicians; including her conductor grandfa-ther and her violinist mother to name a few. She began her musical studies on violin at age three, and piano at five. Her interest in music, however, has only realized when she picked up the flute which was a present for her ninth birthday. Playing the flute has become her biggest passion ever since.

At 16, Choi came to the United States when she was accepted to study at the Curtis Institute of Music on a full scholarship. The legendary New York Philharmonic principal Julius Baker called her „a huge sensation,“ and she studied with him for four years until his death in 2003 which left Choi as the last student of the legend. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis In-stitute of Music and a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School where she studied with Philadelphia Orchestra principal Jeffrey Khaner, and later she continued her further studies with Thomas Robertello. Upon her graduation at Juilliard School, Choi moved directly to play as as-sociate principal flute at Cincinnati Symphony when 22 years old, and six years later she moved on to Vienna Symphony.

Nominated by Symphony magazine as one of America’s Emerging Artists\ in 2005, Jasmine Choi was presented on the „Rising Stars“ series in Carnegie Hall‘s Weill Recital Hall and at Philadel-phia‘s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Performance highlights include solo recitals at Wigmore Hall in London, Konzerthaus Schubert Saal in Vienna, the Academy of Music in

Philadelphia‘s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Performance highlights include solo re-citals at Wigmore Hall in London, Konzerthaus Schubert Saal in Vienna, the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, and she has appeared as a soloist in the Musikver-ein Golden Hall in Vienna, Konzerthaus Mozart Saal in Vienna, Dvorak and Smetana Halls in Prague, and Disney Hall in Los Angeles.

She has performed as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Juilliard Symphony, Vienna Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Salzburg Mozarteum, Turku Philharmonic, Riga Sinfonietta, Czech Philharmonic Chamber, Seoul Phil-harmonic, KBS Symphony, among many others. As an ambassador of classical music, Choi also performed at the UN president Ban Ki-Moon‘s inauguration reception in New York, and she was a soloist with Vienna Symphony for the open-ing concert of the Bregenz Festival. Choi was invited as a featured soloist for the National Flute Association (NFA)’s 40th anniversary in Las Vegas, and was extensively celebrated with her solo performances including the opening gala concert and the closing ceremony, as well as a solo recital.

Adventurous in expanding the repertoire for flute, Jasmine Choi performs her own arrangements of the violin concertos of Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky, the Saint-Saens Introduction and Ron-do Capriccioso, Zigeunerweisen, as well as numerous other violin and cello sonatas. Her ar-rangements of the Bach’s Double Concerto for two violins and the Monti’s Czardas have been published by the Falls House Press USA.

Also active in the contemporary classical music scene, her early commissions include works by Korean- American composers Solbong Kim and James Ra, and she frequently performs the works of Isang Yun. More recently, the well-known flutist and composer Gary Schocker dedi-cated a piece to her called “Winter Jasmine”, in celebration of Choi’s new 14k gold flute hand-made by David Straubinger. A composer/ conductor Mark Laycok has written the Flute Concerto for Jasmine Choi“ for flute and string orchestra which had the US and European premieres with the composer on the podium. Choi also made the world-premiere of the Detlev Glanert‘s Mozart Variations for flute and orchestra which was broadcasted live by ORF TV in Austria.

As a recording artist, Choi has recorded five solo CDs including Sony Classical label; the Mozart Flute Concertos, Fantasy: Virtuosic Flute Works, Claude Bolling Suite for Flute and Jazz Trio, Mozart Flute Quartets, and her latest CD, “The Telemann Files” has made a fresh wave in the music scene as she made an extremely successful crowdfunding online.

Highlights of the season 2015-2016 includes performing with the Berlin Symphony at the Phil-harmonie Berlin, the Baden-Baden Philharmonic at the KKL in Lucerne, the Korean Symphony for their New Year‘s Eve concert in Seoul, George Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest, Olten Philharmonic in Izmir, recitals in Paris, Berlin, Arlberg, Madrid, Bangkok, Seoul, and her own annual master classes in Bregenz. Seeking to use music as a conduit to both console and inspire her listeners, Choi enjoys sharing her thoughts and communicates directly with fans.

Associate ArtistsThe United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps was organized in 1960 to support official ceremonial functions and to revive our country’s musical heritage. The musicians of this unit recall the days of the American Revolution wearing uniforms patterned after those worn by the musicians of General George Washington’s Conti-nental Army. Today, the Corps serves as a living example of the rich traditions of over 240 years of Army history.

As an official representative of the US Army, the Corps averages nearly 500 performances annu-ally. In support of the President, the Corps performs at all Armed Forces arrival ceremonies for visiting dignitaries and Heads of State at the White House as has participated in every Presidential Inaugural Parade since President John F. Kennedy’s in 1961. Here in Washington D.C. and across the Nation, the Corps tells the Army’s story to millions of people every year through their unique and exciting performances.

The U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps Fife Ensemble was created to explore aspects of the fife not previously accessible to the full Fife and Drum Corps. Soldiers in the Fife Ensemble incorporate music from the very beginnings of the nation’s musical culture, through the 19th and 20th century, and includes modern music and original compositions. The Fife Ensemble is dedi-cated to exploring new music and techniques while pushing the envelope of what is considered “normal” for such an historical instrument.
