Whilst recent years have seen an insurgence of engineered wood products such as Medium Density FibreBoard (MDF), chipboard,plywoodandparticleboard, therehasbeengrowingconcernover theuseofurea/formaldehydemixturesastheresinusedtobindthewoodinthesematerials.This isdue, in largepart,tothecarcinogenic toxicity of formaldehyde. Herein we present a novel binder for MDF devoid of formaldehyde;comprisingreadilyavailablestartingmaterials,namely,apoly-alcohol,asaltandstarch.Starboardisamenabletolamination,sawing,drillingandroutingandcanprovideasuitablealternativematerialtoconventionalMDF. Furthertobeingdevoidofformaldehyde,thefibreboardsgeneratedbyourprocessrequirealowerwoodloadingthanconventionalMDF.Inaddition,thethermoplasticnatureofthebindingagentsmeansthatoff-cutfibreboardgenerated by our process can be re-ground and re-pressed into fibre board giving rise to a 100%waste freeprocess.Furthermore,theresinsynthesis isaconcertedreactionprocessrequiringnopreciousmetalcatalystsor controlled gaseous environments and is a 100% atom economical reaction, generating nowastematerial.

Waterborne (WB) UV curable coatings have become popular choices for industrial wood applications. Kitchen cabinet and office furniture manufacturers choose these coatings because they have excellent resistance andmechanical properties, excellent application properties and very low VOCs. This presentation will compare the performance of several different WB UV coatings to that of a traditional solvent-based· acid catalyzed conversion varnish.
