Braemar is the highest and most mountainous parish in the UK. Its Post Office which stands in the centre of the village is 1110ft above sea level. Braemar Gathering, held on the first Saturday in September, is the only Highland games to have had continuous royal patronage since 1848. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote his classic ‘Treasure Island’ while on holiday in Braemar. His friend John Silver lived on Chapel Brae in the village. Braemar holds the record for the lowest temperature recorded in Britain. On the 10th of January 1982, the mercury fell to -27.2c.
