WELCOMING NOTE BY CHAIRPERSON OF THE 12th EURECA 2019

On behalf of the organizing committee, I am delighted to welcome

all the delegates, speakers and sponsors to Taylor’s University for the

12th International Engineering research conference (eureca) held on

3 – 4 July 2019. Eureca allows for the combination of research

initiatives with the presently entrenched culture of project-based

learning, as exemplified through the implementation of CDIO

initiatives at Taylor’s School of Engineering. We believe that the

superior combination will further propel our students towards

enhanced challenge-solving skills to contribute massively to the

development of the nation and mankind.

Our technical program is rich and comprises of 3 keynote speeches, one from academia

and two from industries such as Top Glove and BASF. We have 103 technical papers in

total split into 16 parallel session. Besides, there will be a session for final year students

poster presentations.

As the conference chair of 12th eureca, I know that the success of the conference

depends ultimately on the many people who have worked with us in planning and

organizing the event with us. In particular, we thank the Program Chairs for their wise

advice and brilliant suggestion on organizing the technical program; the external

reviewers for their thorough and timely reviewing of the papers, all the external judges

who accepted our invitation and our sponsors for providing their kind contributions to

the event.

We hope this conference will offer participants a platform to exchange ideas, discover

novel opportunities, reacquaint with colleagues, meet new friends and broaden

knowledge. Lastly, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to my organizing team in

making eureca to be yet another success story of Taylor’s School of Engineering!

Associate Professor Dr. Rashmi Gangasa Walvekar

Tailored Defecto-Glass as Radiation Dosimeter

Sensor – From Fabrication to Application

SYPNOSIS Ionizing radiation is radiation with enough energy so that

during interaction with an atom, it can remove tightly

bonded electrons from their orbits, causing the atom to

become charged or ionized. Radiation dosimetry is a measurement and calculation of

the radiation dose received by a matter or tissue resulting from the exposure to ionizing

radiation. Ionizing radiation dosimetry has wide range of applications such as personal

dose monitoring, radiation diagnosis, cancer/tumor therapy, food/spice and surgical

tools sterilization, nuclear association industries and etc. This talk demonstrates how by

tailoring glass-based optical fibers, radiation dose detection sensitivity of a material can

be improved more than 400 times. Also, the influence of fiber structures, dimensions, and

doping materials on performance of dosimeters will be discussed. Finally, several

practical applications such as in-vivo dosimetry that the developed dosimeters have

been used will be presented.

PROFILE Since May 2016, Dr. Ghafour joined the School of Engineering, Taylor’s University. Apart from

Optical Communication Systems, his current research interests are on photonic sensors based on

microstructured optical fibers. So far, he published more than 70 refereed journals, 35 conferences,

9 patents, and achieved several research and teaching excellence awards. In teaching, he has

experienced different Electrical and Communication courses and supervised several

undergraduate and postgraduate students. He involved in several research grant projects (total

of >RM 10 Million) as investigator/member. The significance of finding output form his research

projects are different types of optical fiber dosimeter sensors.

Come create chemistry! People and talent

development in BASF

SYPNOSIS At BASF, we create chemistry for a sustainable future. We

combine economic success with environmental protection

and social responsibility. Chemical innovations play a key

role as they make a crucial contribution, above and

beyond existing solutions and to virtually all industry sectors.

At BASF, we believe that people are the key to our long-

term success and that talent is in everyone. Come and find

out with Agnes Lau, Head of Product Safety Asia Pacific about how 'you' can create

chemistry with us!

PROFILE Agnes Lau is Head of Product Safety Asia Pacific. She joined BASF in 2012 and is responsible for

creating, building and moulding the Chemical Regulations team into what is it today. Based in

Kuala Lumpur, Agnes frequently visits BASF sites across Asia Pacific markets and has gained insights

on the region’s developing and evolving chemical and trade control regulation landscape over

the years. In her current role, Agnes leads a diverse expertise team across different countries in

Asia Pacific. Agnes is passionate in people development and enabling talent in living their fullest

potential

Employers’ Expectations and

Employability Skills of Fresh Graduates

SYPNOSIS Employability skills refer to set of skills and knowledge

required by the graduates in the workplace to satisfy

their needs and corporate expectations. In this talk, we will discuss the expectation from

the recruiters and how the students can develop their employability skills and how it

should be applied in the interview session.

PROFILE Ms. Mei Ng is the Senior Manager, HR of Top Glove. She has more than 20 years of talent acquisition

experience and recruits more than 2300 graduates yearly and globally for the company. A

graduate from RMIT, Australia and a council member of the Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion

Council (MREPC), Ms. Ng is also the Chairman for Top Glove Foundation.

Engineering Education Workshop: Conceiving - Designing - Implementing -

Operating (CDIO) Framework

SYNOPSIS:

Ever since developed by MIT in year 2000, the CDIO Framework has emerged as the

core of Engineering Education globally and being adapted if not adopted by

engineering schools internationally. A statement of the underlying need for

engineering education is that: Graduating engineers should be able to conceive-

design-implement-operate complex value-added engineering systems in a modern

team-based environment [CDIO Syllabus Version 2.0, 2011]. CDIO-ability has been seen

as the ultimate aim for engineering graduate whereas to attain this skill, an engineering

graduate will have to master 1. Technical Knowledge and Reasoning 2. Personal and

Professional Skills and 3. Interpersonal Skills and these can be achieved through project-

based learning. This workshop will introduce CDIO framework, how it is implemented

though project-based learning and some innovative deliveries that may be useful to

all engineering educators.

Trainers biodata:

Dr Se Yong is a lecturer in the School of Engineering, Taylor’s University.

He was the Programme Director for Foundation in Engineering, which

allows him to adopt many teaching and learning initiatives in the

programme to improve student learning experience and knowledge

attainment. Dr Se Yong is actively participated in teaching and

learning exhibition, nationally and internationally. In year 2018, he has

won 3 medals from the competitions and also presented 2 papers in

international engineering education conferences. Dr Se Yong is a fond

user of CDIO and adopting it in his project-based modules.

Dr Rashmi Walvekar obtained her bachelor’s in Chemical

Engineering from SDM college of engineering and Technology,

Dharwad (India). She completed her PhD in the area of nanofluids for

heat transfer application. During her PhD she won several awards at

university, national and international level. She has published more

than 30 journal papers appearing in both ISI and Scopus indexed

journals. Her other research output includes 3 patents and 4 book

chapters. Dr Rashmi has been awarded with vice chancellor most

cited academic award and best paper presentation at Taylor’s

research fair in year 2016. Her research area includes nanofluid

synthesis for heat transfer application, deep eutectic solvents as

alternative solvents, recycle of waste rubber tire, production of

nanoparticles from biomass and bio-nanolubricants.
