108 Faculty of Anaesthetists The Dudley Buxton prize for 1980 has been awarded to Prof. M. K. Sykes, of the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. Dr Norman Dearden has won the Nuffield prize. Association of Medical Deans in Europe The Association for Medical Education in Europe has set up this association of deans from the 32 European countries of the World Health Organisation. A meeting of the new Association will be held in Groningen, Netherlands, on Sept. 1, 1980. Anti-smoking Campaign The Health Education Council is conducting an advertising campaign to persuade parents who smoke that even the young- est children can pick up the smoking habit. The campaign is based on research conducted by Dr Leo Baric, of Manchester University. His findings are reported in a monograph entitled Primary Socialisation and Smoking, available (,C2-50) from the Council at 78 New Oxford Street, London WC1A 1AH. Dr Andrei D. Sakharov, the Soviet physicist, has received in absentia the Presidential award of the New York Academy of Sciences. The Geological Society of London is holding a meeting on Geology and Health at Burlington House, London W 1 V OJU, on Jan. 30. Ap- plications for tickets may be made to the Society’s assistant executive secretary at Burlington House. The Chest, Heart and Stroke Association is holding conferences on May 16 and July 4. Annual Report In an effort to reduce the workload of the D.H.S.S. and Civil Service expenditure, the Secretary of State has decided to terminate all preparation and publication of the 1978 annual report of the D.H.S.S. He was considering whether a portion of the material which had already been prepared for the report might be made available in another way. Correction Effect, on Serum Lipid Levels of w-3 Fatty Acids, of Ingest- ing Fish-oil Concentrate.-The second sentence of the second paragraph of this letter by Dr C. M. van Gent and colleagues (Dec. 8, p. 1249) contains a printer’s error. It should have read: "The preparation contained 81% of w-3 acids, among them 25% EPA and 38% w-3 docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)." University of London: Impact of Government’s Policy.-We apolo- gise to Dr C. E. Gordon Smith for a mistake in the third paragraph of his comment (Jan. 5, p. 35). The last sentence should read: "The School would expect to be allowed (indeed encouraged) to use its judgement as to the rate of increase of fees which the market (and par- ticularly the fellowship budgets which support most of its overseas stu- dents) will bear so as to try to maximise income from overseas students without killing the goose that lays the golden egg and without grossly increasing unit costs."
