Mercedes-Benz is setting a new standard with the new E-Class. The most intelligent business saloon ever built lifts comfort, dynamics, efficiency, safety and connectivity to a whole new level. And this applies to another member of the E-Class family, too. The new estate pairs the outstanding values of the saloon with added functionality. Both share the fresh design and the excellent engine line-up of efficient and powerful drives, ranging from the four-cylinder diesel engine with 150 hp to the six-cylinder petrol engine with 333 hp.

It offers many benefits, especially for vehicle fleets – something also underscored by the results of many tests carried out by independent experts. For example, we achieved top placing in the “Spring 2020” residual value rankings by “Focus Online” and market research institute “bähr & fess forecasts”. Nine models received top scores for particularly high value stability. The results of mainstream research have also been outstanding: In the 2016 DEKRA Used Car Report, no fewer than four models took the top spot in their respective segments, while six models made the top ten in the overall rankings of the 2016 TÜV Report – with the B-Class at number one and the C-Class winning the mid-size class.

The trade press agrees – Mercedes-Benz cars possess outstanding qualities. Both the S-Class and the C-Class won their respective segments in AutoZeitung’s “Auto Trophy”, as well as “Best Car” awards from auto motor und sport. At the AutomotiveINNOVATIONS Awards 2015, Mercedes-Benz was honoured as the most innovative company of the entire decade.

All this underscores the leading role that Mercedes-Benz holds, particularly in terms of technical innovation. This is a standard we consistently set ourselves – and one that is valued by our customers. Last year, Mercedes-Benz sold 1.88 million vehicles, marking another best in company history. We are entirely optimistic about this year, too. And if you take a look at the E-Class, you’ll understand why.

Yours,Matthias Lührs

The business saloon is the fleet highlight in the Mercedes-Benz Year of the Dream Car. It sets design accents with a clear and yet emotional design, as well as a high-quality, exclusive interior. A host of technical innovations enable comfortable and safe driving on a previously unattained level, while adding a whole new dimension to driver relief. Plus, infotainment and operating systems offer a completely new experience. Another prime

example is the brand new diesel engine, which, paired with lightweight design and best-in-class aerodynamic efficiency, sets efficiency benchmarks in this segment. The new estate obviously has all the same innovations as the E-Class Saloon, while also offering a compelling spatial concept. That makes the sixth generation of the estate the most intelligent estate that Mercedes-Benz has ever built.

Sporty silhouette, spacious interior

The new estate is the perfect all-rounder for business, leisure and family. The E-Class Estate has a modern, stylish and dynamic look, sharing the same styling as the saloon as far as the B-pillar. The taut silhouette flows from the long bonnet over the sporty sweep of the roofline into a powerful estate rear end with a sharply angled rear windscreen. Short overhangs, a long wheelbase and large wheels give the E-Class Estate dynamic proportions. As with the saloon, the distinctive front end sports a different look depending on the design and equipment line. “Despite its sporty roofline, the E-Class Estate has the most rear-seat space in the segment. Intelligent features make the generous load capacity even more useable through the likes of the Cargo setting for the rear seat backrests and their 40:20:40 split, which comes as standard,” enthuses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales.

On the inside, too, the E-Class Estate has the same design as the saloon, which has already received three “Automotive Interiors Expo Awards”. Two wide, high-resolution, brilliant dashboard displays are available as options. Premium materials characterise the interior style, with wooden trim featuring yacht-like flowing lines offering a contemporary interpretation of marquetry. Customers can also choose an all-new kind of metal weave. The seats combine characteristic Mercedes long-distance comfort with a sporty, cultivated look and different designs depending on the choice of line. Also new to the segment is the Warmth Comfort package with heated armrests in the door and centre console as well as the fast-acting seat heating Plus.

The Success Story April 1978 marked the start of production of the estate version of the 123 series. A long success story began, with well in excess of one million business estates built to-date. Since then, the “T” in the German name “T-Modell” has stood for Tourism and Transport – not to mention Trendsetter. Among its loyal fan base, the estate model has long established itself as a firm favourite in more than just the full-size line-up at Mercedes-Benz. There has been an estate version of every subsequent E-Class generation (S 124, S 210, S 211, S 212). The competition followed suit – some considerably later than others.

Load MasterWith a capacity of 640 to 1,820 litres, the load space of the E-Class Estate is one of the biggest in the segment. One new feature is the Cargo function for the rear seats. The backrest can be set around ten degrees more upright, increasing the load volume by 35 litres, while keeping the car as a fully functioning five-seater. Also part of standard equipment is the EASY-PACK Tailgate, which makes for extremely convenient loading and unloading with electromechanical opening and closing at the touch of a button. The KEYLESS-GO with HANDS-FREE ACCESS option is one choice for exceptionally easy operation: A kicking motion beneath the rear bumper is all it takes for the driver to open and close the tailgate fully automa-tically. There is no need for a spare hand or to put down baggage.

Intelligent Drive – Equipped with all the E-Class assistance systems

The new E-Class sets benchmarks in safety, comfort and driver convenience and they are, of course, all available for the estate version, too. Standard equipment includes Active Brake Assist. It warns the driver of the threat of collision, aids in emergency braking and will brake auto-nomously in the event of an emergency. As well as slow-moving, stopping or stationary vehicles, it also recognises pedestrians crossing in front of the vehicle. Likewise standard are ATTENTION ASSIST with adjustable sensitivity, which can warn against inattention and drowsiness, and Crosswind Assist, which aids the driver by significantly reducing the lateral movement of the vehicle caused by strong gusts of wind from the side.

The highlights of the optional driver assistance package that make the E-Class the most intelligent vehicle in its class also include DRIVE PILOT, with which Mercedes-Benz is taking the next step en route to autonomous driving. As

Distance Pilot DISTRONIC, it is not only able on all types of road to keep the car the correct distance behind vehicles in front automatically, it can also follow them at a speed of up to 210 km/h for the first time. This can make life easier for the driver, who no longer needs to operate the brake or accelerator pedal during normal driving and also receives plenty of steering assistance from the Steering Pilot – even on moderate bends.

Also new is the Remote Park Pilot, which, for the first time, enables the driver to complete parking manoeuvres in car parks and on-road parking spaces via smartphone from outside the car. Getting into and out of the car is therefore extremely straightforward and comfortable, even when faced with extremely tight spaces.

Efficient engines in the E-Class

An entirely new developed diesel engine sets efficiency benchmarks in this segment in conjunction with lightweight construction and optimum aerodynamic figures. The new E 220 d with a maximum output of 143 kW/195 hp offers more performance than the previous model yet consumes 13 percent less fuel. The broad range of engines extends right up to the Performance V6 from Mercedes AMG.

Even rear-seat passengers have plenty on offer. The E-Class Estate is the ideal companion for business and family. One example is the rear-seat entertainment – a few easy moves is all it takes to convert the rear bench of the E-Class into a communication centre or cinema with iPad® Rear Seat Integration Plug & Play. The optional equipment necessary to facilitate this is the “pre-installation for entertainment and comfort”. The fixture is available from Mercedes-Benz retailers as an original accessory and is simply inserted into the pre-installed slot on the back of the front seats. The fixture can be turned and tilted and enables use of an iPad®.

The driver and front-seat passenger find themselves once again in a modern cockpit. Dashboard options include two brilliant, wide, high-resolution 12.3-inch displays that merge beneath a single glass cover to become a Wide-screen Cockpit. Because the cockpit is fully digital, the driver can configure it with the information and views most relevant to him and select from three different styles: “Classic”, “Sport” and “Progressive”. Also celebrating their debut in the E-Class are the touch-sensitive Touch Controls in the steering wheel, which permit gesture- control of all infotainment functions.

Intelligence meets efficiency – Efficient engines for the entire Mercedes-Benz Fleet

10

Page 11: International Corporate Sales - Mercedes- · PDF fileThe business saloon is the fleet highlight in the Mercedes-Benz Year of the Dream Car. It sets design accents with a clear and

The efficiency of Mercedes-Benz vehicles has always been a decisive factor in the brand’s success. Hybrid and electric vehicles play an important role in the Mercedes-Benz roadmap for sustainable mobility, alongside the ongoing optimisation of modern internal combustion engines. An important element is state-of-the-art technology with targeted improvement initiatives on the vehicle in areas such as aerodynamics, lightweight design and energy management. This efficiency is particularly beneficial to

vehicle fleets. In the two decades since 1995, the average fuel consumption of the car fleet sank by almost a half from 9.2 l/100 km (230 g CO2/km) to 5.0 l (125 g CO2/km). This also means a reduction in emissions. Today, 68 models from Mercedes-Benz Cars already emit less than 120 g/km and 108 models bear the A+ or A efficiency label. The result is exemplary ecology and high efficiency through low fixed costs.

Next-Generation diesel technology – Intelligent engines, too

The latest Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder marks the start of a forward-looking engine family. More than 80 years of diesel expertise have gone into the OM654. Following its debut in the E 220 d , the state-of-the-art power unit will be applied extensively across the entire Mercedes-Benz Cars and Vans line-up. There are plans for several power variants as well as longitudinal and transverse installation in vehicles with front, rear and all-wheel drive.

The new Mercedes-Benz E 220 d1 has also proven itself in extensive testing. The independent vehicle inspection institute DEKRA has certified it with exceptionally low emissions in real-life driving – especially in terms of nitrogen oxides (NOx). DEKRA experts selected four different routes and tested NOx emissions under the real-life traffic conditions that come into force in 2017. All the test routes took between one-and-a-half and two hours to drive, had very dynamic driving profiles, incorporated city and motorway driving and called for a high degree of acceleration. The conclusion of the DEKRA tests confirmed that the E 220 d1 undercut even future NOx limits by a considerable margin.

Formula One technology in the E-Class

Among the technologies delivering low emissions and exemplary efficiency is one that comes directly from Formula One. NANOSLIDE® coating on the cylinder barrels is also used in the V6 power unit of the Mercedes Petronas F1 W07 Hybrid. Combined with other measures, it lowers internal friction by around 25 percent. The new E 220 d1 consumes around 13 percent less fuel than its predecessor – yet power output and performance have been increased.

Real Driving Emissions As of September 2017, emissions will no longer be calculated only on test rigs (as specified by the NEDC standard), but with additional RDE tests in real driving situations. The abbreviation stands for Real Driving Emissions. According to RDE requirements, as of September 2017 the nitrogen oxide emissions of new diesel vehicles under real-life driving conditions may not exceed 2.1 times (conformity factor) the specified lab value of 80 mg/km – which equates to 168 mg/km. As of 2020, the conformity factor will be 1.5; meaning 120 mg of NOx per kilometre will be permitted under real-life driving conditions. The WLTP cycle (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) was another focal point in the development of the new diesel engine. Compared with the NEDC, it is aimed at ensuring the figures for standardised and real-life con-sumption are more closely matched in future.

Plug-in-hybrid – Future inside

The latest plug-in-hybrid from Mercedes-Benz is called the E 350 e. The saloon boasts compelling dynamics and efficiency and enables more than 30 kilometres of battery-electric (and thus zero-emissions) driving. The business saloon has impressive performance and consumption figures (see table).

Hybrid driving is efficient, dynamic and easy

In the background, intelligent drive management automatically selects the ideal combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor. With the aid of four operating modes (HYBRID, E-MODE, E-SAVE and CHARGE) and five driving programmes, the driver can choose to control the hybrid interaction and driving character him/herself – thus placing the emphasis on efficiency, comfort or sporty performance as preferred.

If the driver has programmed a destination into the navigation system, an intel-ligent operating strategy controls the charge and discharge of the high-voltage battery. The energy is then used to its best possible advantage across the entire route. The aim of this route-based operating strategy is also to reach towns and cities with the battery as full as possible to enable efficient and frequent electric driving in stop-and-go traffic.

A haptic gas pedal helps the driver achieve an efficient driving style. A noticeable pressure point indicates, for instance, that the maximum electric power has been reached and that the combustion engine will kick in if the pedal is pressed further. A double pulse prompts the driver to lift off the gas when the standard-fit proximity warning system identifies a slower-moving vehicle ahead. The car can then slow down automatically using the electric motor as a generator, thus recovering energy and avoiding frequent braking, particularly in convoy traffic.

Mercedes-Benz plug-in-hybrid offensive

The Mercedes-Benz plug-in-hybrid offensive is currently a matter of particular focus: By 2017, there will be ten models on the market. Following the S 500 e launched in 2014 and the C 350 e (saloon and estate) successfully introduced in March 2015, the fourth model to reach dealers was the GLE 500 e 4MATIC launched in August 2015. After the GLC 350 e, the E 350 e Saloon is the second plug-in- hybrid to come to market in 2016.

Mercedes-Benz Cars continues to work intensively on fuel-cell and battery-powered vehicles for zero local emissions driving. Following the market launch of the battery-electric B 250 e in 2015, comes the new version

of the smart electric drive in 2016. The city car is entering its fourth generation and, alongside the familiar two-seater and convertible, is also available as a four-seater. The company is also working on an intelligent concept for a universal architecture for a vehicle with a range of 400 to 500 kilometres. Plus, development engineers are working on a new generation of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles with fuel cells. Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce a model based on the GLC in 2017. The company is also committed to clean and alternative fuels that do not compete with food production.

“A really impressive story.”

Nico, what is the connection between your company car, the F1 W07 HYBRID and a road-going Mercedes-Benz plug-in-hybrid? The technology in the Formula One race car is completely different, isn’t it?

Actually, there are a lot of similarities. Formula One is like a test laboratory for what we will be driving on the road in a few years’ time. Our Hybrid Power Unit has an advanced internal combustion engine and two electric motors – one recovers braking the energy, the other is an e-turbo. Those technologies mean that we have over 900 horsepower available but the efficiency of the engine is better than anything on the road today. And because we have a fixed amount of fuel for every race, the way we improve performance is by increasing the efficiency of the engine in order to generate more power. The lessons we learn in Formula One feeds down to improve our hybrid cars on the road in areas like electric motors, energy management and battery technology.

In what race situations do you use the electric drive?

The electric motors on the Formula One power unit are always active during the race – it’s a permanent hybrid system. With the brake energy recovery, we harvest energy from the rear axle under braking, store it in the battery, then deploy it back to the rear axle, with a boost of up to 160 horsepower, when we are on the straights. The electric turbo recovers energy from the exhaust turbine and deploys that energy to accelerate the com-pressor, which means we have no turbo lag at all when we go on the throttle. The onboard software calculates the energy management for the best overall lap time. In the cockpit, we can choose to deploy additional hybrid energy in the form of an ‘overtake’ boost, and we can choose different engine settings for maximum power or maximum economy. But most of the work is done by the intelligent energy management software so we can focus on driving at the limit of performance.

Formula One is primarily about speed. What does hybrid technology do for regular drivers?

In Formula One, we improve the efficiency of the engine in order to generate more power; on the road, the same technology can be used to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The road-going hybrids have different strategies for deploying more power or more range, or even driving in full electric mode in the city, depending on what the driver wants to do. Mercedes-Benz has a wide range of efficient, dynamic hybrids from the C to the S-Class, which appeal to a wide range of customers. And I think it’s fantastic that Mercedes-Benz is the only manufacturer bringing Formula One technology to the road, with great results. It’s a really impressive story.

Autonomous driving has become a key term in the context of mobility, and Mercedes-Benz is developing the necessary technologies. The F 015 Luxury in Motion research vehicle, for instance, demonstrates what the future of autonomous driving might look like. The production version of the new E-Class already offers extensive assistance systems and semi-autonomous functions – making some aspects of

the future tangible and bringing them into the present day. Mercedes-Benz is enjoying great international success with its research. The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the first production car in the world to receive a testing licence for autonomous driving in the U.S. state of Nevada.

Next-generation driver assistance systems –Intelligent Drive next level

Mercedes-Benz engineers are working continuously in Nevada and other places to develop driver assistance systems and their associated safety components in order to achieve an ideal combination of safety, comfort and stress relief. The fields of integral safety and intelligent drive are increasingly intertwined and work in synergy as part of a cross-system concept. With its components it can:

• assist and provide stress relief during normal driving detect dangers

• warn, assist and, if necessary, intervene in a timely manner

• consequently prevent accidents or reduce the severity of accidents

• activate protective measures such as the PRE-SAFE® components as a precaution in the event of danger and thus provide on-demand protection

The individual functions use networked sensors, which provide extensive information on the vehicle and its surroundings. Besides a further-developed multipurpose stereo camera behind the windscreen and new radar sensors all around the vehicle, this also includes tried-and-tested sensors such as ultrasound. The combined use of sensor data makes it possible to analyse complex traffic situations, recognise potential dangers in traffic more clearly and thus expand the capabilities of the safety and assistance systems. In order to provide drivers with the best possible support in wintry conditions, the new-generation front radar now has so-called radome heating, which prevents the sensor from being clogged by snow.

State-of-the-art safety

The Mercedes-Benz PRE-SAFE® concept has been protecting vehicle occupants in many accident situations for years. Among its capabilities, it prepares the car as best as possible in advance of an imminent crash. Using findings from its in-house accident research, Mercedes-Benz has been con-tinuously developing it to create a 360° monitoring system. Plus, the new E-Class is equipped for the very first time with the new sub-system PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side. Together with the familiar PRE-SAFE® protection concepts for front and rear impacts, it creates a kind of virtual crumple zone extending all the way round the vehicle – PRE-SAFE® 360°.

Because only a limited crumple zone is available in the event of a side impact, PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side moves the affected driver or passenger as far as possible from the acute danger zone as soon as the system identifies an imminent side collision. Air chambers in the side cushions of the front-seat backrests are also inflated within fractions of a second.

PRE-SAFE® Sound – Close your ears when it gets loud

During an accident, noises can occur that can have a negative effect on some people. With the new PRE-SAFE® Sound system, Mercedes-Benz is using a natural reflex for the first time to condition hearing against accident noise. The stapedius muscle in our ears contracts when we hear

a loud noise. The contraction of this tiny muscle briefly alters the connection between the ear drum and the inner ear, thus better protecting it against high-pressure sound waves. Mercedes-Benz is making use of this reflex for biomechanical hearing protection. When a collision risk is identified, PRE-SAFE® Sound emits a brief noise signal via the vehicle’s sound system. This triggers the Stapedius reflex, conditioning the occupants’ hearing and thus reducing the strain on the ears.

Even more intervention scenarios

For a long time now, the PRE-SAFE® system has reacted as soon as it recognises the threat of a collision or another danger – such as a shock reaction by the driver like an emergency breaking manoeuvre or critical movement of the steering wheel. It also reacts to other unusual vehicle behaviour, like heavy over or understeering or widespread activation of assistance systems. In order to improve safety even further, the system now reacts to even more intervention scenarios. These include the driver moving quickly from the accelerator to the brake pedal, critical steering movements now at low speeds, too, a significant, autonomous course correction by Crosswind Assist and when it recognises an imminent side impact.

“One of my favourite cars is the E-Class Estate.”

Mr Källenius, why is Mercedes-Benz the right fleet partner?

Our philosophy “The best or nothing” brings many benefits to fleet customers, too. We offer a broad product spectrum to suit every need, we use highly efficient, economical drive systems and we support our customers with tailor-made service packages – to name just three powerful arguments.

What does that mean specifically – in terms of the product spectrum, for instance?

We offer an extremely broad and versatile spectrum. Take our C-Class as an example. The model range encompasses seven variants, from the saloon, through the estate and the extremely successful GLC SUV to the new cabriolet. And all models combine the classic Mercedes-Benz values like quality, safety, comfort and everyday usability with driving fun and an attractive design. Another very current example is the new E-Class, referred to by more than just us as the “world’s most intelligent business saloon”. One of my personal favourite cars is the E-Class Estate, because its sporting qualities, spaciousness and flexibility make it the perfect family car. As a father, I really appreciate that.

Efficiency is especially important to fleet customers. To what extent do Mercedes-Benz drive systems improve the economy of a vehicle fleet?

We are optimising our internal combustion engines in a highly targeted manner. The new OM 654 diesel is just one example of that. We succeeded in increasing power output compared with its predecessor, while considerably lowering fuel consumption as well as exhaust and noise emissions. This shows us that diesel technology is absolutely fit for the future. This is also confirmed by independent experts like DEKRA, which has tested the engine under RDE conditions in real-life driving situations. We take our pioneering role in the field of alternative drives extremely seriously, too. With eight models, Mercedes-Benz already has the widest range of plug-in-

hybrids and by 2017 the company will have a total of ten plug-in-hybrids on the market. The plug-in-hybrid drives are an important part of our electrification strategy – and we have plenty more in the pipeline.

And what service support do you provide for your fleet customers – now and in the future?

We are continuously expanding our range of “Mercedes me” services, for one thing. We are taking full advantage of all the opportunities offered by digitalisation of the sector to benefit our fleet customers. This year, we will start offering a new service for fleet operators, called “connect me business”, which brings many benefits in terms of cost optimisation, safety and comfort. We want to deliver our customers perfect service online and offline. This is yet another example of the groundwork we are laying for the future.

International experience with swabian rootsA new face at the top of International Corporate Sales – Stefan Herbert has been running the business since 1 July. He follows Hans-Georg Lutz, who stepped down due to early retirement after seven very successful years.

Stefan Herbert is well versed with the Daimler Group as well as the national and international markets. The 40 year-old has held a wide variety of positions over a total of 15 years with the company. In the late nineties he garnered his first international experience with Mercedes-Benz UK in Milton Keynes. Later, he spent several years with the Mercedes-Benz sales subsidiary in Stuttgart, focused on business customers. Latterly, he led the worldwide smart sales functions in Stuttgart-Möhringen.

The native of Schwabia deepened his international experience in the Far East, where he held various positions from 2008 until 2012. In 2009 he took over as Head of smart Sales & Marketing, where he was part of the team responsible for the huge success the brand is enjoying on the Chinese market. In the space of just a few years, sale figures there have risen nine-fold.

Stefan Herbert also has a personal hobby that helps with the challenges of his new position: As a passionate half-marathon runner, he possesses tenacity and endurance – and knows how to achieve success step-by-step with a clear objective in sight.
