THE FESTIVAL: For the 15th consecutive year, Berlin’s FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS presents outstanding light art projects and emotional storytelling in Germany‘s famous capital city. With over three million visitors and more than one billion media contacts, the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS is one of the best-known light art events in the world. On the occasion of this year's theme "Lights of Freedom" and the 30. anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS team, in collaboration with local and international artists, turns Berlin into the largest open-air gallery in the world. The festival aims to connect different cultures and people around the world – because lights speaks all languages.

Participant of the last years competition „City of the Future“

THE PURPOSE:

We would like to warmly invite talented artists, graphic designers and creatives from all over the world to participate in our international contest, jointly organized by FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS and the Singapore Embassy in Berlin. The theme for our 2019 contest is “Kaleidoscope”. An optical instrument through which beautiful forms and shapes are formed by endless reflecting mirrors. The kaleidoscope is a suitable metaphor for the multi-faceted cultures and rich diversity of Singapore and Berlin. This is a timely and apt theme as the Embassy will be launching “KaleidoSGope” from June to October 2019 which will comprise a series of cultural and musical exchanges between Singapore and Germany, ranging from classical concerts, samba performances to street food markets, culminating in the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS from 11th to 20th October. Building on the theme of “Kaleidoscope”, we hope that participating artists worldwide can express their visions of the beauty and energy through cultural exchanges. We would be delighted to transform the spirit of artistic works on this theme onto the facade of the modern Embassy building.

COMPETITION OUTLINE:

We would like to honor outstanding, original and innovative artworks that reflect the theme “Kaleidoscope”. 10 shortlisted finalists, chosen by an official jury, will have their artworks projected onto the facade of the Singapore Embassy, located at Potsdamer Platz, during the period of the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS. Visitors will have the opportunity to vote online on the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS website for their favorite artwork. The top 3 winners of the contest will be determined after the voting and rewarded with a beautiful trophy, as well as with the following prize money: 1st – 500€ | 2nd – 300€ | 3rd – 200€

INFORMATION & DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:

Specific technical information can be found in our separate instruction document. You will receive this file and template for the artwork by clicking on the following link – (Guideline Artwork).

SUBMISSION:

Your artwork should be embedded or drawn up in an open .psd file, which you will receive by clicking on the following link – (template). Attention please: the projection is not digital. It will be a slide projection. 10 finalists, each motif will be shown for approx. 1 minute, presented in a loop from 7:00 pm - 12:00 midnight during 10 Festival nights.

TIMELINE:

DEADLINE OF SUBMISSION: 30th of August 2019

Please upload your open .psd file through wetransfer / dropbox, etc., and send us ONE email containing the download link together with your name, age and

address, including city/country of residence. Please also add a short description of your work (2-3 sentences about your ideas and inspiration).

30th of August 2019: The jury will meet in order to select the 10 finalists! The selected motifs will be forwarded

to the Festival’s art technicians to be adjusted for the projection. 11th until 20th of October 2019:

Visitors of the FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS will enjoy the projection show of the 10 final motifs on the Embassy’s façade and are motivated to choose their favorite motifs by using the official online voting on the Festival’s website.
