Classification societies are focusing more attention on outside shellsteel condition.

    Introduction

    World Fleet

The age profile of the worlds merchant fleet continues to change.

Of particular influence still are the large, single hull, crude oil tankers.

As these vessels leave the fleet and are demolished, their

replacements, new double-hull tankers, pose different coating

challenges. Equally, regulations such as the IACS (International

Association of Classification Societies) Enhanced Survey Programme

mean that much larger areas of seawater ballast tanks in double-hull

vessels need to be inspected and maintained. These r egulations

obviously have both cost and time implications for the vessel operator .

The dry bulk carrier fleet also has a significant amount of new tonnage

currently entering service, which, within five years will be subject to

the same stringent demands of the Enhanced Survey Pr ogramme.

    Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is the single most important factor influencing

    coating system performance.

    Abrasive Blasting

Dry abrasive blasting, despite restrictions in certain drydock

locations, is still the most common method of steel surface

preparation worldwide. The most widely used surface preparation

reference standards for maintenance and repair include:

    International Standards Organisation ISO 8501-1:1998

    Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC)

To accommodate maintenance scenarios not covered in these

ISO/SSPC references, International Paint have produced additional

    surface preparation standards.

With a growing awareness of the need for effective corrosion control,

a key element of a carefully planned vessel maintenance programme

is the correct choice of surface coatings.

    International Paint Surface Preparation Standards

    Abrasive Sweep Blasting

Dry abrasive sweep blasting is the technique used to r emove a coat,

or coats of paint from an intact surface, or to partially remove

corrosion from a corroded surface. This selective r emoval technique

is achieved by sweeping the surface with a jet of dry abrasive.

The effectiveness of the operation depends on the type and condition

of the coating, the surface to which it is applied, type and particle

size of the abrasive and above all, the skill of the operator . Our visual

standards have been produced to provide guidelines for the types

of surfaces commonly encountered on vessels during maintenance

    and repair.

    Hydroblasting

Increasingly, hydroblasting is the main alter native to dry abrasive

blasting in the marine industry due to the advantages of:

    l

Reduction* in waste disposal costsl Reductions* in dust and noise pollution

l Reduction* in soluble salt levels on prepared steel surfaces

    * In comparison to dry abrasive blasting

Hydroblasting is a preparation technique which relies

entirely on the energy of water striking the surface to achieve its

cleaning effect. Abrasives are NOT used in hydroblasting systems.

Two different hydroblasting operating water pressures are

    commonly encountered:

l High pressure hydroblasting, operating at pressures between

    10,000 and 25,000 p.s.i. (70-170 Mpa)

l Ultra high pressure hydroblasting, operating at pressures above

    25,000 p.s.i. (170 Mpa) and typically between 30,000 and

    36,000 p.s.i. (207-250 Mpa)

Our visual standards have been prepared using ultra high pressure

hydroblasting equipment. However, these standards are also

applicable to surfaces prepared by a wide range of hydroblasting

pressures, providing the equipment used is capable of cleaning to the

    visual standard depicted.

    Slurryblasting

Slurryblasting is a technique for cleaning steel surfaces using a

mixture of fresh water and abrasive, where the elimination, or

control of abrasive dust is r equired. Two slurryblasting systems are

    commonly encountered:

l Pressurised water abrasive blasting, which uses water to propel the

    abrasive

l Air abrasive water blasting, which uses compressed air to propel

    the abrasive

Our visual standards have been prepared by using pressurised water

abrasive blasting but the photographic references are representative

    of both slurryblasting methods.

    Surface preparation is the

    single most important

    factor influencing coating

Many operators today are seeking surface tolerant anticorrosive

systems which can be applied over a range of power tooled,

hydroblasted, slurryblasted or abrasive blasted surfaces. In addition,

for ease and simplicity in the drydock, the demand for keel to rail

anticorrosive systems is an increasingly common requirement.

International Paint has a unique range of keel to rail anticorr osives

which address the needs of the ship repair yard and applicator plus

the in service performance requirements of the vessel operator.

    Key Vessel Areas

    Underwater Hull

Fuel cost is a significant part of any ship operators budget. A clean,

smooth underwater hull is essential if maximum fuel ef ficiency is to be

achieved and in this respect, antifouling or foul release system selection

    is critical.

International Paint recognises the issues facing ship operators and has

developed a Hull Roughness Penalty Calculator (HRPC) and a pr oven

range of TBT free antifoulings and foul r elease systems that can offer

in service periods of up to 60 months*.

The International Paint product range allows ship operators to select

the most appropriate scheme for their vessels taking legislation and in

    service performance requirements into account.

    Keel to Rail

Mechanical damage and subsequent corrosion on outside shell areas

is not only unsightly but can contribute very significantly to the

    vessels maintenance and running costs.

If carefully selected, the outer shell anticorrosive can offer protection

against mechanical damage, control hull roughness below water and

help minimise future surface preparation and steel replacement costs.

Ultimately, the correct choice of anticorrosive can limit the number of

major hull coating refurbishments over a vessels lifetime, thereby

impacting on both maintenance costs and the overall value of the

    ship in the long term.

The choice of anticorrosive depends largely on performance

expectations, vessel age and steel condition. Another important

aspect is the investment an operator is prepared to make in terms of

    surface preparation and application costs.

TBT free antifoulings up to 60 months in ser vice*.

Foul release systems offer proven long term (60 month) performance*.

A poorly chosen scheme can resultin costly surface preparation andextensive touch-up repairs.

Good in-dock arrival condition of avessel coated with a highperformance coating system.

    Topsides and External Superstructure

The topsides and external superstructure of most vessels are highly

visible areas which contribute to a first impression of the overall

    condition of the ship.

Todays extremely competitive marketplace puts further pressure on

ship operators to maintain a high standard of vessel appearance.

In addition, the limited availability of crew time and labour, difficulty of

access, control of on board maintenance costs and restrictions in

many ports worldwide on over the rail painting are all strong reasons

for applying a high performance cosmetic finish at maintenance and

    repair drydocking.

Our cosmetic finishes have been specifically designed to meet the in

service requirements of vessel operators and fully complement the

range of recommended anticorrosives and abrasion resistant

    products.

Until recently, coatings design has been r estricted by an absence of

reliable standard test equipment and protocols which can accurately

reproduce practical conditions in a loaded cargo hold. To address

this problem, International Paint has developed test methodologies

for cargo hold coatings which accurately simulate the damage

produced by various cargoes in the holds of operational bulk carriers.

The results of these unique, practical tests have enabled International

Paint to design a range of cargo hold coatings to successfully meet

the requirements of bulk carrier operators.

    International Paint Test Methods

    Cargo Chute

This test is principally designed to quantify abrasion damage by

impact. A more meaningful test than either Gardner Impact or Taber

Abrasion, the cargo chute is a simple, yet useful practical test for

simulating conditions during cargo loading. Loading heights, cargo

types, weights, coating systems, temperatures and coating cure

schedules can all be varied. Comparisons are made by measuring

percentage weight loss in respective coating systems.

    Test X9

Developed in conjunction with Newcastle University, UK, this test,

unique to International Paint, accurately simulates in service

gouging and rubbing damage. Coating systems are characterised

versus different cargoes, sequences and pressures using advanced

methodology quite unlike that historically employed in the testing of

    cargo hold coatings.

    Cargo Holds

Bulk carrier operators are under increasing pressure from

Classification Societies, port state control authorities, charterers,

and surveyors to maintain the condition of cargo holds.

Damage to coatings sustained in holds from cargo handling and

transit can be considerable, particularly if the holds ar e coated with a

conventional or single pack paint system.

    External Decks and Hatch Covers

Wear and tear can range from impact damage encountered on a bulk

carrier or container ship, through to oil or chemical spillages on a

tanker deck, to a continual stream of vehicular and pedestrian traffic

    on a ro-ro ferry.

If not properly protected, these important, highly visible vessel areas

will corrode and require costly, repetitive and time-consuming

maintenance. The potential implications include vessel safety, crew

safety, on board maintenance costs and continual disruption.

As with other areas of the vessel, external decks and hatch covers

require coatings specifically designed to be compatible with practically

    achievable surface preparation standards.

The International Paint external decks and hatch cover product range

has been engineered to offer a range of performance levels

compatible with common surface preparation methods.

A poorly maintained deck can lead tocostly refurbishment.

A well maintained deck controls corrosionand gives good vessel appearance.

In service impact damage. Cargo chute test impact damage. In service gouging damage. Test X9 gouging damage.

    New test methods can

    now accurately reproduce

    the damage experienced

    by coatings systems

    in the cargo holds of

    working bulk carriers.

A high performance, light coloured water ballast tank coating 7 years in service.

    The choice of cargo tank

coating is critical for the ship

    operator and incorrect selection

    can severely restrict a vessels

    cargo carrying capacity and

    trading capability.

Corrosion in cargo or grey water tanks can be expensive to repair .

    Water Ballast Tanks

Water ballast tanks can be difficult areas to repair whilst the vessel is

in service, and typically require considerable time, investment and

planning for major refurbishment at drydocking.

These practical and financial issues are compounded by Classification

Society requirements for improved vessel safety and where one of the

main areas of focus is the condition of water ballast tanks.

Important factors in water ballast tank coating selection

    typically include:

    l Proven corrosion protection

    l Light colour

    l Tar free

l High volume solids content to meet VOC (Volatile Organic Content)

restrictions now in place in several worldwide locations

    l Surface tolerance

    l Damp tolerance

    l Winter workability

    l Ease of application

    l Independent certification

Whether carrying out minor water ballast tank coating r epairs or

major refurbishment work, in dock or at sea, International Paint has

the range of products to fully meet operators needs.

    Cargo and Grey Water Tanks

In the chemical and product carrier sectors, the cargo tanks of the

vessel are the critical revenue earning spaces. The incorrect choice

of specialist coatings in these spaces can result in cargo

contamination, potential rejection of the cargo by a charterer and

costly repairs with the associated off-hire time.

In addition, flexibility of cargo carriage capabilities as well as easy

clean, smooth tank coating surfaces are factors that can

contribute to successful and prof itable vessel operation.

The choice of cargo tank coating is critical for the ship operator and

incorrect selection can severely restrict a vessels cargo carrying

    capacity and trading capability.

On cruise ships and ferries, the grey water storage tanks also require

specialist protection to provide the required levels of performance.

The International Paint cargo and grey water tank product range has

been developed to meet the demands of chemical and product

tankers plus passenger vessel operators. Rigorous testing using a

wide range of cargoes and cargo cycling has been carried out to

ensure that the in service performance of our coatings meet operator

    requirements.
