International Education Week (IEW) was established by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote awareness and visibility for the growing global context of higher education in the United States. The University of Florida is proud to be a part of this event, taking place this year during the period November 15-19. With almost 5,000 international students from over 100 different countries, nearly 2000 international scholars and faculty on campus, and over 2,000 students who study abroad in over 50 countries, UF is a proud promoter of international education, scholarship and understanding.
The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) will be leading the campus celebration of International Education Week during the period November 14 to 19. This year ’s theme, “Making Global Connections,” will feature a wide array of activities for the UF community to participate in, enjoy, and learn. The goal of this year ’s celebration is to highlight the many existing opportunities available for international engagement on campus and around the world, and to create a better sense of understanding in our global community.

ON-GOING EVENTS
Welcome to the premiere edition of the UF International Center Newsletter! We will periodically issue this electronic publication to highlight current international activities on the campus. We will also use this newsletter as a vehicle for spotlighting the significant contributions of units across the campus to the internationalization agenda of the University. In this premiere edition, we feature the full spectrum of activities planned to celebrate International Education Week, November 14 to 19.
The University of Florida International Center (UFIC) is the lead interface for a broad array of activities that link the University of Florida to the world outside of the UF campus. The UFIC staff is positioned to support the full array of core missions of the university, including internationalization of the educational mission, globalization of the research/discovery mission, and stretching the outreach/service mission to the world beyond the state and nation. Many legal, immigration, and visa support services essential for the presence of international individuals on this campus would not happen without UFIC. In the globalized environment in which we reside, a world class institution such as the University of Florida is necessarily and proactively tied to the outside world. UFIC helps assure that this tie to the world beyond our borders happens, working hand in hand with faculty, students, and staff across the campus. In a very real sense this is YOUR newsletter!
