Editorial

Dear Staff and Students,Having been in the office for two years now, I can say that International Office is one of the largest units in the university working on its best endeavors for the re-tention and recruitment of the international students. Ever since November 2009, the office did not stop for even a day to take breath from visits, promotions, sem-inars, activities, exchange program and many more. It was at the end pleasing to see that the work paid off and for the first time in Eastern Mediterranean Univer-sity history, the number of new registered internation-al students exceeded one thousand and the current international students had more activities than ever.

Sharing cultures of the diverse nations, tasting the sun-shine of the summer and the breeze of the winter of North Cyprus are the luxury of our students and we as International Office provide all the logistics and sup-port for them to live these in the best way possible.

This issue will be devoted to showing the readers how the international face of Eastern Mediterranean Uni-versity has developed both within the university and outside of the university. I hope you enjoy this issue of the International Center Magazine just as much as you enjoyed the previous.

LOTS OF FUNACTIVITY

The EMU International Office organized a number of activ-ities for EMU students in the

2010-2011 academic year, playing an critical role in organizing and providing logistical support for a raft of events. All in all, the recent activities provided great enter-tainment and pleasure for the stu-dents involved and for the invited guests. The International Office strives to ensure that all interna-tional students successfully com-plete their studies. Making sure that the students to feel at home is an important part of this, as well as encouraging all to share and ex-perience other cultures through activities celebrating the range of diverse national traditions. Here are some highlights of the activi-ties this year:

A cocktail was organized for the new stu-dents and their families at the EMU Beach Club during their first week’s orientation to EMU. The orientation includes the fa-miliarization of the campus, its facilities and the city of Famagusta, enabling fami-lies and students to feel confident that EMU is a safe and well managed place to purse undergraduate and graduate stud-ies.. It also serves to assure prospective students that EMU provides continuous supportive environment for its students.

Azerbaijan Night was celebrated at the Beach Club on 22nd of October 2010. EMU officials and students attended the night, as well as Azerbaijani teach-ers and students. The night highlighted the independence of Azerbaijan and its culture with dance shows and cuisine. Cemale Aliyeva, a famous Azerbaijani singer performed on the night.

Azerbaijan Independence Day

The 2010 Nigerian Independence Night was a very colourful and fun packed night. Nigerians as usual were out in mass to celebrate this wonder-ful occasion, which marked their coun-try’s 50th anniversary of its independ-ence from colonial rule. The occasion started at 8.30 pm at the Beach Club, attended by the Rector, Vice Rectors and many guests from different na-tionalities. The audience was treated to a wide range of performances in-cluding dances, singing, drama and a fashion parade representing all the tribes of Nigeria. This is indeed a sign of Eastern Mediterranean University’s hospitality for its students.

Nigerian Independence Day

Palestinian Night was organized by Palestinian students and held at the Beach Club. Students had the opportunity to enjoy the experience of Palestinian culture through the songs, dances, cuisine, slide shows and poems shared on the night. The Rector, Vice Rectors and officials of the university attended the night together with EMU students from various countries of the Arab World.

EMU had one of its most colorful and cosmopolitan nights on Thursday, 28 October, where stands with traditional food, national costumes, flags, photo-graphs and slideshows were prepared by international students in order to introduce their cultures to others. Eastern Mediterranean University students turned this night into an in-ternational parade with their creativi-ty. Concerts, dance performances and fashion shows with traditional clothes were among a number of activities which attracted guests’ admiration. As well as the stands visited by EMU officials, staff and students, the wide variety of traditional food and colorful performances turned the night into a genuine international festival.INT

The memorable trip to St.Hilarion and the exciting sojourn to the sandy beaches of the Karpaz peninsula were a great success, part of the fun-filled events organized by the International Center for Bayram. It was a multicultural event, with students from a wide variety o nationalities ranging from all the continents: Africa, Asia, Europe, America and the Middle East. A total of 10 coaches lined-up at Sabanci Dormitories waiting to convey both old and new students to the historical touristic regions of this Mediter-ranean island. Students were filled with

wonder at the sight of St. Hilarion Castle top which was an exciting and for some a daunt-ing climb. Students were also provided with the opportunity to shop at the shopping malls. The sight of the wild donkeys and long sandy beach in the Karpaz region were other amazing sights that the students marvelled at. Students also enjoyed photographing the Golden Beach, famous for its golden sand, the green hills and the old Orthodox Church in the Karpaz region

The start of this occasion was marked by the decorating of the Christmas tree at the entrance of the university. On Christmas Day four Santas distributed chocolates to all the units and students throughout the university. This had been preceded by the celebration organised at the very prestigious, newly equipped and elegantly furnished EMU Beach Club on the 24th of December 2010. The serene and starry winter atmosphere outside made it an evening that will remain in the memories of those who attended. After the event started at 8:15 pm, the selection of activities was more than enough to get everyone warmed up and excited. Music filled the air with a variety of musical performances and a collection of carols sung in tradi-tional Christmas harmonies. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Christmas turkey by the chefs. The Christmas Eve celebration at EMU has gradually evolved to become a tradition that adds color to the tapestry of student life in the middle of winter. We are looking forward to the 2011 Christmas Eve party which will take place in the new ultra modern cultural centre.

Families not only visit EMU in the orientation week to see their children settle in, they also come to attend the graduation ceremony, where they proudly see their children receive their diplomas and throw their mortar-boards up into the air. Many come thousands of miles to be with their children on this very special day. EMU con-siders it an honour to greet and host its students’ parents on this memorable day. The graduation dinner is organ-ized at the Beach Club for the visiting parents, as well as the graduating students. Graduates get a chance to thank their parents and say goodbye to EMU, whilst parents get a chance to see their child no longer as a student, but a graduate of EMU and a fully-fledged member of society.

Graduation Dinner for Fall Graduates and Families

Nigerians represent their great nation in EMU by gathering together for the Nige-rian Award Night. This is an annual event for Nigerian students, at which they elect amongst themselves the candidates for spe-cial awards such as Mr. EMU, Miss EMU, The Most Intelligent Student, and many more. The event this year was, as every other year, held at the Beach Club with all Nigerian stu-dents attending and parading as celebrities do for the Oscars. The night was standing room only and everything went smoothly due to the excellent organization by the Ni-gerian student society.

This year many enjoyed the concert by an Iranian group at the Activity Center, as well as Iranian Nooroz Celebration Night and Azerbaijan Celebration Night at Beach Club. Famous singers, well-known actors and me-dia personalities from Iran and Azerbaijan joined in the celebration with our students.

The prestige with which EMU is associat-ed is clearly demonstrated by the grow-

ing demand and numbers of students who choose to study in the various departments of EMU. EMU has become an institution that international students are attracted to, evident from the growing number of in-ternational students who have joined the EMU family this academic year. As well as their academic work, they are also involved in extra-curricular activities and become knowledgeable about other traditions and cultures. We are proud to have such a cos-mopolitan student body at EMU fostering a diversity of culture, tradition and nation-alities unique in North Cyprus. We asked some new comers why they chose EMU:

When I first came to EMU, being so far away from my family and friends I did not know what to do. From the airport to my dormitory and until the comple-tion of my registration, the Interna-tional Office gave me a mentor to assist me. Not even for one minute did I feel that I was alone. I was then introduced to many students from my own country and from other countries. I can be there for the International Office when they are in need of a mentor, just as they were there for me throughout my ori-entation and adaptation period

I attended Casablanca American School and had a long selection of institutions I could have cho-sen from. When I decided to apply to EMU and I wrote to the International Office for further de-tails, they responded immediately and guided me through the acceptance process until I stepped foot into my dormitory and registered. It was a great way of welcoming me to the university and to the island. I see a lot of different nationalities at the university and they are all being welcomed by EMU in the same manner which is a strong point for an institution.

I scored over 600 in my university entrance ex-amination in Azerbaijan which made me one of the outstanding students of the exam. I had the chance to attend many schools but chose to come to EMU

as I think it is one of the best institutions that can re-spond to the academic background I imagined from

an institution. I will recommend EMU to anyone who wants a good start for their career.

I came to EMU from Budapest and as soon as I set foot on the campus, I realized the metropolitan layout of the campus with so many different restau-rants and cafes joining the cosmopolitan nature of the population of EMU. EMU provides opportunities to all their students to continue experiencing their own traditions and beliefs with the many activities and facilities. In an island as small as North Cyprus, I couldn’t have imagined such a great university. I am proud to be a student of this university now.

EMU was promoted in my city as an institu-tion which has been accredited by the Higher Education Ministry of Nigeria and many other institutions. I wanted to receive a diploma that was recognized and accredited in any country I would apply to work in after my graduation. EMU was strong in ranking and facilities offered to its students. I appreciate being a student of EMU

Last summer I attended the biggest congress in the world with 1000 students from 110 coun-tries and the biggest multicultural companies all together. A feast of culture for 10 days and world-wide known companies you can never see together whole your lives. Alcatel-Lucent is pre-sent, Deutsche Post DHL, Tata Consultancy Ser-vices, Price Waterhouse Coopers, UBS, Unilever, Wall Street Journal, World Bank are there and many other leader brands. This place is “AIESEC

International Congress 2010” (IC 2010). Offi-cially the biggest congress of the world and the largest student organization… In the end of the congress I had hundred of contacts and friends. Furthermore getting to know other cultures

was worth everything. I will never forget these memories which reminded me how small the world we are living in. I know that if I wasn’t and AIESECer, I –most probably- could never go to India whole my life. I am happy to meet such an ancient and rich culture. But most importantly to represent Turkish Republic of Northern Cy-prus on the other side of the world was beyond everything.

Atif Khalid, Pakistan: Hi! I am Atif Khalid Qureshi from Pakistan. Currently I am employed in Saudi Ara-bia with well-known brand CATERPIL-LAR. I heard about Eastern Mediterra-nean University for the first time in the year 1996 when I was searching for universities famous for Computer Sci-ences. Then, I came to know that vari-ous interesting research and projects are offered to undergraduate students in this university. Therefore, I decided to start my professional education at EMU. During my studies, I experienced an extraordinary environment which helped me improve professionally and personally. Brilliant teamwork and constructive communication between teachers, students & classmates were part of a daily routine. EMU moti-vated me towards the fulfillment of my dreams and helped me to become a successful human being. I believe EMU is a place where students go to learn due to the love of learning, and take classes because they are interest-ed in the subject, not merely because they are required to do so. The main focus of EMU is to provide quality edu-cation to their students and that’s the key factor which distinguishes EMU from other universities. It is also a kind of university which promotes in-dividual learning, rather than limiting students to established, specialized curricula. Employment and education play important roles in society. Some people think that youth should get a tertiary qualification, while others believe that they should be motivated to start working in order to improve their skills. According to my experi-ence Eastern Mediterranean Univer-sity is the ideal place where youth can achieve both together.

It is important to know that once you graduate from a specific university and department, you will be able to find a good job and take the first step into your career with pride of your knowledge and achievements. EMU has over 30,000 graduates all over the world. They are the university’s most valuable ambassadors, and the most significant and powerful media to pro-mote EMU to the eyes of the world. Some of our alumni have written back to us and informed us about their current career path.

Parviz Bagirov, Azer-baijan: I graduated from Eastern Mediterranean University in 2004 with a BA in International Relations. I am also doing consul-tancy work on educational issues for world wide known organiza-tions such as World Bank, USAID and others. Currently, I am doing a distance learning MA program at the University of Manchester (UK) that focuses on Digital Tech-nologies, Communications and Education

International collaboration is just as im-portant as the publications and research of an institution as it offers opportuni-ties for quality exchange programmes on an academic and student-oriented basis. During the year, a number of active collab-orations were signed with numerous pres-tigious institutions, ensuring that EMU will be even better known in the coming years.

Recent Collaboration

Staff of the International Office responsible for specific regions around the globe conducted thorough research to identify key countries in a marketing plan, and EMU staff headed off to various countries in the world to promote EMU. Apart from being proud that some of our guides in the countries we visited were our own students, we are also honored that our promotion in each and every country has been productive and holds promise for the an increase in prospective students for the next academic year. Here are the countries and the promotion that took place:

GLO BAL

Chisome Onyewuchi Emmanuel graduated from Information Systems in the summer of 2010, and was eager to be an active EMU Alumnus. The Interna-tional Office offered him the opportunity to be the representative at the new Alumni Office in Abuja. He is proud to organize visits and seminars for EMU officials, and assist new applicants with their admissions, not just in Nigeria, but across North Africa. He has also been promoting EMU in newspapers and is filling a void of representation of EMU in Nigeria. We hope Chisome’s example will inspire other alumni to promote EMU in their countries.

Alumni Office in Nigeria

Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon, Oman and Dubai, Jordan and Lib-ya hosted EMU at their schools and exhibitions, also making men-tion of them in media reports and television programs throughout this academic year.

Arab Speaking Countries Saw EMU Amblem Everywhere

EMU has embarked on a new venture to explore several re-gions of China, with the prospect of attracting students to live and study in North Cyprus. John Eldridge toured four regions of Southeastern China with our Chinese representatives for seminars and promotion.

Visit to Four Cities of China

White marble, cloudy weather and cold weather are in stark contrast to the warm hospitality and smiling faces of the Turk-men. EMU staff explored Turkmenistan in the fall of 2010. With the feedback we received from EMU officials who were there, it is evident that our second visit is drawing closer.

Turkmenistan

With a reputation of sophistication and refined cultures, and after seeing their students at EMU, it is an inescapable fact that students from Kenya and Cameroon are very polite, intelligent and goal ori-ented. This encouraged us to visit these countries to find more of these quality students.

Kenya & Cameroon

Iran is known for its rich and diverse nature and environment. EMU staff are always made to feel welcome to this magnificent and prosperous country. Our collaborative partners, representa-tives and alumni, as well as our students have done their best to make EMU guests feel at home. With this in mind, our visits to Iran which started at the beginning of the academic year are set to continue.

Iran Seminars

We have had many trips to Azerbaijan and we have many more to come. Azerbaijan is a country that offers stunning natural beauty, and blends its rich history and tradition with a vibrant and modern society. It has a spiritual attractiveness that cap-tivates visitors’ souls. The beauty of the country is reflected in Azerbaijani hospitality. Our officials are greeted and welcomed throughout their stay in Azerbaijan. Educational exhibitions, seminars and visits have taken place repeatedly in the last three months and we have more programmes for Azerbaijan to come.

Series of Trips to Azerbaijan

Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan were the oth-er Turkic countries that EMU organized trips to, visiting many schools, colleges, universities and attending exhibitions to pro-mote EMU. These countries were very keen on sending their chil-dren to a university with such a well equipped campus as EMU.

School Seminars and Exhibitions at Turkic Republic Countries

Some of our visits to countries have been for the first time, others have been to strengthen established ties, and many more it is our lovely stu-dents who actively promote EMU. We are furthering our collaboration with institutions in Ukraine and attended an exhibition there to continue to service the increasing number of prospective students. In order to at-tract more Pakistani students, who are making up a bigger proportion of the successful alumni, we will visit the main cities Lahore and Islamabad for the next year’s recruitment. Our Kosovo students spent their February break visiting schools and giving seminars. After all, spreading EMU’s rep-utation by word of mouth is one of the most effective forms of promotion.

The summer of 2010 was so cosmopolitan that it added color and attraction not just to the campus, but to the whole city. The summer of 2011 is just as colorful and interna-tional as last year. We are hosting groups of different ages and levels at our language summer school for students from all over the world. The AIESEC group has come again for the “How to Promote EMU in my Country?” project from 13 different countries. The Ukrainian Academy of Banking exchange students are having their summer school in Banking and Finance once again this year. Loyola Law School from Los Angeles is attending a two week seminar in the International Relations Department.
