Time just flies and I would like all of you to join me and show our gratitude to Kiran and Shiv Nadar , along with the entire support staff of HCL group , for making this annual event truly successful and enjoyable for our bridge fraternity. May this continue for years to come. Shiv Nadar Foundation, besides supporting this Mind sport, is actively involved and taking initiatives in areas which are fundamental in a developing country like ours. What is being done in the field of education is truly commendable and as caring citizens of this country we should applaud such efforts. There is no better gift than the education that any socially responsible entity can give to its children. Coming back to bridge, the Bridge Federation of India has finally decided to give the winner of the team event here (Naresh Tandan Trophy), a right to participate in Indian Team selection trials from the year 2012 onwards. We feel that this decision was long overdue and we thank the federation under the leadership of Mr. Kirubakara Murthy. For some pressing engagements at home, Mr. Murthy will not be attending this event but he has personally conveyed his best wishes for the success of this tournament. Thank you, Mr. President. At personal level – like in previous years – I again humbly REQUEST all of us to take little more responsibility as participants – LESS NOISE , ADHERE TO TIMINGS , BE COURTEOUS ( especially to less experienced players ), SMOKING DURING BREAKS ONLY, MAINTAIN SOME CLEANLINESS AT AND AROUND THE TABLES. Many of us have played outside India and we should follow those practices. Believe me, the tournaments in India will become less strenuous and more enjoyable. HCL International Bridge Tournament 2011 – Curtain Raiser

The 9th Edition of this tournament is being held at Hotel Radisson, NOIDA, India from 8th Sep to 11th Sep 2011. With prize money of Rs. 12.5 lacs, this is currently the highest Prize Money Bridge Tournament of India. This prestigious tournament attracts teams from all part of India and even from our neighbouring countries. Like previous years, we are again expecting 70 plus teams. This year we also have the “Star Bridge” team from Bangladesh participating in the event.

For Indian bridge teams the tournament will have an added attraction from this year onwards, as the winner of the “Naresh Tandan Trophy” will get direct entry into “Indian Team Selection Trials”, along with other eligible teams.

The first edition of this tournament in 2003 attracted 35 teams & 89 Pairs; in 2004, it increased to 46 teams and 127 pairs; in 2005 there were 70 teams & 176 Pairs, which even exceeded the expectation of the organizers. In 2006, we had 62 Teams & 144 Pairs; in 2007 we had a record 73 teams & 160 Pairs; in 2008 the tally was 72 teams & 170 pairs; in 2009 we again had 72 teams & 173 Pairs and last year all records were broken with 89 teams participating including 11 foreign teams, who visited New Delhi for Commonwealth Nations Championship. The participation of all the top Indian teams in this tournament is an ample proof that this is one of the most favorite tournaments of Bridge fraternity in India.

The tournament is the brainchild of Mrs. Kiran Nadar - one of the top Indian players. She is member and sponsor of the “FORMIDABLES” team, which has not only won many laurels at National level but has represented India umpteen times in International events. The current “FORMIDABLES” team comprises of Mrs. Kiran Nadar, B. Satyanarayana, Subhash Gupta, K.R. Venkatraman, Rajeshwar Tewari and Honey B. Prabhakar.

Mr. Shiv Nadar, husband of Mrs. Kiran Nadar is the Chairman of HCL (Hindustan Computers Ltd) – the famous IT Company of India, which is the sponsor of this prestigious event.

The event consists of the Team of Four as well as Open Pairs event.

The “Team of Four” Trophy of the tournament has been instituted in the name of Late Shri Naresh Tandan (Mrs. Kiran Nadar’s Father), whereas the “Open Pair” Trophy of the tournament is instituted in the name of Late Mrs. Neena Bonarji by Nisha, daughter of the late Mrs. Neena Bonarji. Mrs. Kiran Nadar had played with Mrs. Bonarji as partner and Team-mate over the years.

Like previous years, the live vu-graph of the event from quarter-final onwards will be shown on BBO. The deals for the quarter-finals, semi-finals & final of the Team of four event and the deals of the Pair final will be computer dealt. Like last two years we are again going to have common computer generated boards for the TOP 10 tables in the Swiss league of Team event.

Best of luck to all the participants for this 2011 edition of the event.

Late Shri Naresh Tandan (Mrs. Kiran Nadar’s Father) in whose memory the HCL Bridge Tournament’s “Team of Four” Trophy has been instituted.
