Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa formerly the North-West Frontier Province, or NWFP, runs for over 1,100 kilometres along the border with Afghanistan. Peshawar is the capital, and the heart of the province is the fertile Vale of Peshawar, which is watered by the Kabul and Swat rivers. This was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Gandharaand is rich in archaeological remains.

Hindko and Pashto folk music are popular in Pakhtunkhwa and has a rich tradition going back hundreds of years. The main instruments are the rubab, mangey and harmonium. Khowar folk music is popular in Chitral and northern Swat. The tunes of Khowarmusic are very different from those of Pashto and the main instrument is the Chitrali sitar.

Some of Gilgit Baltistan's more famous traditional food dishes are Chapshoro, Dawdoo, Chamus, Mamtoo, Sharbat, Molida, Garma, Berikutz ,Harisa, Diram, Mull, Suppra. Chapshoro is filled with chopped meat (lamb, beaf), onions, chile peppers, tomato and fresh coriander leaves.

The women of Kashmir had a great fondness for ornaments, made of stones, gold and silver. Walnut wood crafting is manufactured in Kashmir. Walnut wood furniture and decoration pieces are exported to other countries.

Kashmiri handicrafts, carpets, shawls, wood carvings (decoration pieces, door styles, window styles etc.) are famous worldwide. Another rare thing is the sandal made of rope (baan) with hands. They call shawl for men ‘Looi’.
