Internal v external recruitment Page 14
Internal Recruitment is when the business fills a job
vacancy with an existing employee of the business.
Internal recruitment is typically used for promotions, however horizontal position shifts can also be filled with
existing staff.
Internal vacancies can be advertised by methods such as
internal noticeboards, emails/newsletters or on the
organisation’s intranet.
External Recruitment is the process by which a business
will search for new candidates for a job vacancy from outside
of the business.
External recruitment can take place in a variety of ways, including the use of job
centres, job advertisements in newspapers/on social media,
recruitment agencies, recommendation, websites.

Applying for a job - Page 16
When a vacancy arises, the business will either request an applicant to send in their CV with a covering letter.
Alternatively, the business may ask applicants to complete their own application form.
Application form Vs CV
Turn to Appendix 4 and 5 in your computing booklet to see an example of a CV and a covering letter. Then refer to Appendix 6 to see an example of an application form that applicants may be asked to complete.
CVs or application forms? Page 16
Some businesses request that applicants complete an application form for a job vacancy, rather than send in their own
CV and covering letter.
In pairs, discuss the pros of using each application method in the recruitment
and selection process.
Advantages of application forms Page 16
The business can ask specific questions that match the job vacancy
The forms are standardised making it easier for the business to make comparisons between applicants
Application forms can be off-putting for candidates to complete; this cuts down the number of applicants who apply for the job vacancy; the people who do apply are usually more serious about the job
Advantages of CVs - Page 16
It is less time consuming for applicants to complete their application, increasing the number of people from which the business can choose from
CVs are more informal than application forms; candidates can inject their own personality into their CV
Time is not wasted by the business creating their own, specific application form
