Convenient.LiveRoof green roof modules canbe preplanted with a vast array ofplants to meet the needs of yourclimate and design considerations.

Proven. For your convenience, LiveRoofoffers integrated assortments usingcompatible colors and textures.Tese carefree brand mixes weredeveloped and have proven effectivein the midwest.

Flexible. We value your individual creativityand encourage you to develop yourown custom mix of LiveRoof plantsto complement the color scheme andarchitecture of your building.

Note: Plant heights listed in this catalog are typical for

extensive green roofs with moderate fertility and littlesupplemental irrigation. The same plants may be 50% to100% taller in a rich soil garden setting.

Convenient. Proven. Flexible. Convenient. Proven. Flexible.

Te LiveRoof Standard and LiveRoof Lite systems are Extensive green roof systems. In other words, their soil depth is lessthan 6 inches. And, while extensive green roof systems optimize evaporative cooling and storm water management (in partbecause they can dry down between rain events), their shallow substrate depth means that the plants they can support must beextraordinary at resisting drought. Practically speaking, the plants that work best in extensive green roofs must be exceptionalwater conservers as opposed to water sourcers.Note : Plants for the LiveRoof Deep and Maxx Systems are discussed in thelast section of this catalog.

Water conservers are plants that store copious amounts of water in their eshy stems and leaves. Cacti are the poster childrenfor water conservers. Tey absorb water when available, and conserve it by closing their leaf pores during the day. Teir leavesand stems also have a waxy cuticle, and relatively little surface area. Water sourcers, on the other hand, are plants that haveextensive and deep root systems and go deep into the earth to nd water. Good examples of water sourcers are prairie plantssuch as little bluestem, purple coneower, and prairie dock.

Recommended Plants Accent & Base Plants

Te LiveRoof system is typically vegetated with a palette of deciduous, semievergreen and evergreen base mix and accentplants (see tabbed sections of catalog) that are exceptional water conservers. Tese are succulent, water-holding plants likeSedums, Alliums, Sempervivums, Euphorbias, Delospermas, and perhaps a few others. Te best LiveRoof plants both store water and have a special type of metabolism called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism, CAM for short. CAM plants are uniquein that under drought conditions their stomates (leaf pores) are open at night rather than during the day (as is the case withmost plants). CAM plants exchange gasses (oxygen and carbon dioxide) in the dark when it is cooler and less windy andtherefore conserve water. Practically speaking, CAM plants are up to ten times more efficient with water conservation thannon-CAM plants.

    Can Native Plants Be Used?

While it is popular to say that native plants are better adapted because they evolved here, this notion is not necessarily true. A plants toughness or suitability is dependent upon genetics and ecological and environmental adaptation (evolving withtime and exposure). Tere is nothing magical about latitude and longitude as there may be similar or more demandingenvironmental conditions on the other side of the globe. In reality some native plants are tough, some arent, and a few willgrow in an extensive green roof without frequent irrigation. Te list, however, is quite short as the native ecosystem parallel would be a giant rock covered in 2 1/2 to 4 inches of gravelly soil with loads of reected light from bordering rocks. Such real world parallels are few and far between.

Even though there is not a long list of native plants for use in extensive green roofs (unless you plan to frequently irrigate),there are a few to choose from. Such species as Sedum ternatum (white owered sedum, a shade lover), Opuntia humifusa(prickly pear cactus), and Allium cernuum (nodding onion) are such plants. Of course, with regular and frequent irrigation, many others can be sustained, and plants that fall into this category include purple coneower (Echinacea pallida) and littlebluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium). Tese plants are very drought resistant in conventional landscape settings because theyare great water sourcers. On a rooftop with 4 inches of soil, however, they wont survive for long unless regularly irrigated.

RoofTop Proven PlantsRoof op Proven means that we have actually tested these plants for effectivenessin rooftop conditions. A green roof presents a number of environmentalchallenges that do not exist in typical landscape settings, and we have found thatit is an incorrect assumption that good landscape plants make good green roofplants. Some do, and others dont. Tis is because rooftops are subject to heatingfrom below the roof deck, from unique wind and cold issues, and from heat, drought, and light issues that are especially harsh.

Rest assured that when you specify Roof op Proven plants, you are getting thebest possible selections for the uniquely harsh conditions imposed by the rooftopplanting environment.

BasePlants LiveRoof has developed various plant assortments with the following objectives in mind: Beautiful and colorful year round. Carefree, i.e., minimal maintenance, minimal water. Sustainable, expected to live indenitely.

Each LiveRoof plant assortment contains complementary plants, typically composed of ve to nine Base plants (see denition below),some assortments with Accent plants (see denition below).

Base plants consist of easily propagated deciduous, semievergreen, or evergreen Sedums that range from 1/4 inch to 4 inches tall. Tey areused to create a beautiful attractive living mulch that serves as a backdrop to any accent plants used in the assortment.

Because base plants are easy to propagate, they may be combined in random mixtures to create a meadowlike effect without increasing thebase cost of the LiveRoof system. If the base plants are planted in specic patterns (typically from plugs), the cost of planting goes up and isreected in the system price.

Deciduous and Semi-evergreen Base Plants Denition: Deciduous plants shed their leaves, and often their stems, during the winter months. Semi-evergreen plants

shed most of their leaves in winter, but typically hold on to the leaves at the tips or base of their stems. Value: Shed leaves and stems decompose to nourish the soil and provide ongoing nutrition. Available in a broad array of colors and textures. Use: ypically two to ve deciduous or semi-evergreen plants are incorporated into each LiveRoof mix as part of

the base plant palette (along with two to ve evergreens, and any desired accent plants).

Evergreen Base Plants Denition: Evergreen plants hold on to their leaves year-round. Value: Blanket the soil 12 months out of the year. Provide winter color and interest. Act as a living mulch to help prevent weed encroachment during all seasons. Sequester Carbon as they hold on to their leaves and stems indenitely. Available in a broad array of colors and textures.

Use: ypically two to ve evergreen plants are incorporated into each LiveRoof mix as part of the base plantpalette (along with two to ve deciduous plants, and any desired accent plants).

Accent PlantsIn addition to the LiveRoof Base Plants, LiveRoof offers an exciting array of Accent Plants. Illustrated later in this catalog (see tabbedsection), LiveRoof accent plants are frequently added to the mix of base plants to create interesting color splashes, vertical dimension, anda unique visual signature.LiveRoof recommends that LiveRoof Accent Plants be planted at densities of 1/2 to 2 plants per square foot. Accent plants typically addabout $ .60 to $ 1.20 per square foot to the overall system cost. Accent plants from LiveRoof are intended to do the following: Create highlights and a unique Visual Signature or design impression. Draw the eye to particular elements of the LiveRoof. Create special effects, logos, or enhance the seasonal aspects of viewership (e.g., owers during the school year).

    AccentPlants

Denition: Accent plants are typically more difficult to propagate and to plant than base plants andtherefore will raise the overall system cost a little bit. Teir beauty easily justies their cost, and the use of accent plants is a wis e investment. Accent plants are used to create colorsplashes, a unique visual signature or vertical dimension.

Value: Create visual highlights. Create a unique signature or impression. Draw the eye to particular elements of the LiveRoof . Create special effects, logos, and/or targeted effect. For example, the plant palette for schools

will typically contain accent plants that peak after Labor Day and before Memorial Day.

Use: ypically one to three varieties are used in low density (e.g., 1 or 2 plants per module), along with the palette of deciduous, semi-evergreen, and evergreen base plants.
