Combined Youth Choirs Yonder Come Day .................................. Traditional Georgia Sea Islands song; arr. Judith Cook Tucker

Some of the strongest retentions of African culture in the United States are found in the communities of the Georgia Sea Islands. These lush, former plantation lands dot the coastline of Georgia and the Carolinas, on the eastern seaboard of the United States and were a first stop for many African slave ships making their way to the North American mainland. This arrangement is based on a melodic fragment of the original “Yonder Come Day,” as sung by the Sea Island Singers.

Boy Intermediate & Training Choirs Wachet Auf (Wake, Awake for Night is Flying) ............................. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750)

“Wachet Auf,” the first of seven movements of Bach’s masterpiece cantata by the same name is a chorale fantasia, you will hear the cantus firmus sung by the unison choristers while the accompaniment plays independent motifs: one, a dotted rhythm, the other an ascending scale with syncopated accent shifts—both text painting, expression the energy, excitement and “flying.”

Seize the Day (from Newsies) ......................... Lyrics by Jack Feldman; Music by Alan Menken (b. 1949) arr. Roger Emerson (b. 1950)

Open the gates and seize the day. Don’t be afraid and don’t delay. Nothing can break us, no one can make us give our rights away. Arise and seize the day.

Now is the time to seize the day send out the call and join the fray. Wrongs will be righted if we’re united. Let us seize the day.

Friends of the friendless seize the day raise up the torch and light the way. Proud and defiant we’ll slay the giant. Let us seize the day.

Neighbor to neighbor, father to son. One for all and all for one.

“Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme.” Der Wächter sehr hoch auf der Zinne, “Wach auf, du Stadt Jerusalem!” Mitternacht heißt diese Stunde, Sie rufen uns mit hellem Munde: “Wo seid ihr klugen Jungfrauen? Wohlauf, der Bräut'gam kömmt, Steht auf, die Lampen nehmt! Halleluja! Macht euch bereit zu der Hochzeit, Ihr müßet ihm entgegengehn!”

“Wake, awake, for night is flying.” The watchmen on the heights are crying; “Awake, Jerusalem, arise!” Midnight hears the welcome voices And at the thrilling cry rejoices: “Oh, where are ye, ye virgins wise? The Bridegroom comes, awake! Your lamps with gladness take! Alleluia! With bridal care yourselves prepare to meet the Bridegroom who is near.” Zion hears the watchmen singing

And all her heart with joy is springing; She wakes, she rises from her gloom. For her Lord comes down all-glorious The strong in grace, in truth victorious; Her star is ris’n her light is come. Now come, Thou Blessed One, Lord Jesus, God’s own Son, Sing hosanna! We enter all the wedding hall To eat the Supper at Thy call.

Yonder come day, day is a’breakin’ Yonder come day, Oh my soul

Yonder come day, day is a’breakin’ Sun is a’risin’ In my soul.

Trees are green and the air is sweet The Good earth is singin’ underneath my feet

I’ll point my feet down that freedom line Walkin’ that road I’m feelin’ fine.

Concert Choir Great Gettin’ Up Mornin’! ................................................................................ Spiritual arr. Mary Goetze

This treasured African American Spiritual employs the typical call and response style found in many songs of the same tradition. Spirituals carried a religious message on the surface with a deeper meaning steeped in the context of slavery. This particular song tells of the Judgement Day and getting to heaven. Judgment Day was a code word for time of escape and Heaven was code word for a better life in the North. Since a cappella singing was one of the few allowances made to slaves, these songs of hope and freedom were greatly cherished and sung with great fervor.

In that great gettin’ up mornin’, fare thee well, fare thee well, In-a that great gettin’ up mornin’, fare thee well, fare thee well.

Stop and let me tell you ‘bout the comin’ of the Savior.

Gabriel, Gabriel, blow your trumpet, Blow it so all the people will know it.

Audience Sing-a-long Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ ........ Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) & Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960) arr. Andrew Seifert (b. 1980)

There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow, There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow.

The corn is as high as an elephant’s eye, an’ it looks like it’s climbin’ clear up to the sky.

Oh, what a beautiful mornin’, Oh, what a beautiful day.

I got a beautiful feelin’ ev’rything’s going’ my way.

All the sounds of the earth are like music, All the sounds of the earth are like music. The breeze is so busy it don’t miss a tree, and an ol’ weepin’ willer is laughin’ at me!

Girl Intermediate Choir Goodnight ........................... Russian song ascribed to Dmitri Kabalevsky (1904-1987); arr. Doreen Rao

During the ISME World Conference held at Interlochen National Music Camp in 1966, Russian composer Dmitri Kabalevsky taught this song to Doreen Rao as a symbol of their friendship. This arrangement is dedicated to his memory, for the composer’s life-long commitment to the music education of children around the world.

Soon night will come, quieting the sun, silent, the sounds of the night coming through. Hear the wind whisp’ring, whispering to you, sleep, sleep, sleep, good night my sweet one,

good night my dear one, good night my sweet one to you good night. Moonlight shines bright, shining through the night. Clouds floating, stars shim’ring, moon shining through.

Girl Training Choir Ngam Sang Duan ...................................................... Trad. Thai Folk Song; arr. Audrey Snyder (b. 1953)

This popular folk song from Northern Thailand is one that young Thai children learn and then sing all their lives. It is a favorite song to accompany one of the most common Thai dances, the Lahm Wong.

Duet

Prayer (from Hänsel and Gretel) ............................................. …………Engelbert Humperdinck (1854-1921); arr. Bryceson Treharne (1879-1948)

In this scene of the fairy tale opera, the forest darkens and Hänsel and Gretel are frightened as they see something approaching—it turns out to be a little man—the Sandman, who has come to tell the children that he loves them dearly and helps them fall asleep by putting grains of sand into their eyes. Gretel reminds Hänsel to say their evening prayer, after they pray, they fall asleep on the forest floor, encircled by fourteen angels protecting them as they slumber.

When at night I go to sleep, fourteen angels watch do keep, Two my head are guarding, two my feet are guiding, Two are on my right hand, two are on my left hand

Two who warmly cover, two who o’er me hover, Two to whom tis given to guide my steps to Heaven

Premier Choir The Seal Lullaby .............................. Text: Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936); Music: Eric Whitacre (b. 1970)

Whitacre first composed this melody for a proposed animated film based on Kilping’s beautiful story The Seal Lullaby, a dark and rich tale which begins with the mother seal singing softly to her young pup the lyrics you see below. Ultimately the film never went into production—it was passed over for Kung Fu Panda—this lovely melody lives on in this arrangement for children’s choir.

Oh! hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green.

The moon o’er the combers, looks downward to find us At rest in the hollows that rustle between.

Where billow meets billow, there soft be thy pillow; Ah, weary wee flipperling, curl at thy ease!

The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee, Asleep in the arms of the slow-swinging seas,

Beautiful Moonlight visits the sky. Beautiful ladies visit the dance circle. We dance for fun, to dissipate unhappiness and sorrow. Let’s dance for unity.

6

Combined Choirs Orde-e ....................................................... Madukayan Folk Song; arr. Maria Theresa Vizconde-Roldan

This arrangement portrays the soundscape of the Cordilleras, a mountainous region in the archipelago in the northern part of the Philippines. The piece starts with a peaceful chant, like the rice fields at sunrise. But the tranquility is soon interrupted by animal calls and festive yells of children playing. Serenity finally returns at sunset.

Bellevue Chamber Chorus Ecco mormorar l’onde ............................................................................. Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643)

One of the most important figures in the history of Western music, Monteverdi led the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque styles of music. Ecco mormorar l’onde (from his Second Book of Madrigals - 1590) is an evocative depiction of dawn, setting an eloquent text from the Italian Renaissance. The music evolves like dawn itself, almost imperceptibly moving from darkness to the bright light of day, with marvelous examples of text-painting along the way.

Here the waves are murmuring, and the treetops gently rustle as morning breezes stir among the branches. On the verdant boughs the birds sing sweetly, and the eastern sky is smiling. Now the dawn appears, and is reflected in the sea, brightens all the heavens, turns the dewdrops to pearls, and clothes the mountains with gold. Oh, lovely and gracious dawn, the breeze is your messenger, and you its envoy, restoring every withered heart. (Torquato Tasso - 1544-1595)

Afternoon on a Hill .................................................................................................... Eric Barnum (b.1979)

Eric Barnum is emerging as one of the finest young choral composers of today. Afternoon on a Hill, written in 2007, is a setting of a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), a Maine-born writer who in 1923 was the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Her writing is known for its lyrical beauty and intense sensitivity to the simple things of nature. Barnum’s imaginative setting wonderfully captures the mood and images of this afternoon excursion.

Goodnight, Moon .....................................................................................................Eric Whitacre (b.1970) Text by Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952)

Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952) wrote her beloved children’s bedtime story, Goodnight, Moon, in 1947, with the then novel idea that children would enjoy reading about their own experiences and feelings as much as fairytales and fables. Eric Whitacre - arguably the most well-known and popular contemporary American choral composer - originally developed his delicate and charming interpretation for soprano solo, harp and string orchestra. In 2012 Bellevue Chamber Chorus took part in an international consortium of choirs to commission the choral setting of the work, and subsequently premiered the piece in the Pacific Northwest.

Come, come let us enjoy singing, Ay, ila ela elalay Ay insi insinali dummaay orde-e (nonsense syllables) As one community, it is good that you came to us. Everyday, everyday we work.

Mantaco, mantaco ganganasan Ay, ila ela elalay

Ay insi insinali dummaay orde-e Payande, payande umameliyan

Agaggaw, agaggaw way mandonnoy

I will be the gladdest thing Under the sun! I will touch a hundred flowers And not pick one.

I will look at cliffs and clouds With quiet eyes, Watch the wind bow down the grass, And the grass rise.

And when lights begin to show Up from the town, I will mark which must be mine, And then start down!

INTERMISSION

Mass of the Children, by well-known British composer John Rutter, was written for a concert in Carnegie Hall in New York in February, 2003. The piece represents something new in Rutter’s work insofar as it was conceived with an integral role for a children’s choir alongside an adult mixed choir, two soloists, and orchestra. The children’s choir adds a further dimension to the traditional Latin Mass sung by the adult choir, sometimes commenting, sometimes amplifying the meaning and mood.

The Mass itself (a Missa Brevis, that is to say a Mass without a Credo section) is mainly sung by the adult choir or the soloists. The children sometimes sing the Latin text, but elsewhere they and the two soloists sing specially chosen English texts which in some way reflect upon or illuminate the Latin. The work opens with two verses from Bishop Thomas Ken’s 17th century morning hymn for the scholars of Winchester College, which leads into the Kyrie. After the Kyrie comes an exuberant Gloria featuring energetic, unequal rhythms that are typical of Rutter at his liveliest, and then a complete change of mood is introduced with the gently lilting harmonies of the Sanctus and Benedictus.

The Agnus Dei text is divided between the fourth and fifth movements, with the first part being followed by William Blake’s moving poem, “The Lamb”, sung by the children’s choir. The final movement begins with two prayers by John Rutter for the baritone and soprano soloists, based on verses by Lancelot Andrewes and St. Patrick, and it closes with the children singing Bishop Ken’s evening hymn with the timeless melody of Thomas Tallis, as the adults intone the traditional “Dona nobis pacem”, a prayer for peace. This creates a framework from waking to sleeping within which other texts and moods appear in kaleidoscopic succession, like events in a day or landmarks in a life.

In the great green room There was a telephone

And a red balloon And a picture of –

The cow jumping over the moon

And there were three little bears sitting on chairs And two little kittens And a pair of mittens And a little toy house

And a young mouse And a comb and a brush and a bowl full of mush And a quiet old lady who was whispering “hush”

Goodnight room Goodnight moon

Goodnight cow jumping over the moon Goodnight light

And the red balloon

Goodnight bears Goodnight chairs Goodnight kittens And goodnight mittens

Goodnight clocks And goodnight socks Goodnight little house And goodnight mouse

Goodnight comb And goodnight brush Goodnight nobody Goodnight mush And goodnight to the old lady whispering “hush”

Goodnight stars Goodnight air Goodnight noises everywhere

Dost thou know who made thee?

Adults and children: Little lamb, I’ll tell thee; Little lamb, I’ll tell thee: He is called by thy name, For he calls himself a Lamb: He is meek and he is mild, He became a little child: I a child and thou a lamb, We are called by his name. with an emphasis in voice. Melissa is currently 2/3 of the way through her Kodály Certification program and is hoping to complete that program in the summer of 2015. Some of her favorite choral experiences as a director have been leading the 2011 and 2012 LWSD honor choirs and organizing and directing the secondary choir for the LWSD Tenor and Bass Institute in 2009 and 2010. She is sure that her experiences working with Bellevue Girlchoir will soon be added to this list. When she is not teaching or conducting, Melissa is busy running the household and "mommy-ing". She has a wonderfully supportive husband, a 3-year old son, Jasper and a 1-year old daughter, Nora and two cats.
