All architecture is shelter; all great

architecture is the design of space that

    contains, cuddles, exalts, or stimulates

    the persons in that space.

PhilosophyDesigners have a unique opportunity and

a responsibility to create spaces that

enhance the quality of life. A successful

interior not only meets physical needs,

    but also emotional and psychological

needs. The design should make daily

living easier, more enjoyable, and inspire

the inhabitants to be their best. Efficient,

    graceful movement within the space,

versatility of function, an abundance of

    natural light, inspiring textures and

    colors, and environmentally sound

materials are the elements that help

    make the design successful.

    2. BELO CORP.SOLUTION

The concept of transparency seeks to move Belo Corp.

away from their traditional work culture into one that is

representative of a successful media businessone of

collaboration and clear communication. All private

offices have a glass front faade, and are set up against

the core of the building to let in as much light as possi-ble. The style is modern to reflect new beginnings and a

    cutting edge media business.

    CHALLENGE

    The new headquarters should

    accommodate constant visitors -

    internal employees from TV stations

around the country as well as the

general public. The priorities are a

space that reflects a successful nationalmedia business and one that celebrates

    the companys rich history.

    BACKGROUND

Belo Corp., which began as a newspa-

per company in 1842, slowly grew into

    a multi-media corporation with holdings

    in television, newspaper and websites.

Recently, they spun off their newspaper

holdings. They will be relocating theirheadquarters to a high rise building in

    downtown Austin.

    PERSPECTIVE OF INFORMAL MEETING AREA

    A burst of orange accent

    colors psychologically

    energizes and motivates

    employees while

    complementing the

    corporate color blue.

    Warm neutralsare used in

    the carpeting and panel

    fabric to balance the cool

    neutrals in the metal and

    glass panels

    Carpeting is usedthroughout

    to absorb sound reflected by

all the glass in the open space.

A dramatic dry stack wall of Texas limestone

connects the reception area to the gallery,

inviting visitors to learn about Belos history.

    3. MAVERICK PARKSOLUTION

The design incorporates 3 important elements that

research has shown to be effective in creating a positive

    social environment for the residents.

    1. Aesthetic appeal in terms of design

    2. Sense of belonging for the resident

    3. Ties to neighborhood and community

    CHALLENGE

The site for the affordable housing project,

while in close proximity to downtown and

accessible to the major highways, is adjacent to

a highway and an electricity grid. Also,

traditional affordable housing tends to address

only the physical needs of the resident i.e. basic

shelter and not the emotional and psychological

needs that make that shelter home.

    BACKGROUND

The City of San Antonio is revitalizing

its downtown area. It would like to

    encourage new urbanism and smart

growth to relieve the burdens on

public services. In order for this to be

    a successful mixed income

    development, they would like to

    integrate affordable housing options.

Every apartment is unique in terms of floor plans to create a sense of individuality.

The main priority is light. Sliding glass doors allow abundant light and air circulation. They alsoallow views of the outdoors and encourage spontaneous social inte raction.

White walls to make spaces seem bigger. Accent walls with colors unique to every apartment.

Exterior shutters eliminates the need for interior window treatments.

Concrete stained floors are easily cleaned and repairable.

Ceiling Fans in all rooms to reduce the need for air conditioning.

Closets in bedrooms run all the way to the ceiling for additional storage space.

Fluorescent fixtures including under-cabinet lighting in kitchens.

Wheatboard cabinets. Upper cabinet doors painted a complementary color to the accent wall.Base cabinet doors stained to bring out natural grain.

    Metal Flashing used as backsplash.

    4. La Bahia leisure centerSOLUTION

The design incorporates two phases to provide for the

necessities first and the luxuries later. In Phase I, the

activity rooms radiate from a common gathering/dining

area. The service areas are located on the core of the

building so that all rooms with activity areas have

windows for light. A second gathering space with the

appeal of a great room is provided in Phase II.

    CHALLENGE

The client wants a brand new facility

    that includes separate spaces to

    conduct different activities. They would

like a Spanish style to reflect the

heritage of the city. The design must

address the special needs of a mature

    population.

    BACKGROUND

The Senior Activity Center in the small

    but historically significant city of

Goliad, TX, has outgrown its premises.

The small existing facility is comprised

of one room with a kitchen and

    restrooms.

    FRONT EXTERIOR

    Concept: ENGAGED

Asymmetric forms anda variety of textured finishes create visual

and tactile appeal. Color is used to carry ones gaze from one

room into the next while marked contrast energizes the space

visually. Abundant windows and front and back patios give the

visitor the opportunity to be engaged with the outdoors. Natural

elements such as sunlight and plants enliven the space. Clerestorywindows coupled with high ceilings create a light and airy feel.
