We have been coming to INTERGEO for years, both as an exhibitor and to give presentations. We feel it is important that visitors from so many sectors have the opportunity to come together and share their know-how and experience. Indeed, GIS from Esri is not just used in traditional sectors such as surveying, cartography, GDI, agriculture and forestry, it is also boosting the cost-efficiency of business pro-cesses in all company areas in a diverse range of industries. This year, we are exhibiting ArcGIS, an end-to-end geoinfor-mation system – desktop, server, cloud, mobile – with globally available functions and content. It is a kind of “Facebook for maps” with “Like” and comment functions – a dynamic digital and user-friendly world atlas that can be used by experts, deci-sion-makers, planners and the public alike.Prof. Dr. Gerd Buziek, Director Communications & Public Affairs, Esri Deutschland Group GmbH
Today, modern life is unthinkable without reliable geospatial in-formation that provides the means to measure, visualize, analyse and interpret data for across many industries. At the same time, the convergence of technologies such as mobile mapping, UAV aerial imagery, LIDAR point clouds and 3D laser scanning enables users to capture, synthesis and deliver more information in real time. Pro-cessing and interpreting this data quickly and easily is vital, and this is an area where Leica Geosystems has been the industry leader for years. To differentiate themselves our customers adapt continuously to the changes and challenges of their environment; and we support them not only with intuitive technology but also with customisable services and support that is adapted to their needs.Dr. Jürgen Dold, President and Chief Executive Officer, Leica Geosystems AG

INTERGEOreport

New information about the energy turnaround is emerging every day. Differing views may exist regarding its feasibility, speed and costs, but everyone agrees that the energy turnaround is a highly demanding undertaking. INTERGEO report spoke with Professor Karl-Friedrich Thöne, President of DVW e.V. – the German Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management – about the challenges and requirements from the perspective of geodesists.
Geoinformation is essential to meet the challenge of the energy turnaround, but what specific challenges does it throw up for the geoinformation sector?
Thöne: Germany needs to actively grasp the opportunity to become the leading market for energy efficiency, climate pro-tection and the expansion of renewable energies – on both the national and global stages. The energy turnaround has always been an important political issue at national level but it is now also attracting a great deal of international attention. The key challenge for the geoinformation sector is to define its range of offerings in the current political and economic decision-mak-ing processes and to take the offensive in communicating this. INTERGEO provides an excellent platform for a concerted cam-paign to urge decision-makers to use geo expertise even more actively for all aspects of the energy turnaround.
Smart grids are a key part of the energy turnaround. What contri-bution can geoinformation make to such grids?
Thöne: A paradigm shift towards the incorporation and man-agement of decentralised structures is currently taking place in the planning and expansion of smart grids. The new challenges are to network data from numerous sources flexibly and in real time, to produce dynamic estimates of consumers’ electricity requirements and to optimise generation accordingly. The geo component results from the volume and complexity of spatial data for grid configuration. The core skills of geo experts include GIS analysis functions for decisions about regional situations or grid topology. This year’s GIS Best Practice Award presented by the DVW honours a prime example of geoinformation technolo-gy being applied in an innovative way. The recipient is the Tech-nical University of Berlin’s Centre for Technology and Society for its GIS simulation of the cascading failure of supply grids in the event of an emergency. Sound, reliable geodata infrastructures
network data and stakeholders in complex systems such as sup-ply grids for electricity, gas, water and district heat. This repre-sents an indispensable contribution to public services!
What impetus are you and the industry associations, above all the DVW, expecting INTERGEO to provide for the energy turnaround?
Thöne: The DVW, and probably all GIS associations, are expect-ing the dialogue between the political, business and scientific communities, users and suppliers to provide vital impetus for shaping the energy turnaround. INTERGEO therefore focuses, on the one hand, on the political and economic requirements and, on the other, on the range of solutions from the entire GIS sector for this highly complex management project. Network planning in 3D urban models and intelligent design of power lines are ex-amples of highly topical issues that the GIS associations will be presenting at the conference. And the trade fair reflects the rapid technology development in a user-oriented way. In a new culture of collaboration as a geodesy interest group, the geo associa-tions VDV, BDVI and DVW will be holding a press conference to present their joint position paper on geodesists and the energy turnaround.

The energy atlas for the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region is a pilot application designed as an indispensable source of infor-mation for the energy turnaround in Germany’s seventh largest economic area. “The purpose of the energy atlas is to provide a complete overview of the region’s energy system, including the generator structure, regional consumption, energy poten-tial and the status of the energy turnaround,” explains Hartmut Gündra, a board member of GeoNet.MRN, the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region’s geoinformation network association. The atlas was unveiled at the end of June during the 4th Region-al Conference for Energy and the Environment in Ludwigshafen and currently has 35 maps. These are explained in individual contributions. The general public, the business community, associations, administrative bodies and politicians can access the digital maps online, including on mobile devices, at http://energie.geoportal-mrn.de and use them for other websites and applications. “The energy atlas is the most complete of its kind and stake-holders from the regional business community were involved in its design,” says Gündra from Heidelberger geomer GmbH (Hall 1, Stand A1.006). In addition to geomer, the GeoNet.MRN cluster initiative, the Association for the Rhine-Neckar Metro-politan Region and Geo12 GmbH (Hall 1, Stand A1.034) also played a part. Their know-how is bearing fruit thanks to the ArcGIS Online GIS platform. The pilot application is to be gradually expanded to create an effective transparency, analytical and monitoring platform. There are plans to integrate local projects, initiatives and con-tacts associated with the energy turnaround. The MRN energy portal with its energy atlas represents the first ever interregional collaboration between geoinformation experts from the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. Its focus on the 2012 energy concept for the metropolitan region is a further unique feature.

for Technology and Society. The project impressed the judges with its GIS-based response to the challenges of coordinating infrastructure operators and authorities involved in ensuring public security in a crisis. Electricity, gas, water and district heat may be vulnerable in a crisis (extreme weather) due to the associated interdependencies, and there is a risk of cascade effects. The aim of SIMKAS 3D was to develop an application that brings stakeholders together and enables detection of these effects and rapid management of crises.Potsdam-based 3D Content Logistics GmbH came second with the project “smartMap Berlin – Berlin 3D city map on mobile devices”. LiveMap GmbH from Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin secured third place for its interactive reporting system “Broadband atlas Germany”. The winning projects will be showcased at the Trend and Media Forum on the Wednesday of INTERGEO from 4.00 p.m. (Hall 2, Stand F2.020).

INTERGEOreport

While in 1950, just under 30 percent of people lived in towns and cities, by 2008 ur-banisation had passed the 50 percent mark for the first time in human history. According to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), by 2050 some 70 percent of the world’s then population of a good nine billion peo-ple will live in urban areas. The challenges facing towns and cities in terms of demogra-phic shifts and climate change are immense. Ho-wever, forward-looking concepts related to the “smart city” have long focused not just on challenges, but also on the opportunities that towns and cities can seize by using cutting-ed-ge information and communication technologies. An intelligent, or smart city is highly networked, utilises resources on a sustainable ba-sis, safeguards mobility and stands for a high quality of life. Whether energy, traffic, citizens’ participation or special places – wi-thout geoinformation, a smart city is just a city. However, Frank M. Salzgeber, Head of the Technology Transfer Programme Office of the European Space Agency (ESA), feels there is still a lot of work to be done: “Everyone is focused on their own back yard and is missing the bigger picture. Data that is irrelevant in one area can be of good use in another. The main challenges involve making logical connections and utilising shared data, including between different countries.” So what hurdles have to be negotiated? “Learning from other areas and looking at the bigger picture – that’s half the battle.” All the same: “Without geoinformation there can be no location-based services,” says Salzgeber, “and location-based services will deliver Internet 3.0. In the future, applications will tell us how warm the local swimming lake is and how good the water quality is. The future of the ‘map’ is only just beginning.”The Spanish port of Santander offers a good example. This city has perhaps made the smartest start and set up 10,000 sensors on an area of six square kilometres. These sensors provide data on the movement of people and cars, noise, temperature and light. Police cars, buses and taxis all provide data, whether related to speed or pollution levels. An appropriate app on a GPS-capable smartphone is all any resident of Santander needs to become a source of data. The data is collated at the University of Cantabria and, for example, the consequences of an accident that makes a road impassable can be tracked live. The city’s budget can also be spared a little, because street lighting is easier to maintain and can be made less bright when fewer people are in the vicinity, for instance. The city shares local authority data with citizens via an app. All a citizen needs to do is to take out his or her smartphone to see the relevant route map for a bus stop, for example. The city’s inhabitants can also report infrastructure damage and problems via the app. The Santander au-thorities are planning to offer citizens even more features as they work to promote a true partnership.

Students at the Institute for Geoinformatics in Münster and the 52° North research network have joined forces to enable every member of the public to “drive for science”. The enviroCar initiative (www.en-virocar.org) collects data about road traffic and the associated CO
2
emissions. “enviroCar is a ‘citizen science platform’ that gives the public, scientists, traffic planners and industry the opportunity to ob-tain and exchange data about traffic and the environment,” explains Dr. Albert Remke, CEO of 52° North GmbH.Data relating to speed or CO
2 emissions is transmitted from the OBD II
adapter – which in most cases is located in the driver’s footwell – to a smartphone with the enviroCar app. Following transfer to the server,

this anonymous data is freely available. “The data is pro-vided as open data and enviroCar is an open project. Research groups are invited to use the platform to answer their questions. The enviroCar initiative creates a unique database providing information about the spatial characteristics of the emissions situation on our roads,” continues Remke, adding that particularly critical sections of road and traffic situations can be identified in this way. “The data will help to improve traffic concepts, reduce the energy consumption of passenger traffic and cut CO
2 emissions,” stresses Remke. Motorists
seeing their data on the smartphone can change the way they drive. enviroCar will be exhibited at INTERGEO at the stand of project part-ner con terra GmbH (Hall 1, Stand D1.020). It will also be discussed at a conference event addressing the geoinformation challenge at 2.30 p.m. on 9 October (New York room). 52° North is planning further projects in the area of citizen science and smart cities. “This involves measuring air quality parameters with the help of sensor networks,” says Remke.

Twice as many companies as last year are represented in the Open Source Park (Hall 1, H1.032), an integral part of INTER-GEO. Key focal points include INSPIRE-compliant geodata infra-structures, the benefits of open source technologies and model projects from the public and private sectors. The programme of presentations organised by FOSSGIS e.V. (see www.os-park.de) will be a particular draw for visitors. The expertise on open source solutions covers big data, cloud services, geoportals, ALKIS, civil participation and Germany’s 115 government information helpline. OpenStreetMap and network information/remote monitoring sys-tems are other important aspects.

Network partners Height Tech and Allsat will be presenting cut-ting-edge unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and future develop-ments at the UAS-INSYS innovation network joint stand (Hall 3, Stand F3.137) – innovative system solutions that ensure accurate positioning and navigation of civilian UAS. “As well as high-pre-cision positioning and navigation, a special focus of the devel-opment is on reliability and safety, which is to be achieved, for example, by using additional short-range sensors to measure distances,” says Peter Loef, network manager of the innovation network.
The 2nd national INSPIRE Conference on 9 October is being held at INTERGEO under the banner “INSPIRE kommunal”, putting lo-cal authorities firmly centre stage. But what does the rollout of a European geodata infrastructure, as enshrined in the EU’s IN-SPIRE Directive, have to do with local authorities – why “INSPIRE kommunal”? “Because citizens come into contact with geodata first and foremost in their local authority areas,” says Dr. Jens Riecken, Vice President of the DVW e. V. – the German Society for Geodesy, Geoinformation and Land Management. Besides IN-SPIRE, the German Federal geodata access law and laws passed by the German regional authorities are also pushing local author-rrities to achieve added value and secure greater involvement onthe part of citizens through the provision of local geodata.Riecken is hosting a new type of presentation during the day-long conference – speed dating. Ten minutes each on six examples of good practice will give delegates from local authorities plenty of inspiration. “Both data and technology are available. What’s needed now is the actual application. The time is right for localauthorities to get active,” says Riecken. He is hopeful that theconference will send out ripples, encouraging local authorities tofind out more and take inspiration from successful examples. TheDVW Vice President also hopes that the forum and its high-pro-file participants will go one step further in bringing together the interests of the federal government, regional administrations and local authorities.

“Innovative navigation applications offer impressive proof of how useful aerospace technology can be in day-to-day life. Satellite navigation is an important basis for so many different applications. We are therefore extremely pleased that we can offer startups and small and medium-sized companies a shared platform in the form of the SAT NAV-Forum and its partners and enable them to show-case their skills at INTERGEO,” says Hendrik Osenberg, a project manager at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), which is coordi-nating the activities of the SAT NAV-Forum.Exhibits at the stand will include the EU sponsored Galil-EU pro-ject, which focuses on new solutions and products based on the future of satellite navigation and synergies from geodesy and vehicle technology. Also represented at the stand is Heidelberg-er geomer GmbH and Alberding GmbH, which develops soft-ware and systems solutions in high-precision GNSS positioning. NavXperience offers 3G+C, a high-precision antenna for GNSS signals that performs extremely well in surveying, agricultural, military, machine control and nautical applications. By contrast, young startup company GeoMon supplies Landschaftsmonitor-ing+, a new, innovative, end-to-end concept for the integrated monitoring of natural areas. The system uses geoanalyses based on aerial photographs to document changes over areas and peri-ods of time, a process which can yield recommendations for ap-propriate action.

With an operating flight altitude of up to 15,500 ft AGL, the RIEGL LMS-Q1560 intro-
duces a new era in airborne mapping: This new ultra high performance laser scanner
system can be operated at a maximum pulse repetition rate of 800 kHz providing an effective measurement rate of 530,000 measurements per
second on the ground.Range ambiguities due to quite often occurring and
sometimes even dramatic terrain elevation changes are automatically resolved by RIEGL’s proprietary multiple time around processing software, RiMTA. This allows the user an un-complicated flight planning, even for difficult terrain.RIEGL’s LMS-Q1560 provides – by a unique dual channel design – an innovative forward, backward and nadir looking capability. That enables more effective and more accurate high point density data capture from different angles producing the best point spacing on the ground. The innovative RIEGL LMS-Q1560 system design and calibration pro-vides seamless integration of additional sensors, like IMU, a medium format aerial camera and an additional IR camera. With all these indi-vidual components integrated into one single instrument of compact design, suited for gyro-stabilized leveling mounts, the system instal-lation is outstandingly straightforward and time-saving.Get more information at the RIEGL booth D3.030 in hall 3.
