From The Rabbi

It is break time on the Jewish

calendar. From Simchat Torah on the

23rd of Tishri, the month that began

with Rosh HaShanah, until the 25th of

Kislev when our observance of

Chanukah starts, there are no Jewish

holidays. The month that falls

between Tishri and Kislev is the only

month of the Jewish year that

contains no festival observances.

Marheshvan, the name of the vacant

month, is derived from an Assyrian

word meaning “eighth month.” Our

tradition, however, has suggested that

the “mar” in the name of the month

be read as the Hebrew word mar,

which means bitter. After all, we have

to count off 62 long days before we

reach another opportunity for

celebration.

Personally, I am not so sure how mar

the whole thing really is. Don’t we

need a rest after the long procession

of Yom Tovim running from Rosh

HaShanah to Simchat Torah? I know

that I do. In the rhythm of the Jewish

year, the month of Marheshvan is a

time to inhale, a time to catch your

breath. Shabbat, the pause that

nourishes the soul, still happens in

Marheshvan. The growing chill

outdoors encourages us to curl up on

Shabbat afternoons with a good book

or a good conversation or for a good

nap. There is even an opportunity to

eat special foods and to appreciate all

we have, supplied by the American

tradition of Thanksgiving Day, which

usually includes another opportunity

for an afternoon nap.

What is the value of a time when

nothing seems to be happening? What

is going on while we rest? Rest allows

us to gather nourishment, and to build

our strength for whatever will follow.

We dream while we rest. I hope that

you will all take some time this month

to do absolutely nothing. Enjoy the

break, take a deep refreshing breath

and let dreams be born.

Jewish Cultural Festival Meeting

Believe it or not the planning for the 2016 Jewish Cultural Festival will begin on

Thursday, November 12 at 6:00 p.m. Plan on attending this informal meeting

where we’ll get to know each other and exchange ideas.

A Progress Note From Your

Rabbinic Search Committee:

The search process for our new permanent Senior Rabbi continues. Looking for

those attributes identified in the course of our summer workshops as most

valued by congregants, the committee has carefully reviewed several resumes

from prospective candidates. We have scheduled preliminary interviews with a

number of candidates and hope to invite the strongest applicants to Temple

Israel for in-person interviews in the weeks ahead. Have a question or

comment? You can reach the search committee at [email protected].

Rabbi Karen N. Bodney-Halasz Jerome Epstein Family Director of Education

I have always associated November

with giving thanks. Of course, this is

partly due to Thanksgiving, but it is

also from having just experienced the

fall holidays and the opening of a new

school year. I find myself looking back

with gratitude at all of the hard work

that has allowed us to reach this

moment.

There are so many who work

tirelessly to make our holidays,

festivals, and gatherings special. In

addition to the many names you will

see throughout this Tablet, there are

those who are behind the scenes and

deserve to be thanked as well--our

staff.

For all of their hard work in making

everything run smoothly, I say thank

you to Suzanne Shaw and Ellen Finke-

McCarthy. They spend months

preparing for these holidays, from

compiling the Yizkor and High Holiday

booklets, to organizing our break-the-

fast, and setting up welcome tables.

They are here before anyone else and

stay well after everyone has left. In a

year of great transition, their hard

work and dedication to our

community was evident in how

seamlessly everything flowed. Many

thanks to Annette Stogdill, as well, for

her support in these tasks.

I also offer many thanks to Courtney

Cummings, who not only provides

beautiful music during our holiday

services, but who also spends months

assembling the quartet, running

rehearsals, offering new creative ways

for us to gather as a community,

taking care to keep our photos by the

sanctuary fresh and coordinating with

hosts for Sukkahs in the City.

Bike and Brunch

Sunday, November 15 at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for a leisurely ride on the

Miami River Bike Trail, followed by a

delicious brunch at a local downtown

eatery. Bring your bike or rent one

from Riverscape

Rentals. RSVP

by November

13 to Courtney.

From The Rabbi/Religious School

For those of us who have experienced

the holidays at Temple before, we

know what to expect. But that was

not the case for our new full time

maintenance man, Kayel Ogelsby.

Kayel deserves our thanks for working

hard to learn the ropes, keeping our

building in immaculate condition,

building our sukkah, and taking care of

every last holiday detail, such as

replacing the bulb in our Eternal Light.

Many thanks also go to Molly Blumer,

our new Religious School Manager.

Molly has spent much of her summer

learning the ins and outs of our

religious school, organizing materials,

preparing teachers, and successfully

launching our 5776 school year. Thank

you as well to our dedicated Religious

School Committee for the support you

offer to Molly and me, helping to keep

the Kibbitz Café running, and

completely organizing our Sukkot

dinner.

And, of course, thank you to our

Interim Rabbi, Ilene Bogosian, for her

important role in leading services,

offering inspiring sermons, and

patiently guiding our community

through a year of great change.

As you can see, there is a great amount

of work that takes place to get us to

November. Thank you to each and

every one of you who continues to

help make Temple the welcoming

spiritual home that it is. I am looking

forward to an exciting year of new

programs and opportunities. Baruch

Tot Shabbat

Are you a looking for a child-friendly

Shabbat experience for your young

children? Tot Shabbat has returned

for you! Every few months we will

have a 20-minute child-friendly

service, followed by a craft project

and pot luck dinner. Services will

begin at 6:00 p.m., and you will be out

in time to get young ones home or to

attend the 7:30 p.m. service. The

dates for Tot Shabbat this year are

November 20, January 29 and April

15. The theme for November will be

Chanukah. Please RSVP to Molly

Blumer at [email protected].

Challah Baking

Thursday, November 19 at 6:00 p.m.

Put on your apron and get ready to

work those fingers! Join Chef Jeff

Blumer from Whole Foods as he

teaches you the tricks and techniques

of how to produce a perfect - and

healthy - loaf of challah for your

Shabbat table. RSVP by November

16. Cost is $5 to cover materials.
