Learning a new language provides unique opportunities for pupils to explore national identities and become aware of both similarities and contrasts between the cultures of different countries, including their own.

Page 4: Intercultural understanding through MFL

Key conceptsThere are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of languages. Pupils need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

Intercultural understandinga Appreciating the richness and diversity of

other cultures.b Recognising that there are different ways of

seeing the world, and developing an international outlook.

‘Cultural knowledge (that is, information about thetarget culture, its typical patterns of behaviour andits attitudes) is likely to be ‘external’, ‘static’,‘stereotypical’ and ‘reduced’; that is, it tends to beknowledge that is passed on to a learner fromsomeone else, rather than arising from the learner’sown experience; it reflects broad generalisationsoften based on a narrow selection of evidence. Andwhile such knowledge can give us pointers todifferences in behaviours and values, it can also bemisleading.’

Tomlinson and Masuahara (2004)

Page 9: Intercultural understanding through MFL

.....an approach to culture which emphasises not information about a culture but skills in exploring, observing and understanding difference and sameness, and perhaps most centrally, ‘suspension of judgement, i.e. not being instantly critical of other people’s apparently deviant behaviour’

(Tomlinson and Masuhara, 2004)

When do you like to listen to music?

Write down five occasions when you find it useful or just normal to listen to music

e.g.

Before I get up in the morning I listen to the radio because it helps me to wake up!

When I get in from work I listen to something relaxing to help me wind down

Language learning won’t change a person, but the

development of intercultural understanding allows language

learning to be the agent for change in a person.
