Between 2004 and 2006 the project partners collected more than 150 in-depth life story interviews, together with over a thousand photographs, objects and other items. This unique collection provides extraordinary insights into the experiences of refugees in London, the challenges they face, and the contributions they make to London. The interviews were collected by fifteen fieldworkers, most of them from the communities with which they worked. Each fieldworker was based with a refugee community organisation and undertook MA-level training at London Metropolitan University before each interviewing ten people. The fieldworkers and their corresponding refugee community organisation created their own local exhibitions and events, as well as participating in the development of the central exhibition. The collection is now archived at the Museum of London, where it is accessible to researchers by appointment. Lessons to be Learned: The project creates a space where the stories of refugees can be told, recorded, preserved and presented to others. It provides visibility for these communities and includes their contributions in the collections of mainstream cultural institutions.
