A Book Report By Gerry Greene

–By Philip Yancey

This practical book, found in our church library, is organized in 5 parts beginning with “Keeping Company With God”to “The Practice of Prayer.” It was written to assist the believer to develop an active and vibrant prayer life.

The author points out on page 63 that “some scholars suggest that Jesus virtually invented private prayer. No one inthe Old Testament directly addressed God as ‘Father,’ whereas Jesus did so 170 times.” Yancey encourages a runningdialogue with God, and describes how it’s done. He also points out that Jesus, Himself, talked about private prayer fivetimes.

He points out that as we seek to know God through prayer it becomes clear that the opposite of love isn’t hate as wewould initially suspect, but the opposite of love is indifference. God is love, and to be indifferent is to not care, and thatcertainly can be characterized as the opposite of God.

He also explains how prayer leads to action, which leads to change. The apostle Paul not only prayed for the churches, but his prayers lead to action, and he visited them, and lived with them.

Yancey humbly points out that “A media-saturated culture conditions us to expect a quick fix to every problem.”Relationship problems, however, rarely lend themselves to quick and easy solutions. I have not seen, for instance, thatshelves of books on ‘how to save your marriage’ have had any discernible effect on divorce rates. If relating to anotherperson proves so resistant to formulaic advice, how much more does relating to God? The secret to keeping companywith God will likely not be found in a new set of tapes, another book, a different preacher, a weekend seminar.” But, thisbook is full of very practical advice to improve our approach to our relationship with God. In a marriage relationshipthere are two imperfect parties; but, with prayer only one party meets this condition.

Beginning on page 201 he addresses the experience most Christians have when they fail to pray for an extended periodof time – a dry spell. Those are times where we wonder if God is listening, so we don’t bother to pray.

The fact is that when we pray for others, our attitudes about them change. We begin to have a genuine concern forthose we pray for, and we tend to judge them less. So, prayer is a healing process that brings us closer to the behavior ofour Lord.

Pastor’s Corner By Karl Haffner continued from page 1

I was encouraged to hear from many of you requesting a copy of that reading. After all, many of us are praying every day forthree things that we hope to be true of the Kettering SDA Church:

God, help us to model the nonjudgmental love of Jesus.

God, help us to value relationships above rules.

God, help us to grow into Your likeness.

So what do these prayers look like on Sabbath morning when we gather to worship? Perhaps the bulletin welcome that Ishared offers a snapshot. For those of you who wanted a copy but never asked, here it is again:

Won’t you please keep praying our three prayers?

Warm regards,

Pastor Karl

We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, gay, filthy rich, dirt poor, yo no hablaIngles. We extend a special welcome to those who are crying new-borns, skinny as a rail or could afford to losea few pounds. We welcome you if you can sing like Andrea Bocelli or like our pastor who can’t carry a notein a bucket. You’re welcome here if you’re “just browsing,” just woke up or just got out of jail. We don’t careif you’re more Catholic than the Pope, or haven’t been in church since little Joey’s baptism.

We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growingup too fast. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetari-ans, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’rehaving problems or you’re down in the dumps or if you don’t like “organized religion,” we’ve been there too.

If you blew all your offering money at the dog track, you’re welcome here. We offer a special welcome to thosewho think the earth is flat, work too hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or because grandma is in town and wantedto go to church.

We welcome those who are inked, pierced or both. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayerright now, had religion shoved down your throat as a kid or got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers and doubters, bleeding hearts … and you!
