How to Use This ApplicationThe Vocabulary Fundamentals interactive application is your comprehensive resource for grade-level grammar, mechanics, usage and vocabulary practice. The broad scope of language skills and range in difficulty of the interactive activities enable you to precisely target those skills that each student needs to practice.

Each lesson follows the same format, making it easy for both students and teachers to use. Teachers can use an electronic whiteboard or projection system to lead interactive class lessons, or one or more students can complete the activities on their own at a computer.

Quick Tips for Getting Started

Log in to Evan-Moor Portals and click on the icon for Vocabulary Fundamentals. This will bring up the Available Units menu, where you can select a skill section to begin. Then choose the activity you would like students to complete from the Activities menu.

Click on Quick launch next lesson to jump to the lesson that comes after the one you completed last.

Title Resources

From the menu for the available activities, select a section from the left column, then click on the green checkmark in the right column to launch the lesson.

In addition to the Teacher’s Guide, the Title Resources menu includesthe e-book and links to view how Vocabulary Fundmentals is correlated to your state’s standards.

Conducting a Lesson

Each lesson follows the same format, beginning with an instructional rule. Once continuing, the instructional rule persists along the top. In many cases, examples to show students how the rule is applied will also be displayed. To help students focus on the activity, click the purple arrow to hide the examples if they are available. Open the example to reinforce concepts or to provide a reference for students as they complete the lesson.

• Enable Check Answer in situations where you are asking students to actively engage in entering answers. Disable if you are doing a review.

Enable or disable the Check Answer feature.

The collapsible rule helps to decrease distraction so that students can focus on the individual activities.

• Many of the activities in the Vocabulary Fundamentals interactive application utilize a selection box to complete activities.

This selection box can be positioned either as a floating window, or docked on the right side of the application. This enables the options within the selection box to remain visible in those cases where scrolling is required to complete an activity.

Grab the gray bar at the top of the selection box and pull to undock.

Pull the floating box over to the right. A visual guide will appear, indicating a docking area.

The Interactive ActivitiesThe Vocabulary Fundamentals interactive application provides leveled practice for essential vocabulary skills, reinforcing your core language arts program. Skills are presented in scaffolded three-activity units, enabling you to target the varied learning needs within your classroom

• Multiple-Choice Questions (Single and Multiple Answer)Students select the correct response(s) in order to practice grade-level language development skills in a multiple-choice, test-type activity.

• Drag and DropStudents drag answers from the word box and drop them into the correct dropboxes.

There are two methods for entering in answers that require a text entry response: Students can either type their answers into a text box, or write out there answers in a drawing box.

• Written Responses Students respond to questions by writing or typing their answers within a text box.

To view an example of a correct response, or suggestions to evaluate answers, click on the blue arrow to open the flyout.

• Bingo CardsStudents practice word meaning by reading a clue and identifying the answer on a bingo card.

• Categorizing with Word Webs and Tables

First, ask students to select a clue. Then select an answer to the clue on the bingo card. The selection will appear next to the clue.

To redo an answer, select the word on the bingo card. This will reset the clue. Select the clue and select a new answer.

Once all of the clues have been answered, click on Check Answer. Correct answers will be highlight in green. Incorrect answers will be highlighted in red.

To continue, click the Show Answer button to view the correct answer.

If needed, review the skills covered in a group discussion.

The table grows dynamically as each word is placed.

• Selecting TextStudents build vocabulary skills by highlighting words using a selection box.

• DrawingStudents are asked to draw a picture in order to show their understanding of the vocabulary.

Toggle between a pencil and an eraser to make adjustements

Ask students to place the curser inside the drawing space provided. Once the cursor is inside the drawing box, it will turn into a pencil, allowing them to draw freely.

If you need to start over, click the Clear button ( ) to clear the drawing space.

Choose an option in the selection box. For additional clarity, the options are labeled.

Make a selection according to the activity directions.

Click the Check Answer button to evaluate.

Point out the vocabulary development skill for the lesson. Ask students to evaluate the objective.

Words that have been edited will be highlighted in purple. You can click on these words to modify the entry at any point during the lesson.

Once all of the corrections have been made, click on Check Answer . Correct edits are highlighted in green. Any incorrect edits are highlighted in red.

Select a word. A text entry box will appear above the crossed-out word.

Enter the replacement text. Hit the enter key on your keyboard, or use the Enter button to the right of the text box.
