IDENTIFYING IN ITIATIVEGRADE 5: SOCIAL STUDIES

OCTOBER 11 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017 & JANUARY 22 – APRIL 24, 2018

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if women didn’t have the same rights as men? Luckily, thanks to the Famous 5, we don’t have to ponder upon that. Have your students step back in time and explore who the Famous 5 were, the factors that made these five women want to affect change, and what that change meant for all others who followed.

Program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.Group size up to 30 students; $150 per program

In this program we invite students to explore the historical importance of the actions of private citizens who, through protest and legal challenges, changed the shape of Canadian law in the first third of the twentieth century. Dress in pink frocks and join us for a pink tea to discuss and debate women’s rights in the post-WWI era. Later, play a role in the mock courtroom trial to decide whether or not working conditions for Alberta’s children in the 1910s need to be changed.

ALL ABOUT NELLIEGRADE 4, 5 & 6: SOCIAL STUDIES

OCTOBER 11 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017 & JANUARY 22 – APRIL 24, 2018

Who is Nellie McClung? Most of us know her as a member of the Famous 5 and a key player in the 1929 “Persons Case,” but there is so much more to her than that. Visit the Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women, a replica of McClung’s Calgary home and discover the many facets of Nellie’s life and personality. Using the artifacts and information in the exhibit as inspiration, students will create a scrapbooking journal and make Nellie’s work as an author, teacher, activist, politician, wife and mother come alive. During a gardening walking tour the children will explore and learn the differences between certain plants and how to identify them just like Nellie. Students will leave with a newfound vision of Nellie McClung.

Program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Group size up to 30 students; $150 per program

NELLIE’S CHRISTMASGRADE 3, 4 & 5: SOCIAL STUDIES

NOVEMBER 15 – DECEMBER 8, 2017

Then learn about the contrast of the ’30s and ’40s when rationing was introduced. See how the emphasis shifted and was placed more on family and friends and far less on things. You will also learn to make a traditional 1940s soup, play old-fashioned games, and finish off your visit with an old-time dance.

Program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Group size up to 30 students; $150 per program

AERODYNAMICS AND THE AUTOMOB ILEGRADE 6: SCIENCE

OCTOBER 11 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017 & JANUARY 22 – APRIL 24, 2018

Cars and airplanes both move through the air. In this thought-provoking program, students will apply what they’ve been learning about airplanes to our spectacular collection of vintage vehicles to see whether the same principles of aerodynamics hold true. Do cars need to be as aerodynamic as airplanes? Are they really aerodynamic, or do they just look like it? Why don’t they make minivans look like Lamborghinis—what is the balance between form and function? How does a new design go from concept car to production vehicle? With a little practice, students will be able to analyze a car’s aerodynamic qualities, suggest modifications and predict future trends.

Program runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Group size up to 30 students; $150 per program
